Zipp disc-pricing help-urgent
Dear all,

I got a deal on a new Zipp disc (2006 model?-bought in December 2005 and raced only one time on an Olympic event) from a friend that didn't liked the wheel (has the 606 and loves it). He is offering it to me for U$950 with a Vittoria Open Corsa or EVO (do not know exactly) tubular tire already glued and raced that Oly race he did.

Please help me. Wich price is honest to close this deal? How do I evaluate the wheel? What should I ask or pay him? What value would be a really nice deal? Should I do it?

If I got he deal done, wich front wheel would you reccomend and why?

Thanks, cheers, Marcos.

$950 for a dimpled disk with one race on it and a new tire is a killer deal

Um, I don't know how to tell you this, but, hmm, that is a terrible deal. However, since I am a giving person and all, have your friend contact me immediately and we can work something out. Ahem. Okay?

Record, put down the Lubriderm. Tai, go away. Go away Tai.

What about the front wheel?

Is that true that Zipp took off some weight from the discs made/produced on 2005? Is that a considerable difference?

Thanks again, Marcos.

What sort of courses do you ride?

How much do you weigh?

Are you a grinder?

How are your handling skills?

What sort of courses do you ride?
Short/Sprint to Half IM (one on rolling terraidn and the others on flats). Usually with 0 to litle wind condition

How much do you weigh?
65 kilogram = 143.300 pound

Are you a grinder?
Is that definition correct for "grinder"?

Grinder

A slang term for a person who works in the investment industry and makes small amounts of money at a time on small investments, over and over again.

How are your handling skills?
Biker and triathlete since a young teenager

Do you consider it a fair value? Any consideration of the front wheel to pair with it?

As long as we're discussing the aero benefits of a Zipp disc without comparing it to a wheel cover, it's a great deal.

However, if we're discussing the aero benefits of a Zipp disc vs. a wheel cover, it's a terrible deal. But you probably knew that.

Agree with you. The point right now is the price. What do you think about it? Should I ask for some discount and offer U$800 on the disc? Talked to him and he said it comes with a Bontrager skewer he has from some other wheels.

Again, any opinions about the front wheel should I get?

Marcos.

1. That's a great deal. Take it or I will.

2. A Zipp 404 or 303 would be a great choice. You could go deeper but I would not recommend it as you weigh about the same as I do and I won't even ride a disc due to the weight.

3. Grinder = someone who pushes big gears.

Most flat races done on 53-17/14 around 40km/h.

Do you think should I not consider this wheel as per the weight/handling/acceleration and other issues?

I think you should consider any wheel for all of those relevant issues. There was a good discussion regarding the benefits of a disk over on the Counterpart Coaching Forum:

The Zipp disk is one of the most respected, light, fast, drool-worthy disks out there. $950 is a great deal for it. The wheel cover guy is just noting that compared to any disk a wheel cover can be a little, okay a lot, more cost effective. If you can get it cheaper, than go for it but $950 is already a great deal. If you want to save some money maybe check out a Renn 575 disk, under $500, a bit heavier than the Zipp (just a small bit) and probably more bang for your buck but not quite as "cool" as the Zipp.

I'd pair it with a front aero wheel, Zipp 404, 808, Hed Stinger 60, etc depending on what your budget is. You'll do well with any of these pairings.

I don't believe there is any difference between a 2005 and 2006 Zipp disk.

That's a killer deal for a zipp disc with a new tire. Get it.

Agreed. That's an outstanding deal. That same disc on eBay will go for over $1000. There was one that ended two days ago that went for $1200 (it was brand new, but yours is close enough).

It's just eyeball the wheel really. Since it's your friend, I hope that you can take his word on everything else (that the wheel is indeed new and has only been used like he says). If you want, you can spin it in a truing stand or take a look at it and how it shifts side to side near your brake calipers, but I'm guessing Zipp's tolerances are so tight that the disc will be quite true.

For that disc and a front wheel, I'd do either an 808 or a 404 depending on if you think handling an 808 will be too much or not. There are plenty of other front wheel options, but since you have a Zipp on the back, I'd do a Zipp on the front just so you have a matching set from the same vendor. :P

I think my brother's '06 disc is 9 grams lighter than my '05. That's within the manufacturing tolerance. I've weighed 2 '05 discs on my scale. One at 952g, the other 959g.

I wanna go fast!

Wich tire model and dimension to put on the front wheel? I pretend to go on a 808 front wheel, any inputs on these?

What to say about Tufo tubular tires, wich model is the most reliable? Is that comparable or even better than Vittoria? Here in Brazil I can't find any Tufo riders!

Thanks, Marcos.

I'd go 21 or 22mm on the front. I use a Tufo HICC Lite tire which I think is really durable and a great tire but there's been a lot of research lately that suggests that the Tufo tires are a good bit slower because of higher rolling resistance. All I know is that they are very durable tires that have never let me down and I've ridden very fast on them. The Vittorias are really nice too. A little more flat prone but they have a much smoother ride. If it makes a difference all the Brazillians out here ride Tufos:) I have to make a "BOCA Hawaii" sign right now for the biggest triathlon training clinic out here right now run by a Brazillian guy.

U$800 for a new 808 front wheel. Is that a reasonable price?

Generally speaking the Zipp's are over-priced and more a status symbol than anything else. I was just picking on you chosing the word "reasonable". The wheel is fine.

They ride Tufo's maybe because Cid from InsideOut Sports recommends it to the vast majority of friends I hear down here in Brazil. Primarily because it's one of the cheapest tires around, what matters a lot for us!

Marcos.

Any place to shop online nice tubular tires with great discounts?

Would you mind looking at it (do not know if you can see the pictures I tried to publish here) and helping me in analyzing this wheel since I am not an expert and never had a disk?

Any other pictures needed? Details?

The tire is not an Evo from Vittoria, but my friend told me he has one raced one time only and will give it to me.

Marcos.
