Woman Attempts Swim Across Atlantic Ocean
Quote | Reply
Ok, congrats on making the attempt all in the name of $250,000. Ridiculous. Wondering what all you swimmers or even perhaps long distance swimmers thought of the contraption she'll be swimming in? All the other long distance swim attempts I've seen involved just the swimmer and a boat. I never seen anyone swim in an oversized fry basket.

That's f***ing awesome! Scary as hell, too. I hope she makes it.

"In 1994, another Frenchman, Guy Delage, claims to have swum the same route that Figge will attempt, but with a kickboard. His swim was unsupervised and has not been authenticated."
Does that mean he supposedly did it alone? WHAT?!

swimming 6 to 8 hours with no rest

so, she will rest, on the boat, the other hours of the day?

man if you can't actually SWIM acros the atlantic without the aid of a boat, im not sure Im inspired by this.

Won't the sailboat's prop be pushing the water back at her? Seems like a lot of extra work.

there is something weird about this whole story. I started looking for an April fool's date on it or something. Swim across the Atlantic with protection and support is one thing. But some dude just swam across with only his thoughts and a kickboard? Really? And she has run nearly 3000 miles in her life? I work with some athletes who will get that much running in in 9 months. Whole thing is bizzare.

No way.

Also, what did the Frenchman who claimed he swam the 3,000 miles eat along the way (if he were unaccompanied)?

Should I be impressed? Because I am not really impressed. I feel like I could do this if I really wanted to and had $250K to waste.

"Figge, who trains above 8,000 feet at her home in Aspen, Colo., will swim in a wetsuit that deflects the harmful rays of the sun. The workouts will be strenuous, causing her to vomit two or three times a day during these long swims."

Sooo strenuous workouts are now defined by if you throw up or not??? Why would she be swimming that hard for something where she is just swimming long?

It may have already been done:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Delage

Guy Delage has set a number of ultra-endurance records that include a "swim" across the Atlantic from an island off the coast of Africa to Barbados in 1994. During the attempt Delage pushed a surfboard-like apparatus in front of him and towed a raft stocked with special liquid food and a water desalination apparatus. In one episode he was seperated from his raft during a storm, a certain death sentence. He found the raft floating in the ocean after several hours of searching.

When he reached the shore in Barbados at the conclusion of his swim he could barely gain the beach since he hadn't stood upright in so long- over 30 days if my memory serves me correctly.

This woman is kinda whacky...check this video out and hear her say, "It (the cage) will create drag on the boat so we use less fuel because it takes quite a bit of fuel to stay with me"?

That actually makes some sense. Its a sail boat, which would go too fast normally. so the engine is used to slow it down. that uses less net fuel I guess than not using a sailboat at all.

but still

is she swimming for 8 hours then sleeping on the boat?

that
just
doesn't
count!!

Pool gutters aren't for catching water spillover just so you know, they're for the hard sets that make you throw up ;-)

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

Why can't they just use a smaller sail? Or poke some holes in the existing sail?

I don't know anything about sailing, but it seems awfully wasteful to me to have an engine slow the boat down when they seemingly could just make the sail less efficient.

I dont see how she can do it in said time? How many miles an hour or miles a day can we expect her to swim? My math = 2100 miles/ 57 days = 36.8 miles a day / 8 hours a day = 4.6 miles an hour. Is that right?

As far as those who think they can do this if they "really want to," I say step up. Swim 8 hours a day non-stop on the weekends, or what ever days you have off, for a total of thirty days. Remember, without pics, video, and witnesses, it didnt happen.

When Diana Nyad swam one of her big swims (Cuba to Miami I think) she too had a shark cage and she took some heat due to the draft it created. I think this net too will aid her a bit.

It's not "English Channel Rules" with the wetsuit and the rest on the boat but who cares - it's serious!!!

I'm more impressed by the guy that swam the entire length of the Amazon River last year. Remember that? He has a documentary film and book coming out about it. He had to swim in a full wetsuit to protect himself from needle fish. Although needle fish may have been his lest concern in that river with crocs, piranah, I think there are even shark in the Amazon strangely enough. Here is an article on it. That dude drank like a bottle of Slovenian wine every night for recovery...What a nut case, but it was a cool story. http://news.mongabay.com/2007/0409-swim.html

If she swims for 8 hours, then there are 16 hours of the day when she's on the boat, and it's absolutely impossible to keep a sailboat in a fixed position in the open ocean, so what are they going to do- sail around in circles every night so she can start where she stopped the next day? I think the whole thing sounds impressive, but I'm curious what 'rules' they have.

" The Catamaran will be shipped to Spain or France in mid-November, and the crew will sail it down to the Cape Verde Islands, where Figge already will be waiting"

A bit shorter I guess. And that would be only 'part' of the Atlantic. Why not leaving from Afriva or Europe coast?
