Love Phil Liggett's play by play so much better than the night crew. Maybe it is just the slang he uses. On todays stage he said something like....

"There will be a lot complaining that today was too hard, but the winners never complain"

Something like that...Pretty cool; classic Liggett, any other favorites out there.....

Whenever he mentions Nick or Stephen Roche, I get really excited and imagine it's about me (somewhat uncommon name).

Roche is really digging deep in his man-purse of testicular fortitude!

Then I go out and ride about 1/6th the distance as the Tour guys and call it a day :)

I don't know if anyone remembers when Cycling News used to have the "David Duffield commentary bingo" in their Tdf guide many years back. Duffield was a Eurosport commentator using phrases and quotes that makes Ligget sound coherent.. Anyway, it was pretty funny stuff.

That was Paul I think. It's a reference to the old Brooks saddles that had an adjustment nut up front.

"Dancing on the pedals" is definitely a PL original, and classic.

I love the way Phil always manages to pronounce riders names, teams, etc. differently every time. Back when T-Mobile was racing I heard him call them Tee-Moe-Bill, Tee-Moe-Beel, and Tee-Moe-Byle all in the course of a few minutes.

I get a kick out of how PL mis-identifies riders. You get a feeling that PS wants to correct him, but doesn't want to interrupt PL's when he's on a roll. By the time he does have a chance, it's on to the next subject. LOL.

Great thread! To puase briefly... what was he talking about with the motors in the bikes on the cobbles and having to get replacement bikes from another team? What kinda motor , that's helpful, could actually be hidden in a bike? And, didnt Contador get a replacement bike from his own team on the cobbles?

Now, back to Liggett quotes...

As I briefly understood it: riders were only allowed to swap out their bikes for other official team bikes to thwart any possibility of them getting onto an illegal bike midway through the stage (e.g. a bike with a tiny motor hidden inside the seat tube). It sounds stupid, I know. Things I never quite understood:

1) have all the "official" team bikes been previously checked by the tour officials to make sure they're legal?
2) where the hell else are they going to get bikes from if not from their team car? Some dude on the side of the road with a huffy?
3) how the hell did this stupid story about tiny motors inside bikes grow legs to the point that it's being addressed at the TdF?

One favorite of mine was in '03 when Lance, Tyler, Jan and Iban Mayo kept trading places going up Alpe d'Huez - "And now we've got a big fight on our hands!". Phil is awesome.

2). Yes kind of. But for the rule most teams would have had a staffer at each cobbled section with a team bike in case the car was too far away to help out.
3). I'm convinced this is going to turn out to be a brilliant piece of guerilla marketing by the firm that makes them. The whole debate is ridiculous and the fact it was allowed to have an effect on the TdF is embarassing. I'm as cynical as the next guy bur come on.

1. "The riders are spread eagle all over the mountain"

2. "He's a beastie boy" - in reference to jens voigt

3. "Ullrich is saying, bridge to engine room, more power! But there isn't any"

On an unrelated note, I'm really enjoying when they show the inside of the HTC-Columbia car - the things the DS says to the guys over the radio never seem appropriate for the situation. A couple days ago it was (in a unique german? accent):

"Heeeeyy Boys, ok everybooody, time to start thinking about movin up"

No particular quote but I so enjoy Paul Sherwin's interpretations of the information provided by the race organization on the region each stage is in. The stories about the castles, the history of the towns- the background info. I love that.

The Tour de France is a "tour" in some sense, that it is a braod sporting event that brings sport to the people and now, the people and their homes to us through the media. That connection is a wonderful insight.

Part of the grandeur of Le Tour is that it is never just one story... one plot. It is many stories on many levels being written and told consecutively.

Jim Caple can be hit or miss, but he had a good send-up of P&P today:

http://sports.espn.go.com/...e_jim&id=5367105

"After watching the Stage 3 carnage on the cobblestones, I think the Tour de France directors should really have spiced things up by ending a stage in a major city during rush hour without closing off the road to traffic.

Phil Liggett: "Lance Armstrong is absolutely seething at this red light, Paul. He's so upset his yellow Livestrong band has turned purple."

Paul Sherwen: "It could not come at a worse possible moment. He had two minutes on Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans, but I'm afraid he's lost all that waiting for the light to change."

Liggett: "He is waiting impatiently, NOT turning the pedals in anger, while having a very heated discussion with the driver of the SUV who nearly drove him off the road. He's giving him the same look he gave Jan Ullrich on Alpe d'Huez. But at least Armstrong stopped at the red light. Mark Cavendish went through the intersection. Or more accurately, he got partway through the intersection."

Paul Sherwen: "Yes, the Man from the Isle of Man will definitely feel that tomorrow, Phil."

Liggett: "Still, we should have a very interesting finish, as long as the police have dispersed the striking transit workers on the Boulevard Jambon et Fromage."

We met PL at Vancouver airport after the winter Olys. He is an absolutely lovely man; every bit as nice as you'd expect him to be.

Mrs G66 told him, very enthusiastically "We love listening to your commentary! We're such huge fans!"

To which Mrs PL interjected dryly: "Well, somebody has to be."

I think he's kept pretty well grounded at home.

My fave is always "the Heads of State of the Tour de France", on a mountain stage, once the men have been sorted from the boys.

At the end of today's stage, they were commenting on the intensity of the climbs and how the fans were screaming at the riders to get to the top of the climb and finish. Phil says "this crowd demands pain." I thought that was fitting for this thread.

I haven't noticed outright tension but there have been a few moments where Paul has probably been rolling his eyes.

One comment I noticed was earlier when Kittel likley still had aspirations for the green jersey, and when he didn't make the bunch sprint Phil said something like "well if he's not going to win the race, he doesn't care where he comes." Clearly if he wants to win the green jersey he most certainly does care where he comes, even if not first!

I think it was also mostly Phil's fault about all the confusion about Contador's bike yesterday. The guy reporting from the race (forget his name) said he saw a broken frame being loaded into the team car, and 30 seconds later Phil is saying "so it looks like a cracked frame could have been the cause of the crash". The guy out on the course also noted that Contador appeared to have slid 100 feet on the ground. Knowing that it was clearly a bad crash (based on the long skid marks on the grass and the blood etc), it was far more likely that the frame was broken in the crash, than it suddenly cracked and caused the crash. As it turned out it was neither. But it was such irresponsible reporting to have put 2 and 2 together to make 5 and say the frame cracked and caused the crash!

I believe the guy sliding 100 feet was Tiago Machado who actually got into the ambulance, but then got out and back on his bike and finished the stage.

I'd have to dig out my old tape to find it, but it went something like "He is in great form this year after having won the Tour Dupont this year, where he finished 2nd behind Breukink and taking 3rd place on the podium."

I can talk about nothing for extended periods, according to TriSpouse, but I take my hat off to people like Phil & Paul. They do a stellar job. I mean, in essence, it's pretty much the same every year. A bunch of guys ride their bikes around France. Up hills, down hills, through the countryside and towns. A bunch of times, they fall off.

While baseball and other commentators can talk for several hours about nothing in particular, Phil and Paul do it day after day, week after week and year after year. Hell, they start at the Tour Down Under and get fully warmed up by July, and carry on for all sorts of other races in between and after. I take my hat off to them.

Come to think of it, I come to work every day, 250 odd days a year. Every day I do engineering, go to meetings to talk about engineering, write reports and specifications about engineering and I've been doing it for 30 years! I'm at least as good at my job as they are at theirs. Well maybe not. They sound mildly interested. I'm clearly bored stiff by engineering work. LOL

My dad and I used to listen to Braves games back in the 80's before tbs or TNT, the Dale Murphy-Bob Horner years. By the sixth inning or so, the Braves were usually getting beat so badly that you'd think it was a bass fishing broadcast.

This week our local sports talk radio was talking about what sport is the hardest to do radio for. One said that soccer had to be one of toughest because it's non-stop action with no real breaks except at halftime. Other guy went the opposite and said by it's nature baseball is the hardest, because you have so much filler time, that it really is on the announcer to hold your interest. Actually made a lot of sense.

Phil up to the bitter end had dismissed any doping by Lance. Even after Lance admitted it, Phil had played it down on air. Reports of the two having common business interests may have something to do with it.
Me, I think Phil has lost too much. Whether he's lost it mentally or visually as in it seeing the screen matters not. Time for him to retire.
Paul is fine. I like Schlanger, Gogo not so much.
I wish they would bring Hummer back; mainly because he is an acquantice of mine and I think he's a good guy.
Todd Harris I can do without.
VDV might grow into a decent commentator, we'll see.
Bobke is always just goofy fun.
Andrej was good, got bumped out be Lance due to his wife.
I like Steve Porino, or at least that role. Someone on a moto in the the peloton brings new info/viewpoint in.
