Has anyone found reliable waterproof headphones for lap swimming? I am using the new waterproof iPod shuffle but the headphones they came with suck.

Get some H2O Audio (or other waterproof) earbuds, remove the rubber cushions that go in your ear and replace them with these ear plugs (same design, labeled under almost all major brands):http://www.amazon.com/...J2F8/ref=pd_sim_sg_2

The sound goes through them, even though they are closed at the end. They do a good job of keeping water out of the ear canal (since if any gets in you lose audio).

Has anyone found the water proof sound systems to be good enough to listen to podcasts or audiobooks? If so, which ones. It would make the solo pool sessions a lot easier to take.

See my above post.
I listen to podcasts on mine. Granted, I turn the volume all the way up. But still, it's good enough to hear clearly.

I use ones like these. They work just fine. Eventually the wires break from constant use, so I keep a spare pair ready to go. At less than $5 the price is right.

X-1 Audio / formerly H2O Audio

I'm a big fan of the Surge. I did product testing on this device. I destroy headphones and pool headphones quickly. The Surge has taken my abuse and is just fine.

I use a waterproofed shuffle (Swimman.com, but WaterFi and other make a similar product). With good earbuds, it's fine for podcasts. The plus side of a waterproofed shuffle is that you can use it for other workouts, travel, etc. and the sleek form factor remains. The downside is that they cost $$$$, but I've had mine since 2006 and beat the hell out of it (swim workouts, treadmill, plane flights, steamrooms, sauna, and thrown it into luggage, gym bags, transition bags, etc.) and it's still going.

The post you’re responding to is from 8 years ago. That accounts for why they are no longer stocked.

My ST feed yesterday was mysteriously showing pages from 2008. I’m glad it wasn’t just me who took a walk back in time 😉

Things have changed in 8 years. Today you want wireless earbuds. Plenty of them are waterproof. No they do not fall out while running. Typically. Order at a retailer with good return policy in case your ears shape makes the model you choose an ill-fit.

Edit: oh OP was asking about swimming? No idea then. But wireless will not work. Hah.
