round tubes would've been been better than shaped tubes in 90% of the shaped-tubed bikes in the market today. i believed that a decade ago and i still believe it today.
therefore, you see companies like cannondale changing course, and making aero tubes in 2004 that actually have a chance of being aero.
hooker (historically) and more recently cervelo and softride, have made bikes that are actually more aero than round tubed bikes, and they've done so without making their bikes behave badly in other ways. not very many other companies have made that leap.
