He is a really good American Half Ironman triathlete. Came up through collegiate club and started to smash it.

Seen his name here and there, but seems on a different level with this performance.

His dad Rodolph is a pretty good triathlete too and long time ironman racer. European guy migrated to the US https://iono.fm/e/442277

Looks like we're going to see Rudy's name more and more! He did win IM St George too this year right?

That article was last year, and he's had an even better year this year. Also got 3rd at the 2019 Challenge Championship Samorin and I believe was leading for a bit and lead changed hands a couple times until Kienle imposed his will

He was a very solid college racer.
Started getting coached by a Luc Van Lierde and got WAY faster.

I kind of have an awareness that he's supposed to be pretty good...but I have more of an awareness of "Rudy Von Berg's Dad wants to kill our wallets with his Ironman AG Drug Testing Petition".

Washed up footy player turned Triathlete.

Awesome dude, awesome triathlete - so happy to see his success this season, hoping this is the year it translates to Worlds for him on home turf in Nice

re: Gomez... I'm wondering if any of this distance hopping is going to cause issues for him/Brownlee

I hope you’re kidding. The guy won the 70.3 North American Championship and the 70.3 European Championship this season. He also won the 70.3 South American Championship and 70.3 European Championship in 2018. He’s basically been the most dominant 70.3 racer on the planet the past two years.

This thread really highlights how fickle a sport Triathlon can be. Lots of distances, lots of 'championships' and world class events. You can rock up and really perform over a long period of time at these events and still fly under the radar if you don't get the right coverage.

Can you imagine how much advertising would have been generated if Lionel Sanders won the races Rudy won last year! Being a professional athlete is as much about marketing and getting your image/brand out there as it is about actually winning. I bet people are still watching Lionel Sanders video's because of the interest generated on ST but he has done nothing in months. Poor old Rudy needs to get a better marketing strategy in place.

He who understands the WHY, will understand the HOW.

Good point about Von Berg having a high ceiling in terms of capitalizing on marketing his racing success. You look at certain athletes and they get a tremendous amount of attention in terms of marketing and sponsorships. Von Berg needs more production in terms of promotion. He’s just too good not to get more attention and fan fare.

Probably a half dozen stories on this site alone on his wins, certainly one of the new young guns coming up. But did you see Gomez's run to catch him? 1;07+ to miss by a hair. Rudy had to really pull out the stops to keep that train rolling past him in the last meters. Maybe we will hear more about his ride, looks like a small group formed and Gomez either missed it, or had a problem..

Gomez’s run was insane. I would have loved watching it on Facebook rather than IM Cork.

For sure, some of his sponsors are brands with less of a tri presence, like Colnago, so it's less in your face in the magazines and in banners on websites around his accomplishments, than what you would see with some others... But the last two years he's pulled out some big 70.3 wins at some bigger events (continental champs) against solid fields, so he's moving himself from the status of dark horse to contender when ever he lines up... and on the beating Gomez piece, according to his social media, the answer was "with great difficulty"...

Exactly.

You'd have to be blind not to see what this kid is going to do. He will be a World Champ one day if he stays healthy.

Nah you’re misinterpreting his skill level. He’s a top level 70.3 athlete. Like top level. Not 2nd tier. Has been rising like a meteor the last 2 years. Not surprised at all he beat Gomez. Lightning on the run.

Been following him on strava for a while and he's made some big gains on the bike, as well as having solid swim and run pedigree from his ITU background. Kinda ideal athlete for the 70.3 distance.

Not sure if he will win the Worlds in Nice but a medal would be a good effort. World Champs races tend to function differently from the Conti Champs at 70.3 as shown in Port Elizabeth last year where he came 10th after having a great season. He's leveled up since then, so add in the Nice bike course and hes a factor.

The irony of your post is off the charts. ‘Yeah Von Berg won the championship race, but did you see Gomez’s Run?’ The
exact premise of thread is how some athletes get all the attention win or lose, case in point this is a perfect example.
