Trek 2011 Speed Concept and Flo question
Hi All,

Any Trek SC owners out there with Cargo box and Flo wheels? I recently took my bike to the Trek Toronto store to get my 60/90 Flo setup put on my 2011 Trek SC Ultegra for IMLP. First they couldn't accommodate the wheels with the cargo box. I was fine with that. Next they couldn't make adjustments to make the gears shift smoothly - this was a head scratcher for me. I went on the Flo Flickr photo gallery and there were several SC with a Flo setup. Is there something specific this Trek store is missing or is it lack of skill on the part of the mechanic. Any input is appreciated

Thanks!

Rob

did the wheel rub the bottom of the draft box? is that what you're referring to?

Yeah that's what the mechanic reported. He said it wouldn't work with the wheels. Given the profile of the Flos would Zipp FC not have similar issues? Not sure but I will investigate this further post Placid and hopefully have it sorted out for IM Florida

What size tire do you have on the rear wheel?

I've got a 2011 SC 7 with the cargo box and a set of Flo 60/90 with 23mm Michelin Pro4 and it has plenty of clearance. Are you sure you the box is tightened down? And is it the updated one? I thought the first round of the boxes had slippage issues.

I think the issue is a draft box issue - as said earlier, the first gen draft boxes were low relative to the wheel - the fixed version has wings on it to keep it from drooping and rubbing on the tire. I have a first gen SC 7 series with a Flo 90 on the rear with Conti GP 4000 23mm and have zero clearance issues.

others have covered all the bases...it's almost certainly not a wheel issue...tire width in conjunction with rim brand/model may exacerbate the issue, but the first thing to check is that you have the latest model draftbox and that it's clamped on correctly (as far up and tight to the seattube as possible). a couple pics in this post to help illustrate.

+1, the updated draft box solves all clearance issues, as for gearing never experienced any problems, front 60, rear 90 flows on my 2011 SC 9.5.

related question....anyone try and put 25's on this set up. don't think i can adjust the drop outs to allow more clearance because 25's rub.....conti gpsII of course.

Run, don't walk from the store... I have had very bad luck in the Toronto Trek store. Lack of product knowledge and skill. High school kids with BMX bikes show more smarts.
Try Gears, Endurosports, even Cycle Path across the street. They are all in the area

You can't fix stupid ..

The way the draft box is installed on the 2014 SC is so much better and thought out than the 2011 SC.

A 25mm 4000s (on a Flo disc) rubs the draft box of my 2011 7.0. Barely. I raced a 70.3 with that setup and it seemed like there was a bit clearance when I installed the tire, but after the race, there was rubber on the draft box.

Removed the box and have no clearance issues w/ the 25mm tire.

there is a hex/star nut buried at the bottom of the draft box. you need a super extra long wrench to get at it. but ge the wrench, and tighten the box down. It should hopefully solve the issue if you haven't already solved it from the other responders

Thanks everyone for the replies. A buddy of mine has lent me his Zipp 808s (older version). I used these before in Placid. There is a slight rub (I'm mean barely there) so I've decided to go without the box (tried tightening it as much as possible). I'm good to go! I will post a pic of the setup once I arrive in Placid so I can get all critiqued up slowtwitch style!

Cheers

Something is up if the draft box doesn't fit.

As far as shifting there was an update to the bottom bracket cable guide on the 2011's. Not sure if it was all of them, but I think it was. The piece can come loose and rotate a hair messing with the cables. I rode my bike thousands of miles like this so it can be ridden and shift ok, but once you get the new piece shifting will be rediculously perfect. Assuming it stays tight. Simply remove your brake cover to see if the bolt holding the BBCG is tight.

So definitely look into that bottom bracket cable guide. Of course I got this info from Carl right here on ST :)

So, If i buy this and put it on a 2013 SC, is it going to slide down and rub?

If you bought that exact version pictured...maybe, maybe not. It's the wrong picture for the product*. The actual gen1 draftbox in stock has wings (for lack of a better word) that grip the top of the seatstays which prevent the box from sliding down. Looks more like the one on the left in this pic: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...ost=3218921#p3218921

*thanks for posting...I'll shoot the content guys a note about the image error

Thank you! I thought it didn't look like what you all were talking about. Appreciate all your responses to questions, one of the decisions I decided to buy this one used was all the info you've provided about them
