The track we used this past weekend had the posts coming up from the underside on a hinged board. Here's a pic:

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks,

Make sure to place the weights as far forward on the car as possible.
I wonder if you could change out the wheels for some ceramic bearings?

OMG, this is NOT a pinewood derby thread!

But since it has turned into one... some of those guys really get into building cars. There was a grown man at my son's event who had two metal briefcases full of these decked out cars. One even had a rocket engine; of course, it wasn't BSOA legal. I guess some grown men need hobbies to keep them from torturing dolls in their mom's dark basement.

There are entire websites on how to build the perfect machine.

Ok, here's our trick. Build the front of the car so that the leading edge contacts the very top of the post only, have the body of the car cut away sharply from the top, like the reverse of a typical roofline.

As the pin starts to drop, the car will begin to move, whereas the two cars pictured, the flame and the police car will not, they won't move until the pin is compeltely seated into the track as the front of the car is also the lowest point and thus the pin would have to be further retracted before the car starts to move.

The next step is to lathe turn the wheels' running width. Turn them down from the outside leaving only a very narrow ridge, like the wheels of a locomotive. This is tricky as the rules used to state you couldn't narrow the wheels, be sure to only narrow the contact patch on the track.

Lastly, reduce the weight as much as possible and reposition it as rearward as possible by drilling the back of the board and filling it with lead. Get it up to the weight maximum to the gram. The more weight you can add to the back of the car, the more you move the center of mass up the track, gaining potential energy.

Powdered graphite is so 1990s also, try to find a dry lube with some buckyball technology.

I don't have any pics, but I think I've still got the undefeated car in a shoebox somewhere.

Hey, I'm just happy I'm not the only bike dork out there that has to build pinewood derby cars. I can understand finding seconds on a bike, but all this crazy stuff out there for the pinewood cars is just nuts!

You think any of those people have stumbled on this site and thought the same thing about us?

Harald Strasser of Toxik Design Laboratory in Vancouver, B.C.--great guy, very creative. He is a big McLaren fan, and got the color from their F-1 cars. But when Porsche came out with the new GT3 RS--Tai made some decals for me to go for this look....

Yes, it has a chain now! ...and some brakes and cables. Just waiting for SRAM to bring the barrend shifters for the Force group to market (probably have to go DA and a Jtek adapter for the present). Also planning a Stinger 60 for the front.

why did you go with SRAM for a TT set-up? the only upside of SRAM is the double tap technology.

..because I've been using SRAM chains and cassettes for awhile and like them, the rear derailleur is lighter than DA, and once the shifters are out it should be a tight performing setup.

Now I see why you went to 700c and sold off all your wheels.

However, I don't think I would have done the same...still plenty of good carbon frames available for normally sized folks in 650c. If it were the other version though, I would see the point.

If it were the other version, I would have had to sell off my car as well as my wheels. After riding 650 wheels for 15yrs on a QR Superform, couple of Kestrels (original Km40EMS and 500SCi), a Litespeed Blade, a Felt B2, and a Cervelo P2, I figured it was time to give the "grown up" wheels a try.

Here's mine.

I am in the process of painting an OVAL A900 fork to match the bike better than its original paintscheme. But that is the only thing I will change on the bike...
