What do I do about this knucklehead ?
Almost every morning for the past month or so, when I go for a ride I pass this older guy doing speed walking on the bike path. There is a perfectly good, smooth and wide sidewalk on both sides of the street and a trail a bit further that parallels the road, but he chooses to walk on the bike path. Every time I catch up with him I yell "bike behind" and he moves to the right but I can say he is getting annoyed. I don't want to get into arguments with him about safety/appropriateness of him walking where he should not. Should I just keep yelling and see what happens? There is also a police station not too far and I often see cops around. Should I say something to them? Or would this entangle me into filing a report and an endless paperwork?
Thanks

"Bike behind" sounds kinda douchey; even if it is "proper" roadie-speak. That probably annoys him more than you riding up his ass

Go have a discussion with the police. Just do us a favor and film the conversation so we can see their reaction.

No advice but I did have a similar encounter recently where an oncoming runner insisted on staying on the line separating the bike lane from the traffic lane. Same situation, nice sidewalk which most oncoming runners jump onto or hug the curb. A few of us approached and we couldn't figure out what he intended as he stared right at us. He just yelled at us to 'stay in the bike lane' so he could split the bikes and cars. He was wildly unpredictable as some swerved left and right to miss him. Some people just have odd rationale about how things work/should work and it typically stems from ego or competitiveness inappropriate for the circumstance.

You beat me to it - but yes at any boat shop or off of Amazon. I'd probably duct tape it to the front in a total non aero style. Yes, I have considered this before.

OK, I'm trying to give the guy the benefit of doubt -- it is a problem for older people to see obstacles while walking -- especially speed walking. Bifocals (even if continuous) mean that the view to your feet is badly out of focus. So cracks in the sidewalk are nearly invisible and dangerous. And for some older folks, their biggest fear can be of falling. So that smooth bike lane can be enticing if the sidewalk has trip hazards. If this is his issue, he might be making a mistake because the bike lane might actually be more dangerous rather than less. He might be happy to talk if you slow down, get off your bike and walk beside him for a bit. You can share your fear of hurting him if you get forced by traffic his way and he could explain what his motivations are. You might also consider slowing way down when you pass him as a way to de-escalate.

Coupla reasons not to get bent.

He's an old guy and bikes go by fast, pedestrians don't, in the current world, he might think it's safer (Covid wise)
He's an old guy, give it another month,....:0(
He's an old guy, he thinks he's fast.

What's the fine?

As for the knucklehead...take a deep breath.

It is a 2 lane highway, the road can be busy in the morning.

He’s simultaneously posting in a thread about a biker who refuses to ride on the road and yells at him every morning while biking by on the walking path.
