Zipp 440 wheelset -- How much is it worth? Help please.
Hey there,

I posted it on the classifieds by mistake...here it goes.

How much is the Zipp 440 wheelset tubular with 4 tires included (Continental Sprinter) and Bontrager Skewers worth?

It is in good condition and it has yellow stickers and carbon hubs. I don't know what year it is...does anyone would know?

Does anyone have any idea of price or if it is a good deal?

I have this Cannondale Six13 that I was going to sell cheap, but I was thinking about trading it for the wheels.

Thank you so much!!

you have got to be kidding.

but i'll tell you: put all that stuff on sale on ebay for a starting bid of 99 cents. after 7 days, you'll know exactly what it's all worth, and you'l have a winning buyer to boot !

Where would you want to swim ?

What hubs are they? All in all - I would bet $500-$700ish to the right buyer. That is if they have the Zipp carbon hub.

What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

Wow....the cannondale six13 is a frameset only, but I'm starting to think that the trade is not a good deal. Is this wheelset worth what...$200-$300??
Thanks.

Go onto eBay and check completed listings for Zipp 440 wheels and you'll get a better answer than we can provide. You'll need to sign up for eBay membership if you haven't already to get completed listings. You can also find out what your 6-13 is worth too.

I see a fair number of these wheelsets come through the shop, and they are getting pretty darn long in the tooth. The vast majority of the 440s I see are cracked, bulged, or otherwise suffering from some kind of fairly to really serious problem.

I would never buy one of these wheelsets without inspecting it in person - photos are really not good enough.

When you're saying bulged, are you talking about that little bit of a bulge at the spoke nipple?

To an extent, although I see that on close to 100% of these wheels; I don't worry about that bulging too much, unless it's really bad, or cracks are starting to occur at the nipples. That bulging does generally mean that you'll never get a re-lace out of the rim, though.

The bulging I was referring to is brake track bulging, although I actually see less of that in these rims than in the later, more recent vintage.

I honestly think that the only one of these rims that I have seen in the past several years that was in perfect condition was the one I sold a while back, and that wheel was essentially unused...

Interesting you should mention lack of relacing. I relaced my entire rear wheel when I broke a few spokes, and it's held. I spoke with Zipp and they said it was just due to lack of angle-drilling, and by all indications the rim failure rates were no higher for those with minor bulging than those without.

Although a bulging brake track...ha...yeah I probably wouldn't buy that.

I see a lot of people who want to replace/upgrade the hubs on these old rims, and my general take on it is that once the rim takes a "set," and bulges around the spoke, you might be able to relace to the same hub (if it isn't too far gone,) but the outcome with different hubs/patterns is pretty iffy.

Most of the rims I see of this type and vintage are plain and simply cracked, almost always at multiple spoke drillings; but, as Josh mentioned in an earlier post, most folks seem to fall into the "Zipps are super fragile" or "Zipps are super tough" camp, and the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. In my neck of the woods, it seems like Zipps just get broken, and essentially everyone I know who sells or owns them has a surfeit of stories to support the position...

I certainly don't think carbon wheels are indestructible (note: I don't take your comment as a personal remark) but I'm surprised at their durability for a given weight. That said, I think most users aren't aware of how tough they are on their carbon wheels. I was told once that riding carbon all day, every day is a terrible idea because 'they break so easily', when in reality his last broken wheelset was the result of a 35 mph head on collision with a barricade that also broke a few bones. Most of the ones I've seen cracked or otherwise destroyed thus far have been the result of rider idiocy (read: group rides) or just bad timing in traffic (go go gadget monster pothole).

However...a decade-old set of 440s? Eh...that's a bit too much gambling for me. For a nearly identical cost I'd try to score some Cosmic Carbone SLs and feel a lot safer. As a friend of mine said, "I'm pretty sure you could run those over with a Mack truck and be fine."
