I was at the National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in 1985. Then President Ronald Reagan was to speak. Something came up so First Lady Nancy came and spoke. Followed by a performance by the Beach Boys. Much more enlightening than the babble the Scouts had to endure last night.

He said he was NOT going to talk about politics, and then talked non-stop about politics and himself for the whole speech.

He was rude, disrespectful, dishonest, indignant, selfish, inappropriate, and buffoonish . . but he is president. Good grief! What sort of message was he trying to extend to these kids at a highly influential age?

He keeps constantly attacking and denigrating Obama. He keeps going back adnauseam to the election and the winning and losing. He keeps talking relentlessly and almost exclusivly, about himself* Even when he's talking about something good, he ALWAYS makes it about HIM!

ALL higher offices like this should be respected. However, in an open and free democracy, that many of us in the West, are lucky to live in, we may not always agree 100% with the person or the party who occupy that office. And owing to our respective constitutions and laws of free speech, we are allowed to express our differences of opinion, and if we feel the person or party in that office are wrong, hold their feet to the flame. Opposition is an important part of functioning democracies. In the Westminster System of Government practiced by many in the British Commonwealth countries, the party in opposition is given the offcial title of, "Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition".

I think we're in agreement. I believe the office should be respected, regardless of personal feelings for the man (or woman) in office. Tibbs seems to think otherwise.

My personal opinion is that a good portion of the difficulty we find ourselves in now with regard to our feelings about our elected leaders is because we lost respect for the positions themselves, which has allowed us to pay less close attention to making good decisions on who fills those offices. Additionally, our lack of respect for the offices leads to toxic media coverage, toxic dialogue between politicians, toxic rhetoric during elections, toxic talk between regular citizens when discussing politics, etc.

I was, my oldest brother is a scoutmaster, my other brother was an eagle scout and a scoutmaster, my dad was a scoutmaster. My oldest brother and my dad are at the jamboree now as staff. My dad has gone to the last 3 or 4, I think my brother has been at everyone since the 80's.

I have no explanation for WTF that was. Other than wrong. If he had any shame he'd be feeling it now.

But on a lighter note. The old guy on the left in the white shirt is my dad. He is working the zip line. He wanted to do that because he said it was too far to walk to the zip line to just ride down it once. So he works there, then rides it down at the end of his shift. Oh yeah, he is 91.

Because, presumably, grown adults aren't required to cater to the lowest common denominator. Because, it's respect for the office that should prompt people to make a better choice next time (if they think Pres Trump is a poor choice), or to hold the President to a standard when he speaks or makes policy. Because, Pres Trump will not be in office forever, and it's better to maintain a sense of respect for the fundamental structures of our nation, and to teach that to our children.

Etc, etc, etc. Really, any number of reasons that a thoughtful adult shouldn't need to have another person explain to him.

Really? I offered BLeP at least three reasons why the office should be respected. I offered you several posts worth of discussion. It's honestly a little mind blowing that the two of you apparently don't think the office of the chief executive of a country deserves respect, but I still engaged you in discussion about the topic. I never suggested that I'm the only adult in the room, because there are plenty, but you know damn well that you tend to be one of the first to adopt childish positions. If having your position questioned seems to you to be me setting up a wall of ego, then I'd suggest that you might want to step back and think it through a little harder.

We may disagree on things but THIS is the way that it needs to be looked at.

I sense we need better course in basic civics in our schools for young people. About the way government works, and what get's done. There is so much of - all politicians are liars and bums these days - yet, each elected offcial, plays a direct and indirect role in our lives. It's remarkable to me the disconnect.

Some good friends of mine have gone on to elected political life/work in Canada. Despite what the general public may think, it's an almost 24/7 job, that is totally precarious. You are potentially completely out of work at every election. Few average-joes would ever sign up for something like that - trading in their straight-forward 9/5 jobs. In fact, two of the guys that I know who have gone into politics took a PAY-CUT to be an elected offcial!

Agreed - Trump was democratically and fairly elected ( we hope), and what's done is done. He's making his own bed now, and the mid-terms in 2018 and the full federal election in 2020, will be the next time, that the general public and individual citizens, will officially be able to voice their opinion in the most powerful way they can - by voting!

Yes, I don't get it. I don't particularly like the guy either, Trump that is. But I'm not going to constantly post threads about him. Plus Cerveloguy is Canadian right? So it's not like he should be pissed about election results. I just don't understand being obsessed with Trump. You yourself point out that's a failing of Trumps, constantly needs to be in the headlines. But then don't question someone constantly creating headlines for him? I am Canadian too but really enjoy politics from around the world. I am on a discussion board with people in the Philippines, Thailand (I lived in both places) and I also lived for 5 years in the U.S. I traveled a lot and the best part about it is to speak with locals about what is happening in their lives. Right now, I'm on a discussion board with people in Venezuela because that's a great way to learn about what is going on there. A few people complain when foreigners comment but most people accept that they are just interested and it's better to have people engaged than apathetic.

As for Trump, we get all the U.S coverage so are just as saturated with him as you are, day in and day out so it's pretty hard to ignore. The people in my office talk far more about Trump than our Prime Minister because of the outlandish things Trump tweets daily and simply because we are incredulous that he is the President.

It's really nothing more sinister than that.

Because those are all more likely to happen than a scout leader.

If you want to send your kids off into the woods to go camping with Subway Jared go ahead.

It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

How many times have you asked me this? What is your obsession with my obsession about Trump? Now that is really borderline creepy.

Awesome. A great organization. The one place a boy can be a boy.

2 brothers, myself and my older son are Eagles. My younger son should be in the next 2 years as well as his oldest his cousin.

2 younger nephews are also entering Cub Scouts soon.

1 brother and myself are Scout leaders, younger brother will be in the fall.

We waited until January to get a letter from Trump instead of the last president for my older son at his request. Mine is from Bush, younger brother from Bush, older brother from Regan.

The Boy Scouts apologized for remarks made by the President of the United States.

Let that sink in.

Quote:
The head of the Boy Scouts of America apologized to members of the youth organization on Thursday for the "political rhetoric that was inserted" into its national gathering this week by U.S. President Donald Trump.
"I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree," Michael Surbaugh wrote in an open letter published on the Scouts' website. "That was never our intent."
He said that every U.S. president, who serves as the Scouts' honorary president, has been invited to speak at the national jamborees held every four years since 1937, but that the Scouts were nonetheless "steadfastly" non-partisan.
"We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program," Surbaugh wrote.

They didn't love it in front of the scouts but if it was said in front of an adult audience they would have yelled, "Bully!"

I was there as well!! Order of the Arrow Staff. we worked security for the concert. What a rowdy bunch, I got to tell ya.

On the President front, I believe it's tradition for a President to speak at the Jamboree.

BSA leadership isn't any more of a monolithic organization than any other group. Some are pro-Trump, some are not, some are very much not.

The fact that they published a public apology says something.
