Wellington NZ?
Quote | Reply
Hi all, my wife and I just got word there's a possibility we could relocate to Wellington in a year. We were both really excited about the possibility.

Can anyone give me any info? Tri clubs? Race series? Seems like most of the racing is on the south island.

Thanks!
Dan

Hey there, I'm in Wellington and there is great training available here.
As far as triathlon clubs go you have;
http://www.wgtntriathlon.org.nz/
http://www.pink.co.nz/huttmultisports/

There is also a lot of cycling activity around, check out;
http://www.wvcc.org.nz/
http://www.cyclewellington.com/
http://www.pnp.org.nz/index.html

There are a few swim squads around also including masters.

The cycling clubs have a lot of events on, but as far as Tris go there aren't so many. There has been a good Duathlon series over winter in Wellington.
During summer there are various shorter distance races in Wellington ranging up to std course. Longer distance races in the Nth Island are all in the top half of the island - Taupo, Tauranga, Auckland and Karapiro 1/2 Ironmans and of course IMNZ at Taupo. This isn't any drama as travel is pretty straightforward and the distances throughout the North Island are easily driveable. ~5hrs to Taupo.
There are also various multisport (involving kayaking) races on around most of the time that sometimes offer duathlon options for non kayakers.

Wellington is a great place, not too big as to be impersonal but it has all the facilities and activities of a larger city. There is a green belt with good hill running within 5 minutes of the CBD so lunchtime runs are easy or you could just run around the waterfront with the masses.

Its a great place to live - and we have the best coffee in the country too!
cheers
Mike

Yeah, in fact I hear they are inundated with people shifting there from all over the globe, beguiled only by the supreme nature of their espresso....

Honestly, I read this just the other day.

Well, I read the govt. is trying to get all the expats back into the country, citing the brain drain and that there are now lots of good jobs opening up, and all the long-stay OE bods should get their butts back home right quick. What's with that?! It's not the coffee, surely? Me, it'd be for Speights, but that's just me...... Family? Way down the list :-)

Cheers

I love the coffee, and the cafes for that matter, in Wellington!

I feel a holiday down south coming on ....

slightly off topic. I'm signed up for IM New Zealand and hope to spend two weeks in New Zealand. Other than Taupo, do you have any suggestions or where I should stay.

I love the town. Have not been their since ITU World's in 1994. Lots of wind...did I say wind...I mean WIND, great restaurants, lots of hills and good coffee shops. It would be a wonderful place to live for sure.
