It's for downhill trail running. Let's not get crazy here.

Last week I talked about the running shoe industry going bananas. This is what it looks like. That said if this shoe actually delivers on it’s claim you will buy it. Most trail runners don’t necessarily float down hill. If this helps you float and saves your quads maybe it’s worth the $250.

Exactly.

There's gonna be some super niche-y stuff on the horizon. If it serves the purpose, buy it. If it doesn't, don't.

^ This.

This is the upshot of the whole Vaporfly/Alphafly debacle. Shoe manufacturers are FINALLY being forced to innovate again, rather than just changing colors year after year. The running community at large, despite all its pissing and moaning over "cheater shoes" will be much better for all the innovation. Some of it will work and will be widely adopted (and copied) and some won't. That's what innovation should look like.

"Using this product for anything other than running may impair balance and dexterity. It is recommended that you don't wear these on stairs or while driving."

Alrighty then. What if the race has stairs? What if I have to drive to the race? You can't expect me to change shoes.

Call me crazy but where do you have a only downhill race? They have to run uphill too. Oh maybe they will change shoes in between :)

Why would they have to run uphill? Do skiers have to ski uphill, too? :P

Agreed - they are making shoes easier on the joints as well enabling people to run more. It’s a good time in the industry.

A first brief review :

https://www.runnersworld.com/...e-trail-shoe-review/

"virtually impossible to turn an ankle"
"massive cushion for downhill"
and apparantly, they work quite well uphill, despite bulk and weight

I do not run on trail a lot, but regularly going south-west of France and pyrenees, and have several favorite trails including 20 or 30% (or more) downhill, generally destroying my quads for a few days.

250$ is expensive, but if it can save my quads (and my ankles), why not. Let's see what come from other reviews.

Maybe also the concept of the "extended heel" will be included in a more "normal" trail shoe, with a more normal price.

Yeah that one is 1,653 ft decline. Some are really significant. Mt. Hood is 4,758 ft.... https://www.runrevel.com/rmh

Or be first to use them at cheese rolling and clean up. You don't do that in the US?

If the cycling industry can market gravel specific clothing, shoes, etc. surely some one in the running industry can market clouds that you can strap on your feet for running downhill.

That's a totally wacko shoe look, but if it really is 'virtually impossible to turn an ankle", I'd buy those for sure given that I've torn all my ankle ligaments and have to wear hard braces to prevent ankle turns just in case!

No one has mentioned that the shoe looks like it had butt implants.

2 other initial tests :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll7xPdNPUZY

and RTR :

https://www.roadtrailrun.com/...ine-time-to-fly.html

Seems like :

when you midfoot strike, you don't feel the big heel, the shoe behave like a normal shoe
when you heel strike (flat section or downhill) it help soften the shocks

The RTR guys says they like it to run on the road (not only trails) especially if hilly.
So clearly not a performance shoe, but could help with big volume endurance training also on the road. Interesting.
