This thread gets more racist by the minute...

It wasn't meant to be racist. Not even close. That comment by Helms (and I may be giving him credit for someone else's words) was actually about pornography.

I haven't even read through this whole thread, so I have no idea whether race has entered into it. I don't think it should.

Doesn't something smell here?

Maybe. Personally I am making no judgement of Bolt other than being astonished by his performance and wanting to believe what I see, but your thoughts on this are not alone - some of the most reputable and respected sports physiologists around, including Tim Noakes, are thinking the same thing. What about Ryan Hall? he celebrated for a whole half mile and nobody said boo.

I wouldn't say the undercurrent here is racist but it definitely exhibits all the signs of a generational gap. Some here still see the Olympics as an amateur sporting contest for the idle rich and their nice manners and attaboys...but a guy called Prefontaine and some others put an end to that and now we have riff raff and all sorts of neredowells sullying the fine traditions of the "movement" with their tasteless chest thumping and whooping and hollering.
Very well said.

Fair enough. Helms isn't the type of person I'd pick to support any argument though...

Stereotype much? I can't speak for others, but I really didn't care who won the 100m. On the whole, the sprinters rub me wrong. I don't care for their attitudes. That goes for white swimmer Hall too. As for the others you named - if they exhibit poor sportsmanship I don't want to watch them - American or not.

Ryder cup? I couldn't tell you who won, who played or much else about it.

As for the race - I might have pulled for Dix since he went to my alma-matre, but he acted like the others. Honestly, I was hoping to see Bolt win it in style - I only got half of what I was hoping for.

I saw your other thread before it was pulled. Disgusting. I'm sure USC is proud they turned out a classless moron like you.

You must have missed the part of the thread where people criticized how American athletes such as Maurice Greene acted in previous olympics. And I always rooted against Gary Hall Jr. in the swimming in previous olympics, because he was such an a$$.

Monty, generally I agree, but the records for the 100m is going to slow dramatically. There obviously is a limit and we have to be getting close with .01 second.

We expect different standards of behavior from different people of different ages in different situations.

BTW, attempts to characterize slowing down in a 100M race, turning sideways to face the crowd, and thumping his chest as sheer exuberance remain ridiculous.

And your attempts to dodge the Ryan Hall question are equally ridiculous.

Methinks you are giving Hall a free pass on his celebration even though it was much longer, less in the spur of the moment and more deliberate, because it was largely religious in nature and therefore it can't possibly be seen as in bad taste or showboating.

I thought it was a bit OTT myself, but like Bolt the guy had just blown away the field in the biggest race of his life so I'm not going to pass judgement.

Below is a summary of the world record progression since the advent of electronic timing. If anything, it looks like the progression is accelerating. It took 15 years to drop the record two one-hundredths from 9.95 to 9.93, but only 9 years to drop it a full tenth from 9.79 to 9.69.

9.95 -> 9.93 15 years
9.93 -> 9.90 8 years
9.90 -> 9.79 8 years
9.79 -> 9.69 9 years

Not meant to be directed toward you MattinSF, but the whole thread...

How about Yelena Isinbayeva. She started celebrating celebrating when she hadn't even hit the mat yet. I mean geez. Way to shove it in other people's faces that she's so much better.

Amid all the arguing about chest-thumping I haven't seen anyone mention the thing that really stood out to me. In a sport that's been plagued with drugs for decades, and presumably most WR's have been set 'under the influence', this guy comes out and destroys the WR, while pulling up in the last 20m. Riiiight. Doesn't something smell here? Perhaps he didn't want the world to see what he was really capable of, because clean runners shouldn't be capable of doing that?

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but did you watch the race? Bolt doesn't look like other sprinters who all seem to be 5'8" and broad. He looks like a guy that should be playing basketball or wide receiver. He is a genuine freak, a guy who is 6'5" and has incredibly fast leg turnover and a good start out of the blocks.

The 100M is not about finding the fastest guy in the world...or it hasn;t been until now. It has been about finding the guy who can get into 5th gear as fast as possible. Top end speed has always played second fiddle to acceleration which is why modern sprinters have been the stocky muscular types with fast leg turnover. 200m runners have the best top end speed and really are the fastest men in the world.

Along comes this goliath with long legs and amazing top end 200M speed but not only that, he can get to that 5th gear as fast as the little guys like Gay and Powell.

He might be using, I don't know, but if he is the freak that he appears to be then its entirely possible that hs is completely clean.

I don't know, I think a World Record is pretty stylish. Plus a Gold Medal pretty much goes with anything, you can dress it up and go formal or dress it down with a pair of jeans and it's still a Gold Medal with a World Record attached to it.

Nope, I saw those. I just don't think what Bolt did was in any way unsportsmanlike. He celebrated the biggest event of his running career (so far) with enthusiasm and passion, I dig that. My post was in response to some of the other comments in this thread.

The sprinters of Jamaica r doin good, curious what the 200 m. will bring and Usain Bolt better not used anything, except his brand new shoes, to win ...or else he's really fucked.

But really, i can see this video over and over again!

Winning by that far, that easily. I have to say it reminded me of Ben Johnson...

Certainly reminded me of Johnson.

Not even close. As Dev said this guy is a "genetic freak".

Fred.[/reply]
In the same way that Lance Armstrong is a genetic freak?

I truly hope this he's legitimate. But at the same time, I can't help but be skeptical. If Armstrong can be rightly questioned for, among other things, his consistent domination over a doped up peloton in the Tour, then an even more superhuman feat in a sport that is as, if not more, doped up has to raise questions.

Bolt's genetic freakism is obvious to the naked eye; he's a foot taller than the rest of the field and he gets out of the blocks just as fast as any of them.

Armstrong's genetic freakism is not so obvious.

I think this is a separate discussion, but what does his height have to do with anything?

I am trying hard to suspend my disbelief about all of the athletes and doping at the Olympics- Dara Torres, Bolt, and all the others. I do the same with Lance Armstrong. Until there's some actual evidence, I prefer to believe they're on the level. But Bolt's dominating performance does make one pause, and the fact that he can do that while literally standing head and shoulders above the rest of the field doesn't make for a convincing argument that he's clean.

I'm not saying he's doping, I'm just saying the argument seems flawed. With Phelps, just for instance, when you say he's a genetic freak, that's true- but his freakiness makes him the ideal swimmer- long arms, etc etc. Not so with Bolt.

see my post above.

Height plus leg speed equals higher top end speed, combine that with an explosive start and you have the perfect sprinter. Most modern sprinters are stocky muscular runners because the start and the acceleration phase is more important than top end speed. Bolt has changed that dynamic. He brings phenomenal 200m top end speed to the table along with 100m acceleration. No runner has ever had that sort of combination before.

Michael Johnson was tall and had great top end speed but his acceleration and start were average and he was never able to beat the pocket rocket types over 100m. Bolt can.
