Cheers

Amazingly it worked today with no lost data. Web page is still full of warnings though.

I upgraded my 510 to 3.4, the only thing I notice is that it seems to take longer to sync with my Garmin Connect IOS app than it has in the past, however it appears to be much more successful in actually synching.

Disclaimer - I only upload rides thru the IOS Garmin Connect app, I don't use the Garmin Express on PC/Laptop/Mac

For those that have a IOS device, save yourself time and hassle, connect your IOS to your Edge 510 and have those rides upload as soon as you hit save on the 510... so much easier than plugging in the device to a computer.

Yes, I was an early updater and it erased all my settings that I had just inputted under the old software. When I re-entered them, it kept them correctly. I don't know if they've changed the update to subsequently fix the issue.

I've seen the banner, but ever since the "issues" first emerged, I have not had one issue uploading my workouts either via iPhone (Bluetooth), ANT+ stick, or direct USB connection. And I am using three different devices (FR620, Edge 510, & Garmin Swim) with workouts daily. And as soon as those workouts are uploaded to Garmin, they auto sync over to TrainingPeaks & Strava instantly.

I get that they are experiencing issues for some people, but I can say that I am not one of them.

On a wider Garmin Connect note, who designed their "records" feature? It seems stupid to me that I don't have a fastest km or mile record simply because I've never gone out on a 1km or 1 mile run. For each new activity, why can't it calculate the fastest segment corresponding to each record distance and compare it to the current record?

I'm not sure what the issue could be for you, but as you see below, my "records" for the 1K, 5K, and Half Marathon all came off of runs or races that were longer than each. It just picked out the fastest segment from that activity & set the record.

I get the same thing - no entries for 1km or 1mile, even though every other distance is recognized. They're missing in both the new and old versions of GC,

I lost a 19 mile base run on Monday. Gone from the 910xt, nowhere to be seen on GC. It almost feels like I didn't do it :'(

i see you are using 3 devices (one for each discpline). just curious what keeps you from switching to the 920xt? (as i think i'm in the same boat as you)

With Garmin you need to lower your expectations. Their products look amazing on paper, but you need to assume you will send it in for a refurbish unit and you need to assume the software will be offline. That's just the way it is with Garmin. Apple is trying really hard to be just like them.

It's because that was the evolution of how I got into the sports over the last two years. I was a runner before a triathlete. I had a FR405 that I upgraded to an FR620. The FR405 got mounted on my bike as a makeshift bike computer last summer. I needed something to track my swims & I picked up the Garmin Swim for about $100. Then I bought a new bike & got a great deal on an Edge 510.

I didn't want to buy a 910xt because I knew a new watch would be coming soon. With the release of the 920xt, I wanted to upgrade to the multisport watch, but there is really no need until the season gets closer (and I let others be the bleeding edge guinea pigs). Since last week's release of the Fenix3, I am facing a conundrum of deciding between the two watches. I will eventually choose one of them, but in the end it really is not a priority, especially at the price point of the watches. I will wait for the right sale to come along & pick one of them up.

I have not returned a single Garmin device I have owned & short of a couple minor issues over the last 2 years, I have been absolutely satisfied. The issues you hear are from the very vocal minority. Think of the hundreds of thousands (or millions) of Garmin devices out there. If 1% of those devices have issues, and those people complain loudly enough, that's still a sizable number & it suddenly looks like all of their devices are a complete bust.

Did you verify that your profile data (height, weight, etc) are still entered correctly? It's possible that after the update it reset those numbers.

I've only had one issue with my garmin products (two 310xt (first one got kicked off during my first 70.3), 500, vivofit, & vectors). My 310xt refused to start up once and I had to do a hard reset. I learned that the problem was that I had tooo many workouts saved on my watch and it got bogged down. At least that's the conclusion I came to and was reinforced when my sister had a similar issue that was resolved by deleting old workouts.

I have had 4 Garmin devices (Swim, edge 500, fr305 and 910xt) over the last 6 years. Neither of them had to be returned even though the 305 often had some quirky behavior that was mainly due to the fact that Garmin stopped patching the firmware.

Your statement about Apple is also bs. I own 3 ipod classics. All of them working perfectly despite years of abuse by me, a horseriding wife and 2 teenagers.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

That's a great point. This is one of those things that no one thinks about, cleaning their watch of old data or structured workouts that are not being used. We all know that we should clean our computer to make it run faster, but no one thinks that Garmin devices need the same occasional digital cleaning. The less data you have on them, the faster & more efficient they will run.

Ever wonder why it takes 2 seconds to upload a 10 minute run over bluetooth, but it takes 10 minutes to upload a marathon? It's because the watch is trying to push a ton more data for the longer run. When you leave 6 months worth of workouts on your watch, it tries to push every one of them to Garmin Connect every time you sync because the watch does not know what is out there & what isn't (that's the website's job to eliminate redundant workouts). So next time it takes you a half an hour to upload your 30 minute hill repeat or bike spin, go in & delete all your old data that has already been synced from the watch & I would bet that the device will upload faster and be more responsive.

I've discussed the issues with Garmin in countless other threads. My experience has been very different with Garmin. I'm on my FOURTH 910xt. The last time it crashed was when I hit the 'lap' button while doing a track workout. My Edge was replaced twice in 2 years. The only Garmin I've never had to send back at least once is the dashboard GPS in my car. When their devices work, they are just awesome. I just have very low expectations on how long they will last . Garmin knows this, thus the reason they will send out a replacement with almost no questions asked.

if you are a bright young firmware engineer would you want to move to Olathe, Kansas? There is a reason Ford just opened a tech center in Sili Valley...that is where the talent is. I have had to return an Edge 500 and a Forerunner back to Garmin for replacement so in my book their quality standards leave something to be desired. I will say Garmin replaced both but it was a pain.

Let's not be dramatic here. Olathe is basically Kansas City. That's like saying "Who would move to College Park, GA just to work for Porsche USA?" when College Park is the adjacent southern Suburb of Atlanta where the airport is located. Or saying you are going to a game for the Arlington Cowboys instead of the Dallas Cowboys.

Yes, Kansas City is not Silicon Valley, but we also are not talking about a tech company on the scale of Google, Apple, or Microsoft. There should be no shortage of talent in the midwest willing to move to KC. I have to think there is a large population of graduates from Mizzou, KU, & KSU who end up there anyway and those schools probably turn out some pretty damn good software developers & engineers.

I'm not saying Garmin isn't without their flaws, but let's not blame their location on their problems.
