The James Haycraft thread over here got me thinking. Why on earth is there NOT a Team Slowtwitch??? It seems that most of the teams exist to promote a brand and the team members get access to highly discounted product in return. Slowtwitch is a brand with Facebook being arguably the greatest competition going forward - some Facebook groups already have teams going like the Pathetics group. Dan has arguably the most connections in the business and should have considerable pull in getting to work with sponsors that Slowtwitch users would want to work with. Tom,
You and I discussed this privately earlier this year.
I really question the validity of these types of teams. Already, almost EVERY cyclist and triathlete in North America is eligible for some form of at minimum 15% discount for something - member of a club/team/association, entered in a race/event, etc . . It's important to understand that, that 15% is most retailers margin and a huge chunk of the wholesale margin - and it's just default being given away.
Now, let me be clear, discounting when used specifically and strategically, as a marketing/promotional tool can be VERY effective in creating sales and driving business. BUT, when it's so pervasive, wide-spread and a default thing in a whole business, then the goal-posts in the whole business has been moved!
The bike/tri business is in some challenging times right now. In fact, John Burke the CEO of Trek recently said in a speech, that if you are above being 3.5% DOWN in the business, you are doing well!!
It's got to the point that many consumers in the bike/tri business, feel like they are being ripped off, when they are paying MSRP or even paying that now default 15% off, at retail and they are demanding even greater discounts all the time!!
Good read here from Bike Business veteran Rick Vosper -

So, where I would start with the discussions with these Elite Triathlon Teams or ANY triathlon club/team is what purpose are they serving?
