shimming cleats ?'s

basically, when would you do this? i have heard that putting a shim in is typically done for over-pronators, which i do slightly. if shimming my be needed, how would it show itself? today on my long ride, i developded some pain in the back half of the outside of my foot--where the foot starts to narrow back to the heel. before this, i hadn't noticed any problems, although i did experience similar pain a couple years back during a race. i am concerned as this pain would seriously compromise my ability to run after the ride, and would likely start hindering my ride given that i am training for im cda. any thoughts as to whether i should look into shimming?
