itching for a new bike...any thoughts on cervelo r5?
i have a couple of bikes. p4 and s2 mainly.

now that i started focusing mainly on riding due to shoulder injury and racing down the road i was gonna buy myself an r5. i would use the s2 for racing and r5 for general every day riding.

I have the 2012 r5 with ultegra di2. Because of tri training (mostly trainerroad and tri bike) I don't get to ride it that often but I really really love it. I was going to get another trek madone but my tri shop had such great deals with the r5 frames that I saved a ton of money rather than doing the project one build.

Light, stiff (bbright platform responds well to stomping and grinding hard) and its pretty too! Even with the ultegra it's a shade under 15lbs and the lack of internal wiring wasn't an issue as the di2 cleans up nicely.

I'm selling mine, and it's probably the best all-around frame I've ever ridden? Why? Because I am addicted to my cheater bike (S5) for racing, and wanted a cross bike. Could not justify n+1 for that purchase, so the cross bike replaces the R5 as my "normal" or backup road bike. But make no mistake, the R5 is a sublime bike: light, responsive, rides like a dream, but it's the handling that really sets it apart. Surgical precision descending and in technical maneuvering. The stripped-down frameset is sitting in my living room and I already miss that bike.

Plenty stiff (yet comfortable). Tyler Farrar uses it in field sprints, and he's putting out over 1500W. Overall it's a great road bike. The S5 is faster in general, but if you want something super comfortable, responsive, and built for climbing go with the R5.

Where do people hear stuff like this?

It's a few years old now, but given what you are facing here's my comparison of the Cervelo S and R series road bikes - this case comparing my R3 to my wife's S2. It might be helpful for you:

i appreciate it fleck.

good review. it sounds like having the s2 already the r5 would be great for me. especially since i am riding more and more and its more comfy. having said that i already think the s2 rides so well and is so comfy to my p4....
