device for extra resistance while riding?
Does anyone know of a product that would provide extra resistance while riding? I would like to ride with my partner, but they are a significantly slower rider than I am. I'm thinking something which would allow me to tool around and be pushing and extra 100 watts for the same speed. thanks for any help!

Fat tire/snow bike that is real heavy???

I have the same sort of issue. On the rare occasion that I do get to ride with my wife I just take it very easy and enjoy things. She gets pissed when I've done one leg drills uphill and pass her - don't recommend that!

Smaller gears?
Or chill and just encourage your partner, not make it into a training session.

Wouldn't it be easier to just install your aero wheels backwards for more drag?

Why pink? That plus a really baggy shirt or wind vest will do a bunch.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that speed, for lack of a better word, is good. Speed is right, Speed works. Speed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

That's a cool looking device that gives the OP exactly what they want, but expensive!

It might be more fun to get your SO an e-bike.

Or, as others mentioned you could do some gator hardshells, some baggier clothes about 3/4 unzipped, and a camelbak or backpack.

Pink because he only wanted 100w extra resistance.

He doesn't want to ride in reverse, silly. ;-)

Gatorskins and baggy clothing as previously suggested. OR, you ride your mountain bike while your partner rides a road bike. That'll do the trick!

If we're talking road, the one person should be on a roadie and yourself maybe on a cyclocross bike with knobbies and flappy clothes. And offer to do most of the pulling.

Then, make it a Z2 day.

Don't combine social and work days unless you're well matched up. It's a bad idea.

I posted something from my phone, but it didn't come thru. CRAP.

Anyway - the answer is simple: A Burley trailer, with a kid in it.
You can do 100% of FTP intervals at 14-15 mph.
Grades greater than 5-6% end up being HIIT sessions.

Short of that nuclear option, the baggy clothes and slow tires (Gatorskins) would knock a few mph off your usual speeds, on any given bike.

The other thing to consider doing, is just ride a slower bike when training with your partner.

The hierarchy from fastest to slowest is probably something like:
TT bike
Aero road bike
regular road bike
cx/gravel bike
hardtail/xc mtb
trail/dual squish mtb
fatty

I'll often ride the fatty when noodling around with the fam, so we're all going the same speed, and I'm not completely napping while doing so.
YMMV.

This might be the dumbest advice ever given on Slowtwitch, but here it goes:

Maybe you could get a cheap bike, more importantly cheap wheels / rims made out of something really heavy and durable.

Then buy really cheap break pads in bulk and adjust them before each ride so the break pads rub and slow you down a lot.

I'm not really mechanically inclined so I have no clue if this is even possible or if the pads would stay consistent over a 1 hour ride. If you are only riding with your partner once a week or less, maybe it is actually an option you could try. If you are riding daily then this is probably more of a hassle than it is worth.

As someone else already posted. Tandem

You can go all out while she does little to no work. And you will never leave her behind on the rides.

A burley trailer with the kid(s) or dog(s). Those will slow you down a bit also. Especially if it is hilly or windy.

Now of course they do make multi seat bike of three or more if the kiddos are older. Hell get a three seater and take your wife and one of her friends along.
