The James Haycraft thread over here got me thinking. Why on earth is there NOT a Team Slowtwitch??? It seems that most of the teams exist to promote a brand and the team members get access to highly discounted product in return. Slowtwitch is a brand with Facebook being arguably the greatest competition going forward - some Facebook groups already have teams going like the Pathetics group. Dan has arguably the most connections in the business and should have considerable pull in getting to work with sponsors that Slowtwitch users would want to work with.

Because way back then, Slowtwitch was a Tribe.

But Times Change.
We have gotten or grown so far away from the Original, everything should be possible.

Still a tribe, the only difference is back then we were a Peaceful Tribe.

i think you just need to look at his partners and you see this would not work
as he said in a trisport thread he does not want to be a competitor with shops as it is the shops that mainly attend his bike fitting camps ,
i would think that one of the reasons he is president of triathlon business is that he is seen as a more neutral person that brings people togheter and is more interested to grow the cake rather than getting a bigger slice of the cake.

At the same time I guess you are right many smaller tri forums feeling the pressure from facebook groups.

PK,

^^^ I think you nailed it. Good call. ^^^

I guess this puts more pressure on Thomas G to put a team together.

Tom,

You and I discussed this privately earlier this year.

I really question the validity of these types of teams. Already, almost EVERY cyclist and triathlete in North America is eligible for some form of at minimum 15% discount for something - member of a club/team/association, entered in a race/event, etc . . It's important to understand that, that 15% is most retailers margin and a huge chunk of the wholesale margin - and it's just default being given away.

Now, let me be clear, discounting when used specifically and strategically, as a marketing/promotional tool can be VERY effective in creating sales and driving business. BUT, when it's so pervasive, wide-spread and a default thing in a whole business, then the goal-posts in the whole business has been moved!

The bike/tri business is in some challenging times right now. In fact, John Burke the CEO of Trek recently said in a speech, that if you are above being 3.5% DOWN in the business, you are doing well!!

It's got to the point that many consumers in the bike/tri business, feel like they are being ripped off, when they are paying MSRP or even paying that now default 15% off, at retail and they are demanding even greater discounts all the time!!

Good read here from Bike Business veteran Rick Vosper - https://www.linkedin.com/...ou-offf-rick-vosper/ - "No, Your Bike Shop Is Not Ripping You Off"

So, where I would start with the discussions with these Elite Triathlon Teams or ANY triathlon club/team is what purpose are they serving?

Seriously - I consider any triathlete I see at the local races who's rocking FLO carbon wheels part of team ST. Where else would one find out about FLO wheels? (Ok, a few in BT.com, but mostly ST.)

i will host a team, under 2 conditions:

1. some folks among you all run it. you, for example, thomas. happy to have you run it.
2. there is a good reason to have it. a compelling reason that would make me want to join my own team.

I don't care who does what. I hope someone mandates that the kits MUST have only the athlete's ST username on it.

I'm content supporting my local tri team, but I would love to be able to buy a ST t-shirt (cotton preferred) that I would wear at every race so I could connect face to face with others proud to wear the ST brand on their chest and promote ST to the multisport masses.

I'd like it if Slowtwitch will sponsor my very very small 1 person team for next year. Maybe for a discount on the annual membership fee?

In return, I promise to rock the logo and never use capitalization.

You could offer special deals to your team members to the sponsors already listed in your signature. As you develop a brand more potential sponsors can come on board which would benefit you as an athlete.

Based on the content of your blog and posts here you could make your niche be a group that thinks outside of the box and finds some creative solutions. This could potentially open doors with supporters who aren't currently in the multisport market but could benefit from getting involved. Just some food for thought...

This. I would be more likely to join a Team Gerlach than a Slowtwitch team. Gerlach is always a good guy whereas some people REALLY don't like other people on ST and make it known.

Thomas, I so seldom disagree with what you say; yet, let's scale back on the Amazon analogy.

EnduranceTeams are much more like mom-and-pop shops that are likely to go out of business at the pro level and last only as long as the founders or their children stay involved. Individuals are individuals with an "anything to make a buck" approach to the sport. You are pretty respectable and good example of an Individual.

Most agree there are too many factions on ST at this time. We wouldn't have some people even shaking hands if they met, given the impression that I get.

Trying to get a team going might take away from your already proven success as an Individual.

Will there be a team LR---or will that merely be a warring faction, the dark underbelly as-it-were?

Maybe add an AR-15 and an LGBT rainbow to their special version of the kit.

There will be a LR group, but they don't race. They'll just go to the pub and argue about guns.

We wouldn't really need equipment discounts, perhaps we just meet up after races and argue with each other in person.
