Axel, you are correct about Kai when we are talking Ironman, but for ITU, I'd say it was Sheila Tormina. But the bottom line is that no one is coming from "single sport" and knocking the pants of the triathlon specialists. If I were a pro triathlete who has put my heart and soul into 15 years of training to "only go 8:35" I'd be somewhat insulted by the level of "trivialization" of the 8:30 bar. Again, this is 2 back to back 4:15 half Ironmans....when some of you jokers put down that time, come back and tell everyone that "anyone can do 8:30..."...until then, shut up, put down a realistic plan, train, perform and put your money where your collective mouths lie...the level of pie in the sky unrealistic posts on this thread is quite ridiculous. I bet the majority of these guys diminishing the accomplishment of 8:30 can't even break 10:30!!!...do you guys realize how long it took for Mark Allen to break 8:30?

As I told one of the athletes that I am working with....what you dream for in January and what you actually do in July are largely 2 different things...most people don't even come close because they aren't putting the work in and they have no clue how to get there...as Lance said, I win the Tour de France in January and Febuary while everyone else is just warming up....now that's a guy with a dream, goals, and meticulous planning and execution. The dreamers need to take a page out of his book so they can become doers. When I asked the original poster what his plans were for St. Croix, he quickly backed out and started giving excuses....doers don't give excuses...they just show up and deliver!

Maybe we need to start the "dreamer vs doer" thread...

PS....sorry if I sound cranky....it just occurs to me that there is a disjoint between the actual performances I see at races vs how studly people claim to be "or plan to be" here on ST.

Dev, most thought I was nuts to do over 21 hours of training 2 weeks ago. But I do have a dream for Sept. Smile

Thanks, that is exactly what I am saying. I am not trying to diminish 8:30, lord knows I have never had that type of talent. It does take talent, I am just saying there is a larger pool of that talent than we realize. 20 years ago you could have made the same argument and said there was only 5-10 guys in the world with 8:30 ability. But as the sport grows you will see more and more people with that ability. That is an absolute certainty. The sport is more competitive than ever and its only going to get deeper and more competitive in the future.

I don't see how I was being condescending or taking anything away from the achievements of those that actually HAVE gone 8:30. My opinion is that physical talent is only one limiter, of equal importance is desire, access to the sport and time.

One other question. Did I miss Simon Whitfield's IM debut?
