New Thread, Who do you want to win Kona???
So lots of threads on who we think will win or place, but who do you want to win? And lets keep it to the pros please, I know your spouse would look great on the top step of the podium..

For me it is Sebastian Kienle. He embodies all the traits that I loved while competing in this sport and his attitude is refreshing. He got to the top of the mountain and yet wants/needs that view again, but is ok with the climb along the way. With all his success he has felt the intense need to give something back, donating $30k of his hard earned dollars to keep the Kona pools going and free.

On the Womens side I would love to see Heather Jackson win. I have watched her since the beginning when she did Hawaii for the first time as an AG'er. Hell, I was her first agent! I got an email from some guy I didn't know saying he had an extra bedroom he would share to some athlete in need, and somehow Heather's name came across my emails and I facilitated the connection. But beyond that it has been a pleasure to watch her hard fought battle for the past decade to get to where she is now. Some success along the way to keep motivated, but really a journeyman of the sport working for every second of gains in the sport.

Gonna be a tough road for both of them this Saturday, but as we know anything can happen in Kona and someone has to be there at the end to collect the top prize..

Men: Lionel. My head says no and I wouldn't put money on him but I love the story of where he comes from which he notes is why he wants to win.

Women: Rachel. I would like the story of how ridiculous her race schedule had to be to get there and of course, mothers ftw

2024 Races: Taupo

Women: Rachel Joyce. Have loved following her since I saw her race Ironman 70.3 in Galway in 2011.

My heart is saying Lionel Sanders but my mind is saying Jan Frodeno.

On the women's side it's all Daniela Ryf.

As an American I would love to see winners from the US, so my picks in that regard would be TO & Corbin.

Because of his story, I would not be upset if Sanders won.

For betting purposes, definitely Frodeno & Ryf.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Ben Hoffman on the mens side. Used to know him and his coach and I like the work he puts in. Super friendly and encouraging person with what seems like good all around life experiences.

Ryf if she kills it. If not then I really just want it to come down to a race. Top ten all within 10 minutes of each other. That would be an awesome article to interview and read about.

I want Sanders to win because if he does it will be highly entertaining. Not only in the race but here on ST afterwards as well.

On the women's side, anyone but Ryf. Not really a fan and also like to root for the underdog.

Potts - Love the way he's raced a lot across all the distances and he's got to be close to retirement.

T.O. - Team RWB and his wife is out of work right now.

Hoffman - Despite his results, he seems to be an underdog.

Thomas, Hanson, Russell, Evoe - Because they are American.

Men's:
1a) TO
1b) Hoffman
3) Sanders

TO and Hoffman b/c both are Americans and just incredibly nice guys. Sanders simply b/c I'm a huge fan.

Women:
1) Joyce
2) Brandon

Joyce b/c of the insane year she's put together the year after childbirth just to get back (and I was already a fan before). Brandon b/c she's local and also just an incredibly nice person, always smiling.

men: Lionel all the way, he's so open about his training and gives so much of his time so to his fans, he even met my friend and me for an interview in Mont Tremblant after 6pm, he hadn't had his super, the day of the race. I'm not so sure Frodo is going to run away with it this year, I think he will be pushed much harder on the bike this year.

Women: Daniela and Daniela. She's an UBER biker which I tend to cheer for, and I don't think anyone has a chance to beat her this year.

Men - Ben Hoffman - he's american and has a great set of calves haha! I would love to see him in the end with some of the top Germans battle it out

Women - Rachel Joyce - She has come close for long enough, came back after having a baby and had a great year and it would be nice to see her take the win

Other choices - Terenzo Bozzone, Andy Potts, Linsey Corbin.

Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right!

Gotta go with Lionel for the men's. The smart money is on Frodo but I don't care. It's his story that gets me, because it's something that a lot of us who came to this sport a little later and took an unconventional path here can relate to. If he wins, there will be some really interesting conversations on here and in the greater triathlon community, too. I'd also like to see an American or two on the podium, and Ben Hoffman looks to have a good chance this year.

For the women's, I'd love to see Heather Jackson win. She's a badass. Or Lucy Charles, because she can probably outswim most of the men's field and apparently her bike and run are getting pretty quick, too.

Lionel because I chatted with him a few weeks after he won Muskoka 70.3, we have a similar party hard history, and he hooked me up with his documentary guy.

Pete Jacobs because I am battling a not too dissimilar illness that causes disabling fatigue and he gives me hope I will return to the land of HTFU.

Michelle Vesterby because she's funny.

But I'd put my money on Frodeno and Ryf (who also had some fatigue issues a few years back and shared her treatments with me).

The door for him to win is probably already closed but after this year... yeah... So I hope he wins too.

It seems to me that he is the first guy just below the cut line when you talk about the all-time greats. Had he just not needed to stop to take a relieve himself in 2015...

The podium I want

  1. Sebi/Lionel
  2. Sebi/Lionel
  3. Josh Amberger/Wurf
  4. Josh/Wurf
  5. Tim O'Donnell

The podium I will likely get

  1. Frodo
  2. Lange
  3. Hoffman
  4. Sebi
  5. Lionel

I have literally lost interest in the women's race due to Ryf. She is an awesome athlete, but the race is uninteresting and without Rinnie there, it just feels like a formality. She does not have the outgoing personality profile of Chrissie either (who did make the race a formality, but she did it with this amazing flair). Same with Rinnie in her own way, but the race was never formality, since she always had to unleash a good run and as we know with running that fast, you're one cramp away from walking.....when you swim and bike as fast as Ryf does it, and do it almost like a robot, it's not a ton of fun watching.....so maybe, I want anyone by Ryf, just so we have a race and I can get excited about the race after the 8:30 time on the clock has come and gone.

Edit: OK scratch the above on the women's race.....want Rachel Joyce to take it after her crazy qualifier run to Kona!

ut the race is uninteresting and without Rinnie there//

But how does Rinny not being there really matter, she got beat in the run too last year, and thats after losing 20 minutes or so before Ryf even started running. Face it, only the ghost of Chrissie could race Ryf today, and that is it. She has shaped up to become that once in a generation athlete. So close to Chrissie's reign, but missed it by that much....But as they say, shit happens and that is why we have the race..

Basically with Rinnie there, and her horrendous deficit at T2, there is this entertainment value of her running through the field and whether she will catch the person at the front or not. If you recall in 2012, she messed up her nutrition and bonked/cramped after coming within 100m of Leanda Cave. With Ryf's ridiculously massive leads, there is no uncertainty and entertainment. It is almost impossible for any woman to catch her. She can go into jogging mode whenever she wants if she feels any chance of cramp or bonk. Frodo can't do that on the men's side, or he'll get quickly overtaken. So there is high entertainment on the men's side. Even when Stadler had that ridiculously large lead on the men's side in 2006 Macca made it entertaining with a 2:42 run vs Stadler at 2:55. Macca got within 200m or so, but was not good enough. I don't see anyone on the women's side making it interesting....hope I am wrong.

+1000...Lionel's story never has hit a chord in my mind.

And similarly on the women's side, I'd like to see Lucy Charles win it at age 24 and start "swimmer's dominance" on the women's side. Wendy Ingraham, the last female iron racer close to Lucy in the swim, never placed higher than 4th but did make the top ten 9 times from 1991 to 2001.

I have a big stupid crush on Kienle, so I’d like to see him on the podium, but more than that, Matt Hanson. He *may* be my coach (so admittedly I’m biased), but he’s a damn hard worker and definitely deserves to be there.

Honestly, anybody but Ryf. I get it, you’re dominant. I want to see a race with more than one person in it. Probably not going to happen, but one can hope.

The only way to avoid disappointment is to not try anything at all.

I always wanted Steffen to win in the women's, like Raelert someone who has always been close. Rooting for Crowley though as an Aussie :)

Also want Nilsson to win one, and I think he will. Very tough as a rookie though but I do think that he and Lange have made Frodeno change his approach a bit.
Nilsson said during breakfast with bob, that he had improved each IM marathon by 1 min with the last one being a 2:40 In Frankfurt and that he was hoping to keep that trend going tomorrow.
Would be awesome if he broke the run record his first year!!

Ha yeah, Any time I went to the UM pool she was there before and after me. She really deserves a better swim time IMO. I know it recently got better but geez she put in the work. She also publicly agreed that a lot of Missoula routes were out of control dangerous which I had said for a while.

The past two years I have been super busy and preoccupied to follow the pro seen like I like to and have not kept up with her since her "low, or bad" year a few back.

Do I know you from back then? I was there 2005-2009ish. REALLY miss the track workouts and I have lived a lot of places.

Ya he could get the fastest time award the same time he gets the dumbass award for throwing about a 1/3million dollars in prize money, bonus money, and accompanying sponsorships that would have gone along with it..

There was at one time a scenario where this might have happened, back when Lance was pulled from the race there was a lot of talk about him being let back in as an AG'er. Typically top man is racing with the top pro women in regards to time, and this year they have to bear Ryf, not an easy beat by any stretch..
