Too much running for a 7.5 year old?

Long story short, grade 2 son's teacher typically makes his class do laps of the school before class starts. One lap = 500m and they get a Popsicle stick for each lap. On average he and his friends do about 2km ~ 3km. We have been keeping this up with him being at home for the past few months.

For May, his teacher announced a contest - the student with the most KM's for the month of May will get a prize. This has given him lots of motivation...May 1st we did 4km, and from May 2nd until now we've been doing 5km per day (weekends off). We take breaks along the way, and he probably walks about 20% of the 5km.

Is this too much? i'm certainly not pushing him, in fact he argues if i tell him i dont have time to do all 5km. Occasionally we split up the 5km into two 2.5km.

Once May is over he will be back to 2km i'm sure.

Is this too much running? Any concerns?

I probably ran that much every day while playing with friends when I was that age.

Kenyan kids run 15k to school. One way ;)

More seriously - my son is 9, he loves to run. Few days ago he woke up at 6am and did 15k on a threadmill. As long as he wants to do it and you are not pushing anything he will be allright. Also kids are light, their joints are flexible - if he is enjoying that you should be happy :))

I grew up in Fiji as an expat and we used to walk to school, only 2kms, I remember some of the local Fijian kids saying they used to run which impressed me (aged 8) then I found out they lived 10km away in a village halfway up a mountain. So 20km every day, 5 days a week, barefoot up and down a freaking mountain!

Kids will know when it is too much. My 8 year old (2nd grade) did A LOT of running since Covid shut things down. We got him setup on zwift and was running a ton. One week between his indoor and outdoor mileage he hit 28 miles! Most of the time he runs by himself through the neighborhood. I just tell him to take it easy if he is tired. He's also cycling pretty much non-stop. I don't push him at all. I also don't try to hold him back. I just tell him staying active is good and glad he enjoy's it. I asked him yesterday what his favorite video game was and he said "zwift"

I suspect there may be orthopaedic people on here or pediatrics specialists but when I was a kid we ran lots but not for extended periods like say 2 or 5km at one time non stop (unless someone was chasing). There may be some issues related to growth and maybe even things like Osgood Sclatter Syndrome which our son who was in short track speed skating developed. So there may be some things to be concerned for but probably these are far less of a concern than the couch potato issues on the other side so if they are self motivated I think they probably will self regulate but that advice seems to have been given to them already from what is said in the post so probably nothing to worry about but maybe something to be aware of?

Ditto what the others have said. As long as he is driving it then let him go. On a related note, we recently got a doberman puppy so I've been doing research on when we can run with her. The concern is the growth plates. Too much running will destroy the growth plates and lead to permanent injury. However, the answer is not to limit her running but to put her in charge of it. She is allowed to run herself to exhaustion any time she wants but we can't run with her on a leash until she is 1.5 years old when the growth plates have closed up.

I would assume that there are similar concerns with any new runner, no matter the age. Forcing them to go a certain distance/speed/duration is guaranteed tendonitis and other problems.

On a more humbling note, I came across a warning to not let your adult doberman run more than 90 miles per day no matter how much they want to!

Let kids be kids, they will self-regulate. I’m not clear on how “too much running“ will damage growth plates. The body at any age has a remarkable ability to adjust and compensate.

As others have said, this is the right answer.

What's too much? When it isn't fun anymore. As long as it's fun, it's not too much. If you start making it no fun anymore, it won't stick.

Keep it fun, that's all you need to worry about.
