Your not alone on the front brakes issue. I have run into the same issue where they won't return to their initial position, thus causing wheel rub.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to get the front brakes working smoother?

Have you pulled them apart and lubed them? They are extremely easy to take apart unlike
side pull brakes. Clean things up and put a bit of good quality grease on each pivot shaft.
I've done this a couple of times on Denise's bike over the course of 2500+ miles.
