Testing can indeed be frustrating. I sometimes wonder if it has any value for anyone apart from engineer types who enjoy the process of debugging. It helps that I found a place in my own neighborhood that is suitable for testing, so that I can do a test, look at the data and then adjust things if the data doesn't seem good.

maybe he needs really narrow position. from video you cannot tell how narrow arms are, but some folks with even just 2cm between arms can lose 20w instantly. also, not sure if head position is representative in vid of racing, but if so, get it lower. are legs staying in near toptube? not saying this applies t this rider, but the number of folks that ride with a knee out up to 1 foot from top tube at top of stroke is amazing. mini parachute 70-100 times per minute.

haha, I'm an engineer, so I do like getting data and all that problem solving stuff, but it's the convenience...in that it's not. I don't have a great place near me and the couple times I've gone someplace it hasn't worked out well. maybe I just need to bring my laptop out too so I can get a sense right away.

Just to add my $.02. Narrower isn't always better. I found out that I'm better off with wider pads and extensions and more of a mantis position. Tested at AeroCamp in NC.

So I gained watts and comfort which I'm super happy about

I've tried testing, it never seemed to work out well for me (in terms of getting good data). I guess I should try again. Thanks for the input.

What testing have you tried?

Chung/Aerolab isn't the only way to do this. The only time I have something resembling zero wind is at night, so I had to come up with something different.

If you are decent at coding you could put together a general "Chung with wind" calculator. That would be ideal IMO. The math isn't that tough and it can be done in a spreadsheet, but my coding skills suck and so it's tedious to use.

Syracuse 70.3, this past weekend. Data is from garmin -- started computer after shoes were safely on; turned it off just before t2. Official time is a minute or so longer. This does include the ~1 mile no pass zone which cost perhaps 45s as well as bringing the AP down ~5 Watts. Fast conditions, I think.

1) 204 / 215 AP / NP
2) 23.0
3) 55.1 miles / 2:23:30
4) 143 lbs
5) BMC TM02, Enve 6 front, Old Renn disc on the back. Wingspan helmet. One bottle (BTA).
6) Started in next to last wave, so passed a lot of people on the bike. Got held up by crowds a few times. Speed differential generally much too big to even meaningfully slingshot.

I don't think the no passing zone and 45s would bring your AP down 5 watts.....

Back of the envelope suggests that your are right; it was probably only 3-4W. 45s is also just a guess based on one mile and a speed differential of say 6mph.

42k TT, Flat windy
54:30
320w
p5-6 super9 and 808 FC with latex and 20mm Conti SS tires
excuses= windy 12-16mph with 25mph gusts; 2.5 episodes of SVT, had moto riding up the road in front of me for a few miles and its exhaust was not functioning properly GAK!, heads up course as 3 laps with lots of homes, 12 turns and 3 180s total. tried to ease off on last lap in tailwind section, only problem was that power did nto want to go back up in headwind after that. finished last 25s at 425w. guess I could have paced better. too hard at start and too much left at end. wasn't sure about PM as I have only had it back for 1 week and did not want to depend on it for pacing until I could confirm numbers seem good. they do, unfortunately :)

fastest 40k portion was 51:47

Nor Cal District TT - Sattley, CA 6/29/14

51:08 - First in the 50-54 group

1) 297 Watts
2) 29 mph
3) 40 km
4) 156 pounds
5) Shiv TT. Zipp Super 9 disk, 808 FC front. Both clincher with latex tubes. Conti GP4000s rear (23mm) and Specialized Mondo front (also 23mm)
6) Sattley is at 4900' above sea level.

It was a bit windier than last year so I didn't think a record was in the cards today. On top of that I didn't have an awesome day based on comparisons against other guys in other groups. And of course I felt it too. Not bad, but I obviously wasn't killing it today.

On the other hand three guys in particular stood out. Justin Rossi won the P/1/2 race in something like 48:15. Last year he did a 48:24 and I thought with another good day he might have a shot at the elite national record of 47:35 held by John Frey. He said that his watts were 15 higher than last year, but the wind did him in.

Also, my team mate Dan Bryant smoked Kent Bostick's 45-49 record with a 48:28 I believe. He took almost 1:30 off Bostick's old mark of 49:57.

Finally, Gary Painter from Indiana has been making the tour of the US district TT's it appears. He broke the 55 national record that was set just last year with a 50:58.

There were two national records in the 20km also.

Another note about my power. I just don't trust that particular SRM. I recalibrated it with a certified 20kg weight just last week, but it has always reported lower power than the other SRM's I've had. Today was no exception. In the past at Sattley I've averaged in the 320-330 range. Last year when I set the record I averaged 308 and this year not even 300. I'm not buying it but don't know what to do so I just go with it.

About an hour after the ITT finished we did a four man 40km TTT championship race. Myself, Dan, Carl Spakler and Jason Walker raced in the "Pro"/Open category. Two tired guys and two fresh guys. We had a good ride in slightly windier conditions and won.

1) 265 Watts
2) 30.5 mph
3) 40 km

The plan was for Chris and Jason to take longer pulls since they were fresh and it worked well. It really wasn't too bad until the last 10km or so. A couple of times after my pull it was pretty ugly getting back on. Not death defying, but it hurt more than I liked. Jason in particular was killing it. Dan too, especially when you consider his earlier race.

This is a really useful forum for viewing a cross section of data, assuming people are honest. It is good for checking you are in the ball park and motivating to striving for a more efficent position! Thank you for starting.

1) 262 watts
2) 23.1 mph
3) 56 miles (IM 70.3)
4) 188 lbs
5) Argo 18 E112, PX 88F 101R, Tubs
6) This was the best efficeny I have achieved so far in a race, conditions were good and there were no real cross winds, for once.

Considering that Mr. Walker is an absolute beast I'm not surprised :)

Challenge AC 112mi TT (relay team #1022, doughboy and friends)
4:39:xx (haven't actually seen the official results, only told)

1. 253AP/260NP, IF .707
2. 24.0mph
3. 112mi
4. 179, 6'0
5. 2012 Speed Concept Project One (10spd Ui2, 53/39 quarq riken + 11/23 cassette), reynolds 90 carbon clincher front/rear, latex tubes, Continental GP 4000S (3rd ride on them) Giro Advantage2.
6. Stopped for ~20" at special needs. Terrible headwind last 30 miles. Swimmer barely made it out before the cutoff so spent the entire ride mowing people down. Stomach decided no more nutrition at 180', rode last 90' on water and salt tabs. File here.
