Stuff looks great. Really happy with my current stuff so won't be upgrading anytime soon but if I build another bike or get an itch to change will certainly be still looking here..

Ok maybe another bike in the house needs my old brakes..

Kind of hoped you were kidding. Just got my bike back from my LBS with new (now old) omega brakes. If I would of waited a week I would of had the latest and greatest. Too bad for me!! Kind of hurts but it is what it is

Not sure but I think from the way the pads bolt on now, you could get toe adjustment with one of the 'wavy' washers, if it doesn't come with one.

I will be picking up the new stem and some new brakes for the P2 that I have for sure.

I think I will only pick up two brakes using the old ones on the rear and the new ones on the front.

The stem is a winner for sure and will be amazing on my P2.

Yes, but to get adjustment, you need 2 of those washers on each side (1 concave and 1 convex washer on each side, unless the back of the brake pad holder has a convex shape). Anyone know if this new brake will fit 2 of those washers on each side? And still fit over tires no problem?

Getting the new brake for aero savings is probably a bad idea, there is probably none.

Getting it for better modulation and maintenance, probably a good idea. I never put one on my road bike because it required too much maintenance to keep everything stopping well to be worth it. New one might be ok. Going to experiment.

For the love of aero, why keep testing at Faster?

Side note, the tare seems pretty large.

The front brake looks like a really nice functional upgrade. Gonna have to get one of those.

Bc this way if the results say it's fast you can claim that, but if the results say it was slow well everyone knows that tunnel is fucked up.

Anytime a company tests there, I do lose a little respect for their data integrity. I wonder what else they are willing to compromise on.

I wasn't going to upgrade for aero reasons, I just wanted stronger braking power and the ability to move the brake pads up and down to line up with the brake track better

I do notice the delta between the Alpha Classic and the Zipp Alumina is pretty constant between the two trips he made to Faster.

I Don't know what the sum total of issues with Faster are, but perhaps the narrowness of the tunnel doesn't affect aerobar testing as much as it might affect wheel/rider testing.

for starters the tunnel is tiny. You need a certain size to make sure you're getting clean data. That tunnel would fit into most tunnels between the screen and the platform where you're testing. You need a certain width so you don't get drag from the walls.

It's also been proven to be non repeatable. I mean when you say this about your tunnel: "The overall view of accuracy and repeatability may not be the same as a tunnel that was built for aeronautics, aviation, motorsports or other scientific research." <- taken right from their website.

They did some helmet testing special months ago. I've got shreds where the baseline helmet is ~ 10w different. The baseline should be the baseline. Or the operator should have caught that the head wasn't in the same position if that was the case. I've seen bike shreds (no rider) same thing. Baselines differ.

Look I wish it was A2 quality. I can't begin to tell you how much easier AeroCamps would be for me. I'm only 90min from that tunnel and we don't use it.

But yes if you wanted to use the search function to find more info you could.

I would be upgrading to have a better unit on the front of my P2 and my SLC so that is why I would do it and then put the older aero brakes on the back.

Now I just have to sort out what I am going to do with my EE brakes.

Actually, the guys at FASTER have been doing some very diligent work to improve their measurement process, calculations, and repeatability. The first time I went to FASTER was because I was really curious about this new "cycling-specific wind tunnel," and I keep going back because the staff is professional and friendly, the tunnel is a pleasure to work with, and they've shown me they're committed to the integrity of their data. That doesn't rule out the possibility of exploring other tunnels in the future.

The up-down channel for pad mounting reminds me of the lever rollers for the mk II. You look at it and think oh yeah, why wasn't it like that in the first place!! Sure it's not that simple though.

Would have liked me some of that up down adjustment when I fitted my brand new Omega a couple weeks back (yeah me too!!), for some reason I had to mount it onto the fork as high as it would go to make the pads lines up with the track on my Jet 9 with my P3C. This looks loads better and much less fiddly!

Hey Nick, quick question about the new Omega X and Alpha X: hypothetically, if I were to build up a P2 with this front end could I just pop off the cover, pull the wedge, and then undo the stem? If so, that process would really make travel a lot easier for me. At the moment, it's a bit of a circus for me to get my Speed Concept in a travel case.

Yes, absolutely! That was the idea behind the split front on the cable hanger.

Can anyone tell me how stiff the Alpha is with the hands in the bullhorns? (either past generation or current)

For track pursuit standing starts. I've found the HED Corsair to be more comfortable for starts than the Profile Design T2+. Which is a bit noodly. The Corsair just has a rock solid feel to it.

Why is this design omitting the ultra-low stack options that were available in the previous version? It seems difficult to find low stack aerobars. Right now I'm running a Mistral on a 56cm 2014 P3, and I would upgrade to a nice integrated solution if it existed.

EDIT: I see that the Alpha-X definition of pad stack is from the frame instead of relative to bar center. Maybe this aerobar achieves the low stack I want after all, I'll have to do some measuring.

Not sure what you mean. The low stack options are exactly the same from Alpha to Alpha X, just a 5mm overall stack difference between the bars.

Well, we already make the Alpha Classic which is similar in many respects. No plans to scrap that mold since it's already a wicked fast, very functional bar.

Sigma X geometry is posted in the store. 25mm stack, 100mm reach. Then each aero-matched spacer adds exactly 10mm stack and approx -3mm reach. Four spacers included.

For those existing Alpha Classic customers interested in the Sigma X, we've added a Fit Guide for Alpha Classic built on the one we made for Alpha X. It lets you calculate the bar's geometry with any stem you like, including Sigma X.

If you know your own fit numbers, there should be no measuring required. Alpha X has a very handy interactive fit guide.

Sorry for the website trouble! Should be all fixed now.

Regarding Sigma X, we are hoping to have stock within 2-4 weeks of Alpha X (so, 8-10 weeks from now), but until we have a firmer time line, we won't be taking anyone's money for them.

Many of us have no problems braking with the Omegas. You need brake levers that pull a lot of cable to really have great braking with them. Shimano Dura Ace levers work very well with Omegas.

There's very little public data specific to aerobars. Probably because frame manufacturers who do generate a lot of the publicly available data don't often have incentives to do bar tests.

I was hoping actually that the wind tunnel testers on ST like Aeromantis et al, coaches, and athletes who have done tunnel tests might chime in with a few insights re the Alpha's aerodynamic competitiveness.
Don't get me wrong. Majority of what I've heard on ST about the original Alpha has been great. Just checking in case there might be some data I might have missed.

ETA: And in terms of aerodynamic public data and knowledge, jackmott is better than Google. Thus my original question to him.

What worked for me was using high quality, low compression (but not too stiff that I couldn't route it through my Devox bars) cable outer, and taking care over finishing the cuts off nice and square with a file. A little bit of helical steel wire sticking out into your cable stops can introduce slop. Filing these down to make them square and smooth is 5 minutes of your time well spent, I reckon. Using a decent cutter helps. Then make sure they are rammed fully home in your end caps.

Decent cable outers, a bit of care and the Swisstop pads provided, and I'm happy with the performance of my Omegas.

Nick has done exactly what I thought a bar manufacturer should do - test a lower end bike with a bar upgrade vs a superbike to show that bars are a significant part of what makes the top bikes fast.
Looking at the design of the Alpha and now Alpha X I have no doubt that they're fast.
Having run tests in a local tunnel (with a big test area and a lot of experience) that were also run at FASTER I do have doubts about the magnitude of the advantage shown. Where the tunnel I use gave bike only results that followed the same pattern as tests from other reputable tunnels the FASTER results jumped all over the place and created differences where I found none.

Apart from that reservation - I think Nick has done a great job both on design and provision of information.

Thanks for that input! By any chance in your tunnel tests did you have any available Alphas for testing? But even if not, your opinion is highly appreciated.

How does the TriRig bar compare to the old Vision aluminium bar - the UCI illegal one - with something like a Profile Design clip on extension?

It would be better to test that basebar with something like the HED Clip Lite which is a low stack aerobar but I get what you are saying. I used to run the Old Vision with HED clip lite and vision levers and I believe for the amount it cost to run this set up which for me was $250, it was the best bang for the buck set up. Now that being said, I also snagged some old FELT DEVOX aerobars in Aluminum (Aluminium for our Euro family) and that set up might have been the best bang for the buck at $100.

I now have to wait for the new Sigma X stem as that is what I want to set up on my P2 build and while I am at it, might as well update my brakes to the new Omega X on the front of both aero builds.

I´ve got a pair of NOS Shimano Adamas aero brakes sat around here not doing much! I reckon they´re even better than the TriRig Omegas as they have a smaller frontal area, the whole brake pad thing is a bit of a ballache though as you have to cut and shave pads down to fit the holders.

Looks like a pretty good front end....

A certain Dr. Coggan may have told me that the equivalent AX Dura Ace brake - without a cover - may perhaps have tested extremely quick...

`Just an FYI: if those are the Dura-Ace versions you put on your old QR, you might want to hang onto them, and/or sell them separately. I say that because I expect them to take a bit of a jump in value once I release all the wind tunnel data I've been collecting´

You should build up a cool 1 X 10 build with those brakes and bars.

Odd you should suggest that!

The next build is a tribute to Nick´s ´Project Liberty´, http://www.tririg.com/...ty_Cervelo_S5_Review , but I´m going to use all recycled bits and as much junk stuff as possible, and call it `Project Poverty´.

I think the Alpha is a great bar, but this is my primary complaint with the current generation Alpha - there's a lot of flex when in the horns. Much more so than other carbon bars I've ridden extensively, including the Felt Bayonet, Speed Concept 9-series aerobar and the Felt IA aerobar.

I don't use them, but ride with a bunch of guys who descend like grandmas due to their fear of not being able to stop... I like the look of the brake, but have only seen them be a PITA unless they are perfectly set up (which doesn't seem to last from what my mates tell me).

Alpha X is significantly stiffer than its predecessor, due to the new truncated airfoil, as well as some design things we can do with an integrated bar/stem combo that we can't do with a standalone bar.

User error in setup is one of the things we addressed with Omega X - the new brake is very tough to set up wrong. Have a look at the installation video and you'll see how truly easy it is to set up. We want everyone to have a perfect installation, and with the Omega X, we've made that a very easy thing to do.

Puts many other people in the product business in this sport, in their place ie way behind! :)

All in all the new X line is a very impressive effort. The Alpha X looks to be the best aero bar out there if you have a flat arm position. Wouldn't mind seeing a tapered spacer or two to allow a bit of angling of the armpads, but don't know if the bolts would still mate properly with the armpads. Something to think about.

The Tririg stuff has always had a lot of creative thinking behind it but this new range marks a big jump in product maturity.

Huh...that's weird...because I had a set on my S5 and had the exact opposite experience. They were one of the most powerful and easily controlled (only 1 or 2 fingers necessary) brakes I ever used. In fact, my impression after putting some Magura hydraulic rim brakes on my Soloist last winter was that they really didn't give up much, if anything, in either category to what are arguably one of the best rim brakes out there. I've got some nice descents to try them on around here too.

Never had to fiddle with them either. They just worked.

Ok, correction then, your "friends" need to learn how to set up brakes :-/

Vested interest in this perhaps? I had always seen you as an objective guy... But I know several people with the Omega brakes and don't know any that would describe them in the manner that you did. Aero? For sure. Good braking performance? Certainly not, and especially not "one of the most powerful and easily controlled . . . brakes." No need to attack people who disagree with you, Tom.

After your posting and seeing Dan Empfield's disingenuous blurb on TriRig's site (under "Industry Feedback") basically calling these aero bars the second coming (when honestly they're great bars, maybe the best, but still an incremental step better, not a "reimagining of the aerobar" as Dan would say. lol) I think I have stumbled upon how Dan is finally monetizing this site. Ads are fine, but sad to monetize in such a way where integrity goes out the window. :(

Yeah, because TriRig is where the big bucks are at.

TriRig.com, is, if anything, a competitor to Slowtwitch, with its in-depth reviews.

From having read Dan's reviews for quite some time, he's an industry guy who gets genuinely excited about innovative stuff. End of story.

Lack of braking power hasn't been my experience. I regularly descend an 8 mile stretch with 5-15% sections with no problems. Granted I probably brake harder in traffic or at stop lights. Brakes stop just as well as my dura ace brakes on my other bike. I do make sure to clean them though, which I don't clean the shimano brakes. I can see how they would not work as well if the cable tension was not setup right or you didn't have very good brake levers. The SRAM aero levers I have seem to work very well. I also only use carbon rims when racing, so that might also be it. I don't care for the braking performance of carbon rims in the rain with either the omega or dura ace brakes.

I'm not attacking anyone. Someone made a snide comment about "making a brake that brakes" and I was just pointing out that they must be doing something wrong.

There are many variables in brake performance. How about making sure you and your compatriots aren't hamstringing the performAnce with improper setup and/or poor choices of braking materials? I'm just telling you my honest experience with the Omegas. As far as "vested interest" goes, what are you implying?

I've had them on 2 bikes and set them up on 4 others. The brakes work great.

As to Dan having a vested interest in Tririg? That's pretty funny. I guess it might take a bike fitter to understand exactly what these bars bring to the table. They are the only new bars I have purchased for my fit bike in quite some time. Adjustability, aero, integration, weight AND a really usegful fit guide. Nick and tririg are redefining what aerobars should be. End of story.

I guess I might have a vested interest too? I want one, that's for sure. Unfortunately.....

Yeah, because TriRig is where the big bucks are at.

The content on TriRig is amazing - very in depth and informative. Work and content like that, does not happen over night and takes an extraordinary amount of time and effort.

The traditional model for this, in various media ( print, TV, online etc . .), is that advertisers pay for space and the media outlet keeps supplying the great content! Of course the internet, blogging and social media have blown up those traditional models and been somewhat to very disruptive! Some people do this sort of thing as a complete on-the side hobby - think of Ray Makers Blog!

I had lunch with Gerard Vroomen, Co-Founder of Cervelo a long time ago. Gerard had an idea for a new web site he was pitching me on. I can't remember what his name for the site was, bikegearreview.com, or something like that. Anyway, TriRig has all the hallmarks of that site that Gerard laid out for me years ago - I note, with out the advertising! Gerard was notoriously, anti-advertising, but he did say to me that he would have supported a site like his hypothetical bikegearreview.com, with an ad! :)

Just to be clear -- NO, I have not paid, incentivized, or otherwise monetarily encouraged ANYONE to provide any kind of media exposure. No one in the media has a financial interest in TriRig (except me of course). I'm the 100% owner, and to date I haven't taken out any ads. I simply sent the launch information to several media outlets, and those are the quotes they provided to me.

But I'll take that as quite a compliment - the media reviews are SO positive that you think I've "bought" the industry? Wow!

Why? If TriRig can run production, logistics, shipping, warranty...etc. them selves, that is much better. Greater profit. Better ability to remain in contact with their customers. Throwing in middle men just distorts everything imo.

It would actually reduce logistics and time spent responding to installation questions (shop handles installation); it would provide in-person customer support. And, most importantly, building loyalty with shop owners could add to a moat of market security for a product that is not inimitable. In fact, it is very easily imitable: see upcoming FSA center pull brake, and by the looks of 3T's just released aero road bar, an upcoming aero bar that could compete with the TriRig Alpha is inevitable. If a shop can sell this new hypothetical bar but can not sell the TriRig Alpha, which bar will the customer buy? This isn't to say that direct to consumer is a bad model at all. But the idea you presented that a direct to consumer model is the obvious choice may not be totally accurate and it is not without drawbacks.

Edit: That said, until I see more shops providing the level of information for their local communities that TriRig and DC Rainmaker provide, I'm not sure shops are an ideal partner. The best way for shops to win over local parsimonious consumers who turn to online discount shopping is to provide them with distilled information such as: 'we tested these 5 products and and here is why we are only carrying these two models', on signage in the store so customers can walk through and become informed and for this information to be blasted out in newsletters and on their website. Until shops become brick and mortar TriRig's and DC Rainmakers, I don't fault Nick for not seeking their partnerships.

If you look at the pictures, the stem and aerobar are a single piece, like the 3t ventus or Zipp Vuka stealth. The Sigma X appears to be a standard stem that copies the design of the stem section of the Alpha X.

Yes, that's correct - the Alpha X is a bar/stem combo (so as far as a "deal" goes, I guess you could say we include the stem for free!) I don't recall being asked that question specifically, as ck21trhc said. We try to make that explicit in the opening lines of the Alpha X description, that it's a bar/stem combo. But I can add a note to the purchase info section as well.

I don't know how secure they are, but I do know that nothing functional will go wrong if you do lose them.

They don't guide or hold the wedge or arms any more.

dirt, grime, aero would be the concerns as well as the cost of replacing if this is something that is going to fall off, (ala those giro helmet issues some folks had with the magnetic visors) or get knocked off when scrubbing tire with glove(hand up against brake) after running over sharp gravel/glass

I am just curious. i'd see this as a good improvement for the rear brake on my bike, whereby I could actually adjust the pad location for different tires(training/racing) for the resultant distance change in the horizontal dropouts of the wheel.(being able to move pads up and down on the arms) currently, it requires removing brake from frame to adjust this or buying a training tire that is closer to height of racing tire(which might not be ones first choice)

The new setup of the Alpha X looks great, I like the way the di2 unit can be hidden from the wind.

With the Sigma X will the di2 unit fit inside the stem itself, or will it only fit cables? Basically the old Sigma but being big enough to fit di2 9070 controller would be ideal.

I've never been able to get one to come off accidentally. The fit is both magnetic (9mm x 2mm Neodymium, and it's a magnet-to-magnet connection for extra strength), as well as a friction fit. I've tried rumble strips, some solid bike-on-ground bashing, nothing. Previously when it was magnet-to-steel, I could get them loose in extreme circumstances. But magnet-to-magnet and they're not going anywhere.

The Sigma X Cable Cover isn't designed to house a Di2 junction, just collect mechanical cables. Instead, we recommend affixing the Di2 junction on the rear surface of the stem. Since there are no pinch bolts there, you should have extra room to "dock" the junction there (either with double-sided tape, or maybe hot glue), keeping it out of the wind while still easily accessible. Previously, the Sigma cable cover occluded the steerer tube, and the junction would fit in the space just above the top cap. Now, since we don't occlude the steerer tube, there's no "cavity" above it. But still plenty of spots to tuck a junction nice and neatly.

YES! Absolutely. And funny you should mention the entry-level bikes -- the Alpha X plus an entry level frame can actually be FASTER than a superbike costing many thousands of dollars MORE than the entry level + Alpha X. See our wind tunnel data for more info.

you can just cut the hanger off of the cheaper one.

you've not seen my poor dremel skillz :)

probably butcher the thing to death and then need to order one anyway.

would have been nice had he offered the choice of which you wanted for each brake, either with hanger or without. not saying both, simply the option. probably too small a market to bother

the shock was the 27% price of a complete brake for just a back plate

Yeah I imagine it makes production a bit cheaper to lose the extra part and two bolts, and might have some effect on braking feel to have a stiffer hanger.

I recall being able to see the old hanger move a bit under braking.

Maybe if you buy a sigmaX stem you can get the no hanger omega at a discount? That would be a synergistic deal =)

Hi Nick,

Regarding the P5 used in your test, did you also remove the drivetrain on it as you did on the P2? Also, did you have the dash wheels mounted on it as you did on the P2? I can't see that mentioned in your article.

With best regards

Markus

Hi Nick,

I'm considering purchasing the Alpha X bar to fit to my Lotus 110. It will replace the Mk1 Ventus I currently have installed, since your bar offers the ability to place the pads onto the bar and it will certainly tidy up the cable routing.

I've looked at some length at all of the pictures on your site but am still slightly confused by the routing of the cables. I will be running a mechanical groupset and a Simkins Egg brake on the front (Sigma will go on the rear). I need to run a side entry front brake because of the bulbous nose of the Lotus frame. I'm using a Reynolds Ouzo Pro aero fork instead of the dangerously unreliable originals, and this means that a centre pull brake just wouldn't fit. Would the Alpha X bars allow me to run a cable out of the bottom of the basebar to the Simkins? All of the pictures on the site seem to suggest there are no cable exit points on the underside of the bar. I think it might be helpful to show a schematic of how the brake and gear cables might be run through the bars so everybody is clear. Surely I'm not the only one with this query?

They say a picture paints a thousand words so here's a shot of my problem showing why a centre pull brake sadly won't work.

And do you have an expected date for shipping yet?

Many thanks,
Dan

It has an adapter plate that will work with both: http://www.tririg.com/...v_Frameset&num=3

I see that, but my fork has 2 posts to which the Omega SV currently mounts. You can see them in: http://www.tririg.com/...v_Frameset&num=3

As it stands, I think the back face of the Omega X would sit maybe half an inch off the front of the fork if one was to use that plate.

2014 and up Shiv forks have threaded holes instead of these posts and an insert that's used to mount normal two-post brakes. The posts on my 2011-2013 forks can't - readily - be removed. I don't know how deep the thread has been tapped into those posts. They could possibly be trimmed down to an appropriate length? Just wondering if Nick has tried that.

Not sure but I think from the way the pads bolt on now, you could get toe adjustment with one of the 'wavy' washers, if it doesn't come with one.

Is there a final answer on possibility to have toe in adjustment or angle adjustement for rims without parallel brake tracks ?

Hi Nick, the Alpha X bar looks great, very tempted by it, but I'm concerned about the wedge that clamps the stem onto the steerer, the yellow triangular part in this picture:

http://www.tririg.com/...60/000_Store_392.jpg

It seems that the contact area is quite small compared to a normal stem, so I was wondering to what extent you have consulted with bike manufacturers about this design, and whether or not they feel their carbon steerers will be 100% safe when that force is applied over that area?

are you talking shiv TT? did they change the fork on the 2014 shiv TT? I wasn't aware of that.

the shiv Tri was not released until MY2013, correct?

i'm curious as to the answer as i'd consider replacing the omega SV brakes on my 2012 shiv TT with the new omega X.

I mean shiv tri. The first one came out in 2011 and crowie rode it to the win in kona that weekend. Since (I think) MY14, the two posts on the fork have been absent in lieu of an insert into which an adaptor plate goes to use either magura hydro brakes or whatever else. The picture jackmott linked shows the Omega X adaptor plate with 2 bolts holding it up against the newer fork, I don't *think* that will work on the fork I have - in the pic I linked.

All model years of the Shiv TT and Shiv Tri uses the same mounts. Those are M8 bosses, spaced approx 51mm apart. If your Shiv has the posts, you remove them to mount the Omega X Adapter. If it didn't come with them, you just skip that step. In short, YES, the Omega X will work with any Shiv, front and rear. (Only caveat is that on the original Nosecone Shiv, it only works on the rear.)

Regarding pad toe, we didn't design the Omega X with it (see the FAQ) -- any DIY solutions haven't been tested on our end.

That is the cost to have tracking which I believe Nick does. I send shipments all over the world and to have tracking that is the cost. It is a completely different story shipping within a country where it is cheap with the domestic shipper.

Just do what I do and have it shipped to a holding facility across the border and go pick it up if you can or have it shipped to someone in the US and then have them mail it too you which will be cheaper but you still run the risk of losing the package with no tracking number or insurance.

It seems that sometimes there is a bit of thread locking compound, making it a little tougher to get them started coming out. But with a little patience and care they always do.

Having ordered the bar based on the advice I got from the online form enquiry, I'm now concerned that the information posted in the link contradicts what I've been told.

Is the only way of routing the front brake cable (either bare inner or complete with outer) through the central hole in the stem? You said on the online enquiry that I could route it through the underside of the basebar. I'm not convinced the central stem hole will work on a Lotus 110 frame because of the distance the head tube is behind the nose of the frame. In other words the cable will exit the bar straight into the top of the bulbous head tube and not into open free space beyond the end of the frame.

I still stand by my original suggestion that a picture of the underside of the production bar or a schematic of cable routings would make the whole process far easier to understand. A picture paints a thousand words.

Sorry for the confusion. Since the bar/stem are the same piece, I answered yes - the cable exits the underside of the base bar (at its center, where the "stem" portion is). However if that's not sufficient given your frame requirements, you can exit the brake cable out the back of the "stem" portion, then back and around to your brake. Should present roughly identical frontal area, and shouldn't have any problems with cable friction or routing.

Below you can see the image you requested. It shows the distance from head tube to the centered brake cable port. It's approx 45mm forward of center, I imagine still compatible with your Lotus. But I could be wrong, and you might need the alternate path suggested above.

Just saw this....Tom(and anyone else) could the brake lever have something to do with poor braking for even a 'properly' setup Omega? I have set up several sets of Omegas on my shiv with no trouble until recently.....I have some new PD TT brake levers with less pull length than other brakes. My back Omega does not work worth a crap now....Ive reset it several times and just cannot get it to actuate properly. So, I am thinking it is possible that some guys have set their brake up properly however, have chosen a set of levers that will not allow enough actuation for the Omegas...especially on the back.

Yes. Probably not enough to warrant the vitriol some customers have expressed, so when I hear "the Omegas don't brake worth a crap," there's often some combination of setup error and/or exaggeration. But other users have opined specifically about their frustration with Profile-Design ABS levers and Omega. My favorite levers are Shimano. Either Dura-Ace BL-TT79 (carbon) or BL-TT78 (alloy). I haven't used the alloy version, but I assume the same pull ratio. Also, the Di2 TT shifter/levers (any generation) use the same pull ratio as the BL-TT79's, so they're excellent as well.

And as a followup, the Omega X should be less sensitive to lever choice, due to the new geometry, materials, and ease of setup.

Thank you for taking the time to get to the bottom of my probably unique query.

It looks like the central cable hole in the stem wont work on my frame, since centre of head tube to nose of frame measurement is about 58mm. The routing out of the top of the stem may work ok with the front brake lever on the left. I'm sure my Nokons will allow a tight enough routing. Out of interest, the cable hole in the stem, is it merely a drilled hole, or is there additional material in this area to give it extra strength against the rigours of acting as a cable stop? Would there be any reason why I couldn't drill a second hole further forward in the stem? (ignoring the fact that it wont then route through the spacers, which I'm not planning on using anyway)

Hi Nick,

Genuine question and I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Now that you have updated to the Sigma X stem, will you continue to support owners of the original Sigma? To use our product in a low stack setup without any spacers below, a lot of your consumers had to cut their steerer tubes low enough that it makes it impossible for us to use any other model of stem. And those who kept spacers below their Sigma might not be able to reproduce the same stack with a regular stem. We had to take a leap of faith to let us use your product!! I for one made an irreversible modification to my beautiful P3C!! If I cut my fork down low enough to use the Sigma XF that I bought, will the new Sigma mount to that? If not, are you keeping a stock of the Sigma XF (and N35) to support your prior customers, should we ever have a problem with the stems we bought?

Best regards,

You cut your fork, you take your chances. Products change. Always leave .25 - .5cm of extra steerer.

I'll let Nick give you an actual answer now, which is most likely yes. Curious as to what supporting the purchaser of a stem looks like.

I do accept that Dave, but you can't leave extra steerer above the stem with the Sigma XF design, so if you are using it to achieve particular stack you won't be able to reproduce that with a regular stem. And if you have your stem slammed which lots of folks do, you are shut out of luck. But I knew I'd be locked in to Tririg when I did it.

I think support would look like;
"my stem broke, what can I do"
"it's ok we have more stems"
vs
"sorry we don't make those stems any more and the new one requires more steerer to clamp to" (it might not, I don't know)

I'm just a bit worried about that, but don't necessarily expect anything. But it's fair to ask, no? It's not a forty quid stem..

Cheers,
Rich.

Yes, absolutely. As of right now, we keep warranty stock on hand for everything we've ever made.

As a followup, the Sigma X clamping zone is 4mm longer than the older Sigma XF, but the Sigma X also includes the ultra-low dust cap, which is typically shorter by 10-15mm compared to standard dust caps. The result is that upgrading a Sigma XF to the new Sigma X usually means you can actually add a spacer (above or below the stem). So the upgrade path will remain for most users, but we will continue to support our existing customers.

So, on my 2012 (old) P2... Will the Sigma X clean up my cabling and fit well/ make any aero difference? Looking at that and the breaks. Also, does anyone have any pictures of what the sigma x looks like when installed on a 2012 (or any year of that model) p2?

I've got it installed, working on a review of it (probably end of the week)

After a short ride though... pretty much everything good about the original, but a bit cleaned up overall. Really like the new face plate and wedge. The one downside is that the "center pull" back plate (no hanger) is an extra $50 for those who want/need it. Kinda a jump for an already fairly expensive brake, when it was an easy piece to add/remove on the original.

I hear you. I really wanted to make it an integrated piece like the original, but it wasn't possible given certain other design constraints. I also wanted to make it an included freebie, but that was simply price prohibitive. It's a pretty small percentage of customers that really want that part, so our best compromise was to make it an optional extra.

tomaco1 wrote:

Yes, the cable hanger is included. The extra part is an optional back plate that *removes* the cable hanger. It is effectively the same as chopping off the cable hanger from the stock version of the brake. It really only serves as an aesthetic benefit, since our original aero testing did not detect a difference between hanger on and hanger off. Even if you run a cable hanger upstream (via a stem or headset hanger), you can still use the stock brake just as it is. Again, it's basically an aesthetic option. Granted, I do LIKE that option, which is why we still offer it. But we couldn't make it a freebie this time around.

Just to clarify:

The new Alpha X and Sigma X do have integrated cable hangers. However, it's not the same as the original Sigma - it's much better! The cable stop is removable, so that you can either run housing up to the stop (and bare wire from there, as on the original Sigma), or you can remove the stop and run full housing, or hydraulic lines. There are some detail shots of that in the product "features" pages.

Again, just to be clear, no bike actually "needs" it -- you can still run bare cable through the stock brake. I understand what you're saying, just want to drive the point home for others who read this.

So about 7 weeks now? Hopefully you'll see them soon.

If you have the time, or desire, I'd be interested to hear your impression of them. They're a stretch for me, but I consider them an investment in my sanity and time in maintenance during travel/training. I just want to be sure they are as friendly as they look for travel and performance before I take the plunge. It appears to be a bar that "has it all," and one that I would keep for future bikes, so that's what has kept my interest.

As much as I enjoy TriRig products that I have, and his reviews, I don't buy into marketing until I've seen some outside impressions.

Is this always going to be the case? Is the 6 to 8 week delay for the Alpha X going to be true going forward? I assumed that was just for the initial orders (back in April) but that you would have them in stock at some point.

We will eventually have stock. Right now, we are still estimating a 6-8 week lead time. When that changes, it will be very clear in the store. But as long as we're still showing the 6-8 week lead time in the store, that's the estimate.

Do you have official weights for the stem. Just about to finish my build and need this final piece and was wondering what the weight is on the new stem.

Also would you happen to know if your new Sigma X stem would work with the new Cervelo aero drop bar?

Nick,

Is there a particular barrel adjuster you recommend for mounting directly at the built in cable hanger at the top of the front Omega X brake? I really want to be able to adjust my brake pad widths but hate putting barrel adjusters in the middle of the housing run. Would putting one there screw up the beautiful aerodynamics too badly?

You should NOT use a barrel adjuster with the Omega or Omega X. Pad stance width should always be adjusted via the set screws on the side. A barrel adjuster essentially deploys the brake. That's not how pad stance was designed to be adjusted.

So just to make sure I understand correctly. The old Sigma was more or less the equivalent of -17 degree stem but the Sigma x doesn't have as much drop. How much less drop does it have? What would its drop be the equivalent be?

Pretty sure the new stem is the similar to the old "flat" stem. My quick math work out to -14 degree drop. [Tangent of 100/25 is ~14 degrees].

As stated elsewhere, we don't publish a traditional "angle" measurement for the Sigma or Sigma X. Due to their short clamping zones, a traditional angular measurement will come up shallower than a comparable traditional stem. Instead, we publish the true stack/reach for these stems, which is what you really need to compute your fit numbers anyway. Both stems are similar to a -17 or "flat" stem, but again this isn't really helpful for computing a precise stack/reach coordinate. The Sigma X has 25mm of stack and 100mm reach. The older Sigma XF has 22mm stack and 90mm reach. These diagrams are shown in the store, and both stems are included in the Alpha Classic dynamic fit guide, so you can compute your actual numbers without needing to any math yourself.

not going to order separately as delivery would be over to europe.

always seems so difficult to hand over money for product to suppliers within triathlon industry, found this with lots of brands. constant delays and waiting around, with products finally available very late in the season. the only brand loyalty i have now is to whoever can actually supply the product

Nick,
I apologize if this is too direct but your customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I have attempted to contact you guys multiple times with absolutely zero response other than the canned email your company sent a couple weeks ago. I purchased the New x-series aero system from you over 10 weeks ago being told it was pre-order and would ship in 4-6 weeks. I did so with the expressed desire to be able to use it before IMCDA only to not only not receive the system but receive no response despite multiple requests for an update. I now have a purchased bike with no aero bar or brakes waiting for you guys to deliver... Should I just plan on canceling my order through you if I'm hoping to have my bike set up in time for Austria? Am I expecting too much hoping to hear from a company that I paid good money to? Should we just take our business elsewhere? I look forward to hearing from you but I then again I should know better.....

I can personally say that I've had great experience with Nick in the customer service department. I've never waited more than 48 hours for a reply and everything has had a great turn around time. I'm certain if you didn't hear back it was a system error and not a neglectful customer service issue. On top of all that he's been great at being open and honest about the products on offer. Don't know. I haven't had a chance to inspect those bars in person. But the gap would need to be at least 32mm for the Sigma X to fit. That's the distance of the Sigma X forward protrusion.

There is no way it will fit as the gap is not large enough from what I know. That is the wish as I wanted to use the new TriRig stem with the new Cervelo bars.

Nick, I bought 2 OmegaX brakes last week. Haven't opened them yet. I decided to also get the alphaX as well. Since you have a discount on buying them together, I want that discount. But your customer service department is giving me a hard time on this.
I really don't want to return the brakes and rebuy the alpha and 2 brakes together again since it would be a hassle for both of us.
Please advise on how to proceed.

Edit: Got an email and it is taken care of. Thanks and I can't wait to get the bar.

What is the advantage of running the Omega brakes with just the cable and not the housing? I assume the aero difference is minimal if any.

Alpha X is currently in production. Our preorder customers will get their bars around Dec 1. The current estimate for new orders is early January. We've had a great response on the bars, and we're trying to get them completed as fast as possible. The development process for the layup was longer than expected, but is now complete and we're in the home stretch. Our apologies for the long wait on these bars, but we promise it'll be worth it.

No, the angle of the extensions is not adjustable, but his extensions are designed to accommodate a pretty wide variety of arm angles based on which way they're inserted and how far they're inserted into the clamps. You set your position, then cut off any extra on both ends. The downside is no angle adjustment on the pads and once you cut the extensions you're pretty well committed to that position. The bar seems great if you can live with the lack of actual tilt adjustment but that's the one thing keeping me from buying what otherwise looks like a super product.

The Alpha and Alpha X do not have independent extension tilt. But for those that really need it, the "reverse J-Bend" workaround works brilliantly. You take a J-bend with some significant degree of bend (30 or 40 degrees), and put the short end in the extension clamps, with the long end pointing up. Jesse Thomas does this with our Alpha Classic aerobar (also no independent extensino tilt), which you can see here riding en route to his historic Wildflower 5-peat victory:

And a couple more images of Jesse's bike, from his leapdaysports.com blog:

Are you specifically asking about tilt? It doesn't matter what extension you use, as the clamping hardware remains parallel to the base bar. Stack and reach adjust is, of course, independent of the base bar.

How does the ordering work in terms of if some issue came up. Looks like Paypal is the only option and that you pay ahead of time before you get the item (pre-order) rather than get charged when the item ships. Most credit cards only offer 90 days to file a dispute. If the Alpha X is shipping sometime in January, you are right at that 90 day limit. I know Nick and TriRig are well regarded and standup company. Not doubting that the item will get shipped. However, weirder things have happened and other great companies have gone through troublesome times and had issues and left their customers hanging. I guess throw down $1xxx and hope that all goes well while you wait?

If you have an issue we will abide by our standard warranty and return policies, the time periods for which will begin when the preorder items ship. As far as your relationship with your credit card company and what decisions you want to make about that, it's up to you.

The cable stop is removable, and then the bore is large enough to fit any kind of housing or hydraulic line. See the features pages for a look at the hardware.

YES! Absolutely. And funny you should mention the entry-level bikes -- the Alpha X plus an entry level frame can actually be FASTER than a superbike costing many thousands of dollars MORE than the entry level + Alpha X. See our wind tunnel data for more info.

Where would I need to look to find some data on the Omega X brakes alone?

Outside of your testing that is.

Anyone got any experience with putting the alpha on an entry-level bike. Currently riding a Trek SC 2.5 (al frame) with H3 wheels. Nothing wrong with the bike apart from a subpar position. Still riding the standard handlebar from Bontrager with an adjustable stem at its limits. I'd really like to clean up the messy frontend and get a bit lower. Was looking at the original Alpha. Is there any reason to wait for the Alpha X (upgrading to Force this winter, no need for electronical shifting). The old alpha+sigma seems good enough, I assume I'll be able to hide all the cables in the stem and but the extensions under the basebar with both setups?

Nick,

Any update on the lead time for shipping (if order placed today, when can customers expect arrival)

Also, this may be in here somewhere but if I have a fork pre cut to accomdate the Sigma XF classic at the lowest possible stack (with dust cap over the steerer), is that enough steerer to accommodate the Sigma X. What would be the delta in stack between the classic setup (extensions under bar) and Alpha/Sigma X setup as same. Trying to figure out if your new setup will work on the fork I cut down to the lowest possible configuration on the classic, and secondly if switching to the new front end will get me a little bit more drop. Thanks...

Nick, have you ever thought about making some hardware that would allow the extensions to tilt. For both the Alpha and Alpha X. I know that I would buy a set for sure if I could tilt me extensions to say 10 degrees. I have read how it can be done but I would like to have the armrest tilted as well as the extensions instead of just the extensions.

Lead time for new orders is posted in the store, right next to the "add to cart" button.

The Alpha X and Sigma X clamp zones are exactly 5mm longer than the previous Sigma XF clamp zone. Their stack to the handlebar zone for Alpha X and Sigma X is 3mm higher than the previous Sigma XF.

Tilt hardware ... possibly ...

He appears to have created new spacers that allow for extension tilt. Though from the pics, it would seem if you require only minimal amounts of spacers, you might have to forgo extension tilt.

Am I missing something in the pic? All I see is that the extensions (I think) are turned around from the "normal" way you would mount them which results in the angle shown in the pics...I don't think these aren't "titled" as others are discussing in the ERO Sports thread.

Extensions are not turned around, they are designed to be cut from both ends and in whats pictured provide maximum rise. The extension clamp and riser are different in this photo from what is currently stock on the Alpha C and X. Many have asked and suggested Nick make something like this (myself included) who prefer to have armrest and bar tilt independent from the base bar. I will absolutely be first inline to order these when he offers them!

I do not think that Nick made anything but I do believe he is mixing and matching a few items from his aerobars and another manufacturer as the items do not match very well together. They are a close fit but not up to Nick's normal attention to detail. I think this was Nick trying it out to see what is possible.

Just have to wait to see what Nick says as I am sure he is looking into the request for tilting.

Given your time crunch you might resign yourself to throwing an Ultegra 6800 on there. That being said, if you're good at wrenching, and have some time on your hands, I'd highly recommend the Magura RT8s. They are absolutely rock solid, very aero (only hydraulic aero brake), and the service from Magura is saintly.

To elaborate on that last point: I purchased a set of RT8s + levers used, but found I was unable to mount them due to the stud bolt being too short (evidently, those specific RT8s were for the Shiv which needed short stud bolts). I emailed Magura direct to discuss the issue. They put together an order for me that included two new RT8 calipers and a bleed kit (with oil and fittings) for around 50 dollars shipped. My jaw hit the floor when they quoted that price. Suffice to say, I'm pretty sure I'll be a lifetime customer of theirs due to that gesture.
