Tri Bike Input
ST. Relatively new tri guy looking to buy first bike. Due to budget I have been looking at previously owned and bikes on sale.

I have three in my sights -

  • Pre Owned - Orbea Ordu with HED tri spoke racing wheels
  • Pre Owned - S Works Transition TT all ultegra, mavic training wheels
  • New from LBS - Felt B16 stock
They are all in the $1800 to $2000 range.

I am 6'2 210 33.5 inseam.

Suggestions, input, opinions, etc. Thanks in advance.

My vote would be for the new Felt. You are getting a new carbon frame and a great bike overall IMO. One of my good friends has that bike and likes it. Ride it a season or two then look at investing in race wheels. Be sure to get a professional fit (should come free when you buy the bike).

Spend $200 on a fit. Drop your budget to accommodate if need be. Then look for the most aero that you can afford in the range that fits.

Add one more to the list.

LBS just put the QR Kilo on sale for $1600. Thoughts?

not a fan of orbea. I think the transition is an ugly bike, the frame just looks weird to me.

Provided they all fit, get a new Felt.

My advice:

Go get fitted and dial in exactly what bike works for you.

The Orbea seems to be the best bang for the buck - but it all depends on condition, age, etc.

Not to mention that those bikes are all a bit different ( assuming same size).

Plenty of deals to be had - you can get a brand new 105 Kestrel 4000 in that range. You can get your fit - get a Kestrel Talon and still have money left over for race wheels in that range too. Brand new Cannondale Slice 105 is in that range, as well as the B16 and higher end models that are clearance from previous years.

Get fitted and find out what bikes work for you and go with that.

Based on your height and inseam, get a Felt.
But of course, get a proper fit first.

Asthetically wise, get a bike that you like. No point buying a bike that fits that you hate. Not saying that get a bike that doesn't fit, but in addition to that make sure you are getting it be cause you really like it as well.

Thanks for all the feedback

I rode the felt today at my lbs and loved it.

Problem they only had a 56, need 58 according to fit expert.

Problem 2 can't find a 2012 b16 58. The 2013 is over my budget and I don't like the blue. Other shops won't ship.

I'll keep looking. Thanks for everyone's input.

If you travel (for work etc), the Bike Mart in Dallas/Frisco/Richardson has your bike ('12 Felt B16 58, white color) for $1850.
You could stop by, ask them to ship it if you don't want the hassle of lugging it around plane.

I found a great deal on a tri bike far from where I live, so my husband suggested we travel there for vacation and pick it up.
(Yes, he is a keeper)

I am not a fan of the no-ship policy, particularly for closeouts (indicating weak local market), double particularly for smaller vendors like Felt.
I would own a Felt road and/or cyclocross bike but for the no-ship policy.
Guess how many bikes my local dealer has in my size? Precisely zero.
Nope, not willing to pay MSRP on a bike I've never seen from a small brand.
Silly policy.
Rant over.

Totally agree. I have called every legit shop who list a b16 58 on their site and none will ship. I even tried to bribe a guy in Seatle with extra 100 and he would not do it. I'm headed to try a giant today and will probably skip the felt cause I can't get my size.

Felt cannot expect a lbs to carry every size.

Thanks for all the great input. I found a not so LBS about an hour away who was a Felt dealer and I am so glad I decided to make the drive.

I decided on the b16. The deal, service, support, and fit we're incredible and now found a new lbs.

Major kudos to the flying fish bike shop in south Tampa. They were amazing. Their attention to detail and customer service made me feel like I was spending 10k, but they knew my budget and kept me in it.

The felt will be a nice addition to my first HIM coming up in May.
