Treadmill Service
My treadmill stropped working last week - I think it may need a new deck. I've tried contacting five treadmill service companies, and have not heard back from any. Is there any trick to this? I've called and left messages and also filled out online service request forms. Anyone in the Boston area have any suggestions?

You can also try contacting treadmilldoctor.com; they sell lots of decks and likely have one that you can install yourself.

Check youtube for installation videos. It's not hard, but mildly annoying only due to the length/size of the deck.

Talk to the manufacturer. I expect they have a list of authorized service professionals.

Did is shut down mid run?

I did that - none of them answered the phone and have responded to messages I've left.

Mid run it tripped a breaker. I reset the fuse box and the treadmill turned back on, but pressing START results in the treadmill almost resetting - as if it's just been turned on again. Someone on a Facebook group said the exact same thing happened at it was a cracked deck.

It's a True PS100 that is 6+ years old. Probably has at least 6-7k miles on it between my wife and I over that time span. I've lubed the deck/belt periodically, but no maintenance or service otherwise.

A worn deck and belt could cause it to turn off mid run. This is due to increased friction between the two of them, which causes the motor to work harder and the amp draw to increase.

If you just start it up and try to operate it without anyone on the machine, will it function properly?

No - the motor/belt won't start. When trying to start it it seems there is some sort of electrical issue and it resets as if just turned on.

He's got some good points. I'd buy some treadmill specific lube and lube your deck. Also, check for cracks. Lots of good videos on youtube. I know SOLE has lifetime warranty on their decks. Hopefully so does True.

Good luck.

Is it displaying an error code?

Have you tried a hard reset? Unplug the machine and let it stand for 5-10 minutes. There are capacitors on those motor control boards that will hold power. After resetting, see if you can turn on and run.

If that does not work, you could have a bigger problem. Has the machine been shutting off on your periodically in the past?

I would call True, likely their tech support will give you some advice. Some treads, I do not recall if True does, will go into a sort of lock out mode when they experience high amp draws. This is done to protect damage to the motor control board (MCB).

In any event, you will have to replace the belt and deck. Yes, both, they wear together. Hopefully the MCB is not damaged, that can get costly to repair.

I did fill out an online form for them today. They don’t serve my immediate area, but are an hour drive away. Hopefully they’ll get back.

I did speak to a local treadmill service place today and he guessed that it could cost $600-800 for parts and labor to replace belt and deck.

I do not see how a cracked deck could be causing this? Its not like there are sensors in the deck, and it was working fine prior to the surge...and you could always just look at the deck by removing or loosening the belt

It has to be an electrical problem...turn it off, holding a bunch of the buttons while its off to release the charge, and turn it back on would be my best advice

I’ll give that a shot, but not holding my breathe. Will check out the deck a bit more tomorrow.

Thanks for the video. Im not super savvy, but i imagine this is a control board issue, the power surge may have done something to the electronics. I wouldnt think itd be a problem with the belt, deck or physical structure since there would not be any sensors to detect damage. If it was the motor, im sure youd get some sort of error code instead of this irrational behavior. It looks like the software isnjust crashing and rebooting

You can order parts from treadmill part graveyards found online if need be. I did that for my old precor. Treadmill services charge a lot, and honestly treadmills are very simple machines, its just labor intensive to take apart and put together. Hope you get it fixed.

Nate, you need to pick up one of those Woodways that the gym around Boston was unloading 😀

Hard to believe this is a cracked deck. I just cracked my parents sole deck (<500 miles) and it was running fine despite some loud squeaking. Like everyone else said, this looks to be an electrical/electronics issue. Cycling the power and doing a hard reset (look in the manual) is where I Would start. Depending on how much you spent on this treadmill, it might just be time for a new one instead of putting any significant money to repairing it (but that’s just my opinion). Spend 500-700 bucks now, and maybe need to spend another 500-700 in a year or two. Both those repairs could have gone towards a new treadmill. But ymmv.

Good thing he gave that info ahead of time.
-Belts are about $200
-Cracked deck would likely be a warranty

As others have said, deck wouldn't lead to what is going on. It's an electrical issue based on something from the blown fuse. It probably can be reset or you might need a new motherboard (guessing).

If it's pretty expensive, I'd just buy a new unit. Get a sole of you got 1250 laying around. I'd rather buy brand new than pay 800 for a deck and belt. (Which doesn't seem to actually be the case)

I guess I'm leaning that way - towards getting a new treadmill. 6 1/2 years without any issues was a pretty good run. I'm currently leaning towards the Sole F85 for a new one. Probably slightly less robust than the True PS100 I've had, but seems to be pretty solid.

Google your local specialty fitness equipment dealer and they can recommend or may have their own service department
