1700g is heavy for anything but a bomb-proof training wheel.

zipp 303 tubular = 1124g
zipp 303 clincher = 1627

hed jet40 tubular = 1708
hed jet40 clincher = 1758

Like cmetri says that is pretty heavy. For example Zipp 303s weigh 1124g in tubular form for 700c, 999g for 650g.

Unless you're going to be doing serious climbing in your races - like miles of 8% grade - you shouldn't worry about weight. It will make absolutely no difference.

these are clinchers and the weights look pretty similar to the ones posted above.

Just for comparison, I think the Mavic Carbone SLs are about 1,800 grams per pair (clinchers) and 1,700 grams per pair (tubies). You see plenty of pro road cyclists on these wheels on courses where weight *does* matter. Pretty much the only time you should care about weight is if you're going to be a) accelerating repeatedly (probably not in any triathlon), or b) climbing steep hills for extended periods of time (probably not in many triathlons). Besides, an extra pound is a ridiculously low percentage of your total vehicle weight on the bike (which is truly what matters). Run some models on www.analyticcycling.com if you're really interested in what's marketing hype and what's physics.

If the price and quality is right on the wheels you're considering, buy 'em.

is this wheelset all-carbon, aluminum, or both, what hubs, etc. I think Shamals were around that depth but weighed more - and they were aluminum rims.

Go to Analyticcycling.com and plug in the numbers in the "Less weight on Hill" toolbox. Like jhendric posted, weight doesn't matter unless your climbing long climbs. Work on generating more power.

How about 1800g for a set of 14 gauge 32 spoke Mavic open pro rims with Campy Chorus hubs but this included skewers and rim tape. All wheel weights that I know of are without skewers or rim tape.

1700g is less than what Mavic Ksyriums weigh and everyone who owns them believes they are aero wheels. It must be the reduced spoke count but have you ever looked at how thick those aluminum bladed spokes are?
