Based on what you're asking for, I think you should reconsider your price range, as 100 or less a month is unrealistic for a well-qualified coach.

Just consider the following and how much time it will take:

1. Getting to know you, and your performance limiters.
2. Getting to know what strategies you have employed in the past and what strategies might work better in the future.
3. Getting to know your training habits, injuries, schedule, and resources available for training.
4. Analyzing power files and discussing them with you, via email, (or phone - add more time). (And multiple this by the number of rides you expect analyzed).
5. Nutritional help, be it during training and/or racing is a large can of worms, which you expect someone to teach you in a few simple emails. Not likely.
6. Creating a training plan, and modifying based on the data, and your feedback.

My simple estimate is about 15 hours for the first month, and 10 hours the following month. So I would ask, do you work for $10/hr or less?

I don't know anyone who is willing to do all that for 100 or less a month, and if they say they are, then they will quickly come to realize the amount of work entailed in the project, and realize they are not getting anything out of it. That is, if they do it well. If they don't do it well, then I guess you're getting what you're paying for.

Just my thoughts...

JimVance, I disagree with this. Mike Plumb coached me for about 1.5 years at $75/month. He knew me pretty darn well and I was faster (short course) than I've ever been. #4 on your list, don't know if Mike does this specifically, but my bet would be yes.

To the OP, Mike Ricci is also an option, but I think his "standard" coaching plan is out of your range. He did have a package that worked for me, and was affordable, and he is GREAT at email/communication.

To All: Wondering...why isnt Carmichael/trainright.com ever mentioned in the "i need a coach" posts? Anyone ever work with them? Pro/Con??? Seems a little pricey for the basic package, IMO.

I gotta agree.

I've been around for a while and done a few races (and coached a few-roughly 100-athletes)...

Coaching RELATIONSHIPS and athlete needs will vary. However, for ME, Marc has always guided me to my best performances.

I won't say that HRMs and Power don't have their place. They are fine tools for some athletes. However, for those of us who can over-analyze (leading to under-performance) or who simply don't want to spend $$$ on gadgets, "the Method" is pretty outstanding.

I wouldn't say that I'm "fast," but I did just complete my second fastest 1/2 Ironman ever last weekend on NO TAPER and NO GADGETS and grabbed a roll-down for Clearwater (not a major accomplishment, but a nice motivator for the end of the season).

Marc is very effective at clearly articulating complex concepts in easy-to-understand language. He's also good at calling B.S. when I need a kick in the butt.

Just one man's endorsement, but I think he's top-notch.

I think there must be a ton of people who know what they are doing. There's this guy, for instance:

http://www.lancewatson.com/

I'm gonna guess he knows what he's doing. The main man is not affordable to most of us, but I would assume his employees know what they are talking about ... When folks are considering paying the same per month for coaching as they pay for sustenance, this is getting a little crazy ... (Well, I am anyway. Considering, that is).

I too would agree with JimVance.

If a coach is capable of taking on athletes for under $100 then they most likely have hundreds of other athletes, meaning they will be spread pretty thin, or they are not a full time coach and most likely just doing it as a side project, thus potentially you won't get the attention and interest you are hoping for.

However, there are always exceptions but I would be wary of anyone who undersells them self too much.

Think of it this way. If you were looking to buy a BMW (or whatever kind of car you fancy) and a 2007 model was being sold for $2000 what would you think? Your first though would probably be "ok, what the hell is wrong with it". Coaching is very similar.

That said, you can also find the same lack of quality for $500+ a month.

Basically, just be sure you really do your homework and research who you are working with. Most (and my most I mean, the VAST MAJORITY) coaches, particularly in Triathlon are hugely unqualified and inexperienced. I would say close to 75% of current triathlon coaches have little more than 2 years of coaching and triathlon experience and little more education then USAT level 1 certification.

Just beware of who you deal with. As a coach I can tell you I have worked with and for some very VERY questionable people and organizations.

Good luck, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
