This is a custom full aero machine from Roark Custom Titanium Bicycles (www.roarkcycles.com), mine will be the same setup minus the couplers for travel and a few different components. I'm getting zipp 404's and a zipp crank.

Those Rolf 58TT's are SWEET though! Rolf's site is worth checking out. www.rolfprima.com

They're VisionTech integrated bars (stem/basebar/extensions all a single unit). Very comfortable setup, but I've just changed them out 'cuz I'd maxed out how low I could go and I wanted to go lower. The extensions have been cut down somewhat.

This is actually the 1st time I have posted a webshots photo.....it took me several tries and some experimentation. And, I can't figure out how to post a little bigger. Webshots was updated recently and gives links to photos to be used for posting, blogging, e-mail insertion, etc. I have no tech savy at all....I just played and got it done. Note, that I recently updated my webshots desktop software. There was a button there that said get updates. Did I help you?

If I owned a De Rosa like that bottom picture I wouldn't be embarrassed about anything!. That's beautiful. (I'm really getting into retro bikes.) Is that a Brooks Swallow saddle? How does it treat your butt? I'm thinking of putting a Swallow on a restoration I'm going to do in the spring.

To be honest, I haven't ridden enough miles to break in the thick leather of the Swallow. I own other leather saddles which I love though so I'm sure once I've racked up another 100 or so on the old girl the saddle will fit my buns like a form fitting bra. I also run tubular tires which feel awesome on a vintage ride. This bike was made in 1985; kinda strange it is already considered vintage in the bike world.

What kind of bike is your restoration project?

Yes I know verticals are 80's I live in a house that was built in the 60's and remodeled in the 80's. At this point I would rather spend my money training then worrying about the blinds. Most days there open, water is about 300 feet past the blinds. No tandem for me. The roadie is kinda evil, she takes most of the abuse around here. I am really starting to love the tri bike, thats my first one.

This one's done up porn-style with race wheels etc. Here's one of me riding in training:

Everti Titanium Bicycles (formerly known as Epic Titanium Bicycles) is a Canadian company that produces unique Ti builds. The new road frame, Pheonix, has some really cool tube shaping that, while contributing to the bikes performance characteristics, looks really cool to boot.

A few reasons. "Some" tests say the HED3 wasn't as fast but the biggest reason was tubbie vs clincher. If you run clinchers out here you're going to spend the big bucks with all the thorns and cacti. The new disc is a clincher. I really liked the HED3d but you know me, I learned from you : ). I love switching wheels.

During the ride we had the other day with the group, we had 7 flats in 33 miles. I use Tufo tubular clinchers with sealant, and never have to worry.

That's a sick bike, Everti should be very proud of what they have put together there.

Personally I would try to get them to build a custom ti version that has better aspect ratios on the aero tubes, and a maximum width of around 25-26mm. Something similar to the Cervelo P2 in terms of shaping, but with a nice compliant rear end (despite having crazy thin seat stays of course). Tall order to fill, but I think someone with a lot of Ti experience could pull it off.

How are your armrest mounted? It doesn't look like you used the usual method of stacking spacers and somehow mounted them directly to the basebar. Is that accurate? If so, do you have any better pics showing it?

Thanks.

When I run water bottles, I will use a Profile Aero Drink on the front (sometimes... I don't like it much) and/or a couple bottles mounted to a very simple behind-the-seat system. For longer training days, I keep the bottles on behind the seat, but often take them off for racing.

I haven't decided what my setup will be for long-course duathlons this year yet.

I race duathlons and like it.

The bars are Token Mono-Q CF (being replaced this weekend with Zipp SLs), the drop isn't bad but I don't like the anatomical bend beneath the brifters. The saddle is also a Token Carbon creation. It fits my rear and is really VERY comfortable. The stem is 100 mm. I just completed building it a few weeks ago and I'm still tinkering with it (this is part of the fun right?) :)

At first I was really worried about the carbon drop outs on the fork and the frame, but these seem extremely sturdy after several arduous rides! Comfort is quite good, there is lateral flex if you "shimmy" the steering back and forth really quickly, but no one actually rides like that right? I very happy with the overall result, it is a very comfortable, quick feeling bike!

Chris,

As you get as old as me you'll understand that the few seconds I "might" loose makes NO difference. My training wheel sets all have the Tufos. The Renn has a Continental : )

And......I hate to start this up, so please let me voice the opinion and then let it go...........the Tufo tests are done with a huge amount of PSI. You have to run high psi and I'm talking 150 or more when using Tufos. They are made this way. I have beam bikes so I don't care about psi and comfort. Tire pressure on a Zipp bike makes almost no change in comfort. Its a "beam bike" thing.

So, when you see me go by.....on a flat, on a climb, on a downhill.....remember, I'm running Tufos, riding a beam bike and I'm old : ) LOL

.

OMG, you've hung Christmas lights over your Star Wars doll collection. For your sake I hope your mother doesn't come in your room and discover what really happened to that missing strand. Oh that's right, mother and little sister never penetrate the interior of your room which is so cleverly guarded by that "Do Not Enter" sign.

Okay, yes I'm a sci-fi geek. And they are not dolls, they're action figures!. Those aren't ordinary christmas lights either, every Trek ship ornament made, 13 so far, are hanging from them. My two boys love to play in my downstairs office/trainer room so those toys actually come in real handy. Besides, they'll end up with all this stuff eventually. Except for the original 12 Star Wars figures (second shelf up on the left, next to the Lost in Space robot). I'm taking those to my grave ;)

Nice ride, but clean up the powertap cables. I had the same problem when I used zip ties. I use clear tape, like multi-purpose tape and run along the entire length of the top tube and down tube. Now the PT cables are basically invisible. Really cleans up the look of the bike.

I like the Minoura system better than the X-Lab because it sits closer to my butt and the bottles are lower and easier to reach.

I didn't take the Zipp decals off. Tai made me some black-out stickers to place over them. Real easy to put on and take off...just use a hair dryer.

I have the seat tube flipped and the saddle all the way forward on the rails so I think it should be around 78-79 degrees. I have not run the seat tube angle formula yet but I was planning on doing it soon. It’s an awesome machine, stiffest bike I own but still rides smoother then my other bikes. I really like the Bontrager front end. The only problem is that I can’t afford race wheels after paying for the paint scheme! But it was worth the money.

You should see the paint scheme in person. I don’t know how they do it but the paint is scratched under the clear coat so it looks like polished aluminum. Everything is painted on, even the mouth and eyes. They even spray that rust color over the mouth so it looks rusted like the rest of the details. I want to give a plug to Mike at P1 he painted mine and he did an awesome job, if you get a P1 bike make sure you have him do the paint work.

But having said that I still am very aero and I can stay in the aero bars all day long no problem. Although, I may need to get a little shorter stem.

What's with your bottleholders? I also have a ttx flying ace and when I ordered it I was asked from trek if I want the two bottleholders painted matching to the frame colour. You obviously decided no to?

I received carbon cages in matching colour. I was asked if I wanted them when I ordered the bike. You obviously also didn't want the LAF donation tag on your bike? I was a little surprised that they painted my name in yellow on the tube, that looks a little aggressive, I would have preferred silver or gray.

Did you use a half of a basebar-to-extension clamp and a set of risers instead of the normal pad clamp and two set of risers to raise your armpads? (I hope that was clear!)

Do you happen to have an closeups of that setup? Are you using one front and one rear hole on the pad holder instead of two side-by-side holes?

I've never seen it done that way. Interesting.

True but with Shimano Derailuers the way he did it is the way that works.

I'd be curious for Jens input as to why he did the mix & match.

Interesting how you mixed Campy and Shimano shifters. I guess that's one way to clean up the Shimano cables. Nice bike.

BK

Thanks. Originally, I went with a pure "Shimergo," two-Campy shifter setup. But even with the Jtek adapter, I was getting a little extra chain friction from rear derailleur alignment issues. Once I get that worked out, I'll probably go back to it. I really love those Campy shifters.

I'm not familiar with the jtek adaptor. Does that allow you to run Shimano derailuers with Campy shifters?

My bikes have always been Shimano, but I very much prefer the "cleaner" cabling look of Campy. However, that leads me to my next question, why not just use Campy derailuers too?

Did you use a half of a basebar-to-extension clamp and a set of risers instead of the normal pad clamp and two set of risers to raise your armpads? (I hope that was clear!)

Do you happen to have an closeups of that setup? Are you using one front and one rear hole on the pad holder instead of two side-by-side holes?

I've never seen it done that way. Interesting.

Steve

I had a bunch of left over parts from another pair of T2's that I put on my Carbon X base bar(on another bike) so I took the aluminum armrests and mounted them fore and aft on the basebar-to-extension clamp. Works well as I am able to tilt the armpad forward to line my arms up nicely with the shifters. (I hope that was clear ;-)
Here are some pics that show it better. I have since cut the steerer tube down and the pads are tilted more forward as I removed a couple of washers out from under the forward mounting post.

The jtek shiftmate allows you to do that, as well as some other combos (including SRAM):

http://www.jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm

The other possible solution is this:

http://www.hubbub.com/articles_ergopower.html

though for me, I couldn't accept the slight increase in chain friction from the latter solution (yeah, we're probably only talking about a watt or two, but it's something).

I just have so much invested in 9sp Shimano cassettes, freehubs, derailleurs, etc. it's hard to envision doing a complete switch to Campy.

Thanks for the pics. Interesting setup you have. I can see the benefit of the ability to tilt the angle just a bit.

I also have my T2+ extensions under my T2 Wing basebars, but went the conventional method of using 2 sets of spacers (and a couple of washers). This puts the bottom of the armrest directly on the base bar (so, slightly lower) but doesn't allow for front/back tilting like your method. The standard method is probably slightly lighter, too. (Although, that's not really the issue that most make it IMO.)

The only "problem" (for me) is that it doesn't look like you can get the extensions out as far with your method (before exceeding the min insertion mark) since the basebar-to-extension clamp is much longer front-to-back than the standard armrest clamp. Unfortunately, this is an issue for me, since I have long arms and like the armrest pads right under my elbows. (Don't tell anyone, but I actually have my standard clamp a little past the min insertion line.)

Cool stuff, though. Thanks for sharing.

Steve

I actually thought that may be have been a problem too, but it turned out to be fine for me and I actually ended up moving the extension bars back towards me after riding it for a bit. So I am well forward of the min insertion line. I was going to do the "standard" way but after sitting there and looking at all my extra parts this way made the most sense (I didn't have two standard armpad mounting brackets). The other advantage for me is that I like my pads closer together and by using the basebar-to-extension clamp I can get the pads in nice and close (closer than I can with the standard mounting bracket while still keeping the bars/shifters at the appropriate width apart for what I like).

The next things I am going to do is cut the back of the extensions down just a bit and I still want and can get a bit lower so I will probably try to get a different stem with more drop as I am all out of spacers to remove ;-)

Cheers

Sounds like it's working out for you, then. Well done.

Just a thought...

It looks like you have a fairly tall headset cap. (~20mm from eyeing it.) Do they make a more low-profile one?

My Dual originally came with a ~25mm tall headset cap for the IS-2 headset, which I was able to replace with a ~5mm tall cap.

It'd be much less expensive (and likely much easier to find, being 31.8) than a new stem with more drop.

How do you guys like the t2 wing base bar? i am thinking of moving to that or the carbon version soon due to getting a new stem that wont work with the vison i have now.

Nice Ride!

I like the T2 basebar and extension combo as it gives you a lot of room for adjustment. I had a Carbon X (with T2 extensions) on my last bike and found it worked great but was limited in setup/positioning options. I looked at the carbon T2 version (cobra) but found for the extra money there wasn't any real advantage besides a small amount of weight savings.

It was funny watching it beat all the fast looking cars. I guess aerodynamics are not as important as you would think.

We just polished the nails and used a ton of graphite. We also rolled the car back and forth to make sure it went straight. Other than that, we just got lucky.

We're working on a lego block with wheels this year.

OMG, this is NOT a pinewood derby thread!

But since it has turned into one... some of those guys really get into building cars. There was a grown man at my son's event who had two metal briefcases full of these decked out cars. One even had a rocket engine; of course, it wasn't BSOA legal. I guess some grown men need hobbies to keep them from torturing dolls in their mom's dark basement.

There are entire websites on how to build the perfect machine.

Re: Post a pic of your machine [mtuck] [ In reply to ]
Ok, here's our trick. Build the front of the car so that the leading edge contacts the very top of the post only, have the body of the car cut away sharply from the top, like the reverse of a typical roofline.

As the pin starts to drop, the car will begin to move, whereas the two cars pictured, the flame and the police car will not, they won't move until the pin is compeltely seated into the track as the front of the car is also the lowest point and thus the pin would have to be further retracted before the car starts to move.

The next step is to lathe turn the wheels' running width. Turn them down from the outside leaving only a very narrow ridge, like the wheels of a locomotive. This is tricky as the rules used to state you couldn't narrow the wheels, be sure to only narrow the contact patch on the track.

Lastly, reduce the weight as much as possible and reposition it as rearward as possible by drilling the back of the board and filling it with lead. Get it up to the weight maximum to the gram. The more weight you can add to the back of the car, the more you move the center of mass up the track, gaining potential energy.

Powdered graphite is so 1990s also, try to find a dry lube with some buckyball technology.

I don't have any pics, but I think I've still got the undefeated car in a shoebox somewhere.

What size is your Litespeed? I have been considering a titanium bike but I am only 5'8" so I would have to have a 51 or smaller and only want 700c wheels so the Tachyon is the only choice; any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks,

It's the 58cm size. I think it's a 59.2 top tube. I have a 110mm stem on it.

I like the saddle. I only have about 10 hours on it. It replaced an Arionne. It puts the pressure on the sit bones almost exclusively and there is NO pressure on the junk. I like it so far. My max ride time is three hours and I feel like i could ride for four and not have to stand up.

Finally finished building up my road bike. I decided before my son was born last year that I would try to build up every bike that I have wanted. So this was going to be my weight weenie build up.

Giant TCR Zero Aluminum frame.

Bar Tape: Fizik * 50g
Bottle Cage: Carbon cages* 23g
Bottle Cage Bolts: 4g
standard bolts* 12g
Bottom Bracket: Dura-Ace 7700 Octalink* 172g
Rear Brakes: Zero Gravity Ti* 90g
Front Brakes: Zero Gravity Ti* 90g
Cables: Nokons* 118g
Cassette: Shimano Dura-Ace 7800 12-25* 185g
Chain: KMS X10 SL silver with links missing* 224g
Crankset: FSA CARBON PRO ELITE Octalink* 526g
Crank Bolts: FSA* 22g
Derlr (Front) Dura-Ace FD-7800-F* 74g
Derlr (Rear) Dura-Ace RD-7800-SS* 182g
Fork: Easton SL Straight Cut to size* 316g
Frame: Giant TCR Zero* 1070g
Handlebar: Easton EC90 Equipe Composite* 194g
Headset: Cane Creek ZS* 72g
Headset Cap/Bolt: Custom Top Cap. 4mm spacer with carbon cover 2g
Headset Spacer: Carbon spacers* 8g
Pedals: Speedplay X/2 SS* 198g
Quick Releases: Velo-TI Velocity Titanium Skewers* 68g
Seat Binder: Giant w/rubber ring* 24g
Seat: Fizik Arione* 240g
Seatpost: EC90 Composite Road* 155g
Shifters: Dura-Ace ST-7800* 420g
Stem: Syntace F99 260* 104g
Tire (Front) Conti Grand Prix 4000* 204g
Tire (Rear): Conti Grand Prix 4000* 205g
Tubes: Ultralight Road Tube* 68g each 136g
Wheelset (Front): American Classic Sprint 350 w velox rim tape* 551g
Wheelset (Rear): American Classic Sprint 350 w velox rim tape* 755g
Misc Option: 1 1/8" to 1"' reducer Token reduced and drilled 10g
TOTALS:
grams: 6500
pounds: 14.33

The bike rides great and is a perfect fit. The only changes in the next little while will be aluminum inserts (anodized black) for the Speedplays, the forks will be stripped of all stickers (Easton puts way to many on) and clear coated again to give it a NUDE look and possibly a new lighter seatpost.

Might have to talk to Tai to get some new stickers done in a medium grey to give it a bit of a stealth look.

Just got it built up - my first tri bike. Had it out for its first ride last Sunday

Still needs a bit of dialing in on the front derailleur and the fit will be redone in a couple of months once I have more time in the areobars. But given we had 25 mph winds and a wind chill of 22 degrees on Sunday - it was a great ride, and the legs felt good for the run after. Way better than my 64 cm Fuji Roubaix. Comfortable in the areo - at least what little time I could spend since I am not confident enough in the high crosswinds we were having. It was built to allow me to tweak the position for riding up in the Blue Ridge, or out in the flat lands in a more dedicated tri setup.

Build basics - T14
SRAM Force gruppo
Spinergy Carbon SPOD
180 mm Rotor Cranks with a compact front (50/36)
TriComp tires

Total weight - 19.5 lbs

The frame seat angle is 76 but the real one with the seat position is at 77. I find myself moving forward to get comfortable so will probably try it at 78

And my garage sale find. I took it out last weekend for my first ride on it. Had a blast but I really need to tweak because I couldnt get comfortable on it.

A lot has changed since I shot this photo. Groupset is now SRAM Force. Wheels are now PX 101's. Bar tape is now silver. Saddle is being changed out as well (going with an Arione Tri2 Carbon). Stem has been flipped and a spacer removed. I would post the revised pics but I'm still waiting on the wheels to finish gluing, and the saddle to come in. Oh, and the rear bottle carrier is gone.

I sure did.

I don't like having to quit due to a flat, so I'm sorry to offend ST etiquette by not photographing an unrealistic race setup. The Bento box was surely weighed down by the two gels placed inside it - must have added at least four ounces. But I have no spacers and use an adjustable stem with negative tilt for a slick aero position. Aerodynamics trump weight, and it was a training exercise for me to begin with. As the sole judge of my own performance, I give myself a passing grade.

Really cool looking bike and carbon weave on the wheels. Looks a bit slack on the seat angle for my taste but it looks sharper than a Joe Jackson record cover.

That R3-SL that good?

Either of the R3's are that good. It's a cliche, but you really have to ride these bikes to appreciate them. And when I say ride, I am talking 2+ hours. It's miraculous really that a bike that is steel I-Beam stiff, can also deliver extrordinary comfort after hours in the saddle, but somehow Cervelo has managed to achieve this in the R3 series. Riding them is believeing them.

My new Fixed Gear build for the winter. I am just waiting on some custom parts but as it stands it is 13.51 lbs. Goal is to get it under 13 lbs.

The stem will be flipped and I will loose a spacer or two, new carbon conical spacer, new carbon spiderless chainring, KMC X10SL chain, Fizik Bartape and some new lightweight tubes.

First ride was great until the first corner when I forgot that I could not stop pedaling. Did not go down but it sure woke me up very quickly. All is good now.

It is funny that you mention that. I was finishing the build on Sunday and my wife comes out to the garage and says to me. "IS THAT A NEW BIKE?". I did tell her about this one and that I was getting it. I guess she had not seen it hanging in the garage. So she says "Oh it is not black that is why I noticed".

So how long do you think it will take me to get it painted black like the rest of my bikes? I actually like the natural color but it would look great painted black with white decals.

I might just have to think about that.

Looks like there are more of us on the Ceepo Venom. The bike is light, rides great on bad asphalt, but stiff when you jump on the pedals. The aero frame tubes are super thin and the rear wheel is fully enclosed with a nice tight wheel gap. And it may not look like it in this pic, but the seat angle is 77 deg:

Looks like there are more of us on the Ceepo Venom. The bike is light, rides great on bad asphalt, but stiff when you jump on the pedals. The aero frame tubes are super thin and the rear wheel is fully enclosed with a nice tight wheel gap. And it may not look like it in this pic, but the seat angle is 77 deg:

Oh crap! THIS was the bike!!!!
