Had the whole family at my swim today, so had to stick to my hour, but what an hour it was. Bringing in 2022 with a theme, and a new record for distance in an hour too!

44x100's as 22swim@1;30(1;24 to 1;21, mostly ;22's)22x100p@1;20(all 1;15/16's)
4400SCY in 59;20

Happy new year!!!

And thanks to all the fishes for keeping me motivated this past year, biggest yardages in over 2 decades, 700k!!!

So based on Monty’s reminder/challenge, I took on The Brute (200 fly/400IM/1650). Did a warm up (300FR/200IM kick/300P) and felt decent plus had a full lane to myself.

The plan for 200 fly was long push offs and work the kick, stay smooth on the arms. Felt good and split a 3:06. The first 100 of the IM was rough and getting onto backstroke was huge relief. I split the 400IM in 6:12. Tried to stay “long and strong” on the 1650, but began to feel it after 800 yards. With 200 left, just looking to be done, as not much left to close strong; split was 24:00 for a total time of 33:18. Had done the Brute two years ago in 32:24, with most of the difference being in the 1650. Probably went out a bit too fast this year plus 2 years of aging (62 to 64) has its effect. All in, a good challenge and got me out of a bit of a swimming rut and provided some motivation for 2022. Happy New Year to fellow fish.

Hey nice job on the Brute swim, pretty tough to just do it on a whim without preparation. I totally lucked out and just hit some good feel days in a row, not sure why or how, but will take them. And your time should crush the 60-64 age group, so make sure and get entered by tomorrow.

And yes, that 300 fly is a real 1650 killer. I kept thinking just slow down, recover, then punch it at the end. No dice, and the hot water put any hope of that happening to rest in no time. But I may have just gotten motivated to finally attempt a 1650 race somewhere, dont think I have swam that in over 40+ years. Not sure why I have been so mile averse, because I love going long in the OW.. Thanks for playing, we would have a great swim together if we ever could get in the same pool at the same time, maybe Texas in April!!!

Finished 2021 with 640,000 (approx) total yards. Swimming was the most important reason I was able to do well in my 65-69 age up year.
Did a quick 1750 this morning and then off to a New Years Day 5K. Good start to the year.
(And, alas, I haven’t had a cinnamon crunch bagel in a lllooonnnggg time TC!😊)

Hey guys,

Those brute squad times are outstanding. I will give it a go in a few weeks. I only have so much time off work and now that my 25x400IM is over I want to XC ski. Just did a 11km run and 40km ski today. Once I am back to work will start swimming again...then again maybe I should swim while I can as we may go into an omicron shutdown any time soon.

Last year when I did the Brute I did it as 200m fly 1500 free 400IM as some people around here were doing it in that sequence. Is there a formal sequence ?

It is Fly, IM, then free. They set it up to be the most brutal, all the fly in a row, thus Brute!!!

Ya give it a go before you fall off the swimming wagon, you should be able to get a nice taper from that 10k of IM you just did...

Dammit. Only 3 swims this past week, and only 3 swims the week before.

Excuses include: A bad back (which is a lot better now), and omnifuck is getting me down - I seem to be expecting a shutdown, so the motivation is low.

But I'll try to do 5x next week.

I only swim.

Posting my last few December workouts here so as not to drag out the old thread:

Found a local-ish pool in Spring Hill, TN with open lap lanes. Half the pool was being used by a club team, so that was interesting to watch some teenagers swim.

12/23:
warmup, then on 1:20 base (+5s on the 50's)
4x200: 2:11-10-10-10
4x150: 1:36-35-35-35
4x100 1:02-03-02-03
4x50: all sub-30s
2x50 kick drill between each on 1:00
4x200 with paddles on 2:45, avg 2:09

4000scy total

12/27
warmup, then:
4 rounds of 600 + 2x100 kick. Rounds 1 and 2: 600 swim (7:09-7:01). Rounds 3 and 4: 2x300 with paddles and ankle band (3:28-27-26-26).
4x50 easy

4200scy total

back in Austin, outdoor pool getting a little too warm again

12/30:
warmup, then:

20x100 with fins in sets of 5
set 1: IM, even moderate, odd easy
set 2: free, even moderate, odd easy
set 3: fly-free-back-free-breast, stroke 100s moderate, free easy
set 4:free, same as set 2 (last 'moderate' 100 free was 54)
6x50 easy/cruise

3000scy total
+2.5hr hike

12/31:
4x50 25 sprint/25 easy
5x400 pull @pretty hard effort, last one with smaller paddles on 5:00 (4:07-06-06-07-10)
8x50 cruise

3300scy total
+5mi run

wanted to swim this morning but like everyone else in the US we had a cold snap, with sub-freezing temps, so my regular pool is closed for the morning. Back at it tomorrow.

I had an attitude adjustment:

Every swim is sacred.
Every swim is great.
If a swim gets wasted
I get quite irate.

I cannot control what omnifuck causes. So there's no point in stressing about it. The pool is still open. SWIM!!!

I had a lovely session this morning. And flipturns no longer feel wrong - my back is fine now.

Edit: I would also like to add that I'm very excited to be doing a new swim schedule. I want to do a 10-session cycle, twice per month. 20 sessions per month seems to be normal/happy for me. The 10-session cycle sees me focus on a certain distance on each session, in this order:

15m/50m/200m/800m/3000m/25m/100m/400m/1500m/5000m.

I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k)

So local pool out in palm desert was closed yesterday because of a power outage, then came back on too late for today too. I was so hoping for a nice cold pool(heaters out all night), but had to punt and go to a local pool with only 3 lanes. Got a lane, jumped in and almost puked. Water was 87/88, guess they use this one mostly for old people classes. But didn't want to miss again, so got in and did the minimum:

3x(3x100s@1;40/100 breast@2;00) swims- 1;23 to 1;17, breast-1;34/31/32)
300flutter/breast kick@6;00(5;31)
4x150p@2;15(1;52/50/47/46)
4x50 buoy@;55(40 to 36)4x50kick@1;05(55 to 53)5x50 buoy@1;00(39 to 35)
2700SCY in 50 minutes

Never thought I would long for my other hot pools, this one put them all in a new perspective for me..

very happy the power came back on and my normal hot pool was back in business, had it with the ultra hot one.. Decided to start backing down the yardage just a bit, and putting in some faster swims. Still in kind of distance mode, will shorten the swims later and pump up the times too:

15x200 as 5swim@3;10(2;48/43/39/36/31) 5pull@3;00(2;26/24/21/20/17)fast suit off/5odds kick@5;00/ evenIM@4;00--kikci(3;50/3;46/3;36)IM(2;54)broken@1;30(35.9/39/41/31.9--2;28)
5x100p@1;30 descend(1;16/14/14/12/09)
3500SCY in 61.30

man, that is a hot pool!!

Masters here brought back tue/thur at 10am swims, which is nice.

Monday swam solo
did 4K --- scy and did some 500+ yards of kicking w a board

Then jumped in yesterday to 4400 during a masters swim

Needless to say, after about 9 days totally off, it was a shock to the system.

8400 in two days. Nothing impressive at all.

Final set on day on was
10 x 100 on 1:20

And final set on day 2 was: 2 rounds of below trying to match pace throughout.
50 rest 5sec
100 rest 10sec
200 rest 15sec
400 rest 20sec

Nailed this to be 35, 110, 219, 4:41 on each round.

Not too bad and tougher than I thought

daved

Happy New Years FISHIES!!!

Well took a couple weeks off I guess. I did three workouts week before Xmas. Got the booster the Monday after Xmas and the shot stung and gave me a dead arm for a few days so I decided to take the week off and also short vacation for New Years. Went to casino for New Year’s Eve probably got omicron like the rest of America.

2900 on Tuesday night

5 200s pulling on 3:15
4 100s IM on 2:00, super slow oh well

Try a thurs and sat workouts to finish week

Atta Boy Tom!

Ok, this was day 3 of swimming this week and ... well, dayum, no wonder I was getting tired.

MyMainSet today

10 x
100 on 1:30 as 25free- 50 bk --25fr
125 on 1:30
75 on 1:30

The odd rounds were just make the interval and recover. The even rounds we were supposed to go super hard on the 75s.

I was able to hold 1:17-8 on the first 100s
The 125s on 1:30 were no joke, on the easier (odd) rounds I would go 126-7 and on the even rounds before the fast 75 I would 123-4s.
My 75s fast were all 47s-48s.

In my mind I was like, damn this is the hardest 2k set ever... turns out it was!! bc it was3K... got in 5300 today!

Total for first week of Jan (assuming I dont get back in) is 13,600 --- Ill take that!!! It wasnt all pretty, but thats a good week right there.

KEEP IT UP... (maybe I will sneak in this weekend)

daved
