Next month, I should have an app finished that allows people to view your progress on workouts, etc real time. Not perfect for tracking speed/mileage, but they can see on the map where you are and when the updates are from (time). I told my wife if the dot stays in the same place, that's where they'll find the body.

It will work on most android phones, iOS and Blackberry 6 (haven't tested). But it's dependent on the phone's GPS.

The Mapmyride team has an app that is supposed to do this, but it apparently doesn't work as advertised.

You have to pay $4.99 for it, and it only works on the iphone.

Mine works on the desktop and mobile phones...and will be free. Not near as nice as them, but it's something I'll use, and was more a project to get into a new programming language and framework.

I should have added, that I was looking forward to an alternative. Now if you can get the phone to read your power and heart rate data and send it real time to your coach who can then call you in the middle of your ride and call you a slacker, that would be worth spending some money at the iTunes store.

I'm holding out for one (an app) that will dial 911 (and/or) my wife if I come to a sudden stop (or stop moving for X period of time) and don't tell it that everything is OK.

Once that shows up, I'll move out of my 5.99/mo prepaid phone and get a real phone.

I use an app called Latitudie for iPhone that automatically updates my Google Latitude position whenever I'm moving. My wife can see my location from her iPhone or on the laptop (anything with a browser). For $2.99 it's worth the money. I'd be curious to try the free option mentioned above.

MyTracks does this. http://mytracks.appspot.com/ Free but android only.

sorry to derail the thread.

Yeah, the only reason I don't have mine up is I've been testing against an iTouch (no GPS).

It's web based, so it will support most new phones. If anyone wants to test it, PM me and I'll give you an account.

Yeah, I thought there was one of those, but there isn't, so I'm planning on writing it for Android. My only concern is that people drop their phone, etc. and all of a sudden there are a ton of false 911 calls going out...

First off let me tell you how glad I am that you're still with us and are making a great recovery. We recently had two cyclists killed while riding on low low traffic roads here in Oklahoma City. One was a hit and run and that made me think of you. The other driver still hasn't even been given a ticket... grrrr...

Anyway, I've started always riding with my blinkies on. I have a Planet Blaze on the rear and a Planet Blaze 1W bike light that strobes on the front. I was approaching an intersection last night finishing up riding some hills. It was getting late and the sun was setting. The intersection had grass growing up so you couldn't really see much through the grass. I had seen a car though approaching the intersection as I was coming down the hill so I got on my brakes and stopped at the stop sign. To my amazement, the car was just sitting there. They had seen me and I guessed was expecting me to blow through the stop sign. I just smiled and waved and they drove on through. But the only way I could imagine that they saw me was the blinking light on the front.

Last week I was following a pack of riders of whom only my wife and her friend had rear blinkies. When they where riding into the shadows of trees, and I was in the sunlight, they completely disappeared except for their red blinkies. If I had been a car and traveling at a much higher rate of speed coming up on them, I may not of seen them until it was too late.

I don't know why more people don't ride/train with them. Maybe it isn't "cool". But to me they are every bit as important as wearing the stupid looking helmet.

Hope you are back to racing soon!!!

Hrm. You'd almost need something like the key tether that you have on Jetski's, etc. Clip to jersey, other end jacks into phone. Turn on app, if phone becomes motionless without dongle being removed, it calls. Of course, then the disadvantage runs the other way, and if you crash and dongle comes out in crash, it never calls.

In my mind the feature needs to be built into an app that has to explicitly turned on, and when triggered it begins say a 30 second sound and light show prior to calling.

I *would* definately buy that app.

My wife works in the ER and she tells me how the drunks see the blinkies and somehow end up aiming for them. I never use them. Hope they work for you. Stay safe.

:D That's why my first step was "Turn on app". The problem is say you are motoring along at 25mph, and hit a bump that causes phone to fly into the grass. It sits motionless for 20, 30 seconds (Whatever the timeout is), and then starts the light show. You're 1/2 mile down the road.

What would suck is you have the app running, get tired and sit down under a tree for a nap (Forgetting to turn app off) and wake up surrounded by police/ems. :p

The most beneficial thread I have ever read on a cycling related forum. Rappstar thanks for your insight and advice, you have me thinking on a whole new plane when it comes to safety.
Thanks for enlightening us all and my wishes for a speedy and complete recovery!

I posted this in a different thread, but figured some people may have this thread watched.

I found this today:

http://www.my-911.com/

I don't have a droid to test it, but I've fired off an email to the company - will see what I hear back. May con a friend into installing it on his droid to check it out.

Haven't really followed this thread until today. The whole thing about a friend being killed on his bike has me rethinking things. I have not been able to drag myself back out on my bike. Rapp, does that ever go away? Have you changed anything about how you ride or safety precautions you take?

Scott, I just bought a Droid, but really don't see the value in that app. My perspective is if I am alive enough to use the phone then I'll do it, if not then leave me. I jest slightly here, but this is the perspective of someone who has spent 21 years in the EMS field. I don't care to be a vegetable. Maybe that is selfish.

Hey Rappster,
Are you still on coumadin? Any anxiety about being on a bike while taking it? BTW, I think it's great you were able to race LA so soon (relatively) after what sounds like a horrific accident.

No, I'm not on Coumadin. I didn't ride a day outside on Coumadin. I was on a very low dose, but it just wasn't a risk I wanted to take. I got off Coumadin June 28th or so. It took me five days before I was brave enough to ride outside, but I was able to about 2 days later, given Coumadin's half-life and my dosage.

I borrowed a friends Droid X for a while today and installed a 30 day trial of this.

Seems pretty slick - the cycling settings may need some configuration to not be to sensitive.

Take aways:
Can notify others via phone/email/text message on demand/impact.
Can notify Brokered call center on deman/impact.

The notification on impact can be configured to run in the background or in the foreground only.
There is a user configrable delay before it notifies - when the "SOS" is triggered it starts screaming with a really LOUD siren, and pops up a button to cancel the notification.

The default cycling settings seem pretty sensitive, but it's configurable so have to check it out some more.

Overall - I'd say that between this and instamapper - I'm almost sold on dropping my virgin mobile burner and upgrading.
