Tiagra > 105 upgrade - rear derailleur hanger
Quote | Reply
Hello!

I'm upgrading my old Giant Defy 2 (2011) from Tiagra to 105 and I need a new rear derailleur hanger. I tried to remove the one I have from the the old derailleur but I can't get it off, which is fine because my new components are all black. But now I can't find a hanger that fits my bike in black.

I found the same one I have and the description confirms it's compatible with Defy (alloy) - 2009-2011: https://www.performancebike.com/...022010-27028/p331446
I found a black one that is compatible with the Defy Advanced - 2009-2011: https://www.performancebike.com/...005-270131/p331448?1 Can't find a lot of details about the Defy Advanced 2011 but it looks pretty similar to mine, except the better components. Do you think it's compatible? Or should I go with the silver one and it is what it is?
Thanks

Put some release oil such as PB Blaster on the derailleur bolt, then remount it to frame, and crank the bolt loose. No need for a new hanger. If you don’t like the color just spray paint that one.

The defy advanced one will definitely not work, they're different shapes. You can go silver, but with some penetrating oil I suspect you'll be able to get the old one off. When you install your new derailleur, put a little grease on the threads when installing it to prevent this from happening again.

Thank you! I will try that tonight.

I think I found one in black on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/...o1graCSRg05aFYjG6wfc

I will pull the trigger since it's only $13. Worst case scenario, I use the one I have and spray paint it. :)

Give us a picture of the bike.

I'm pretty good at finding hangers. At first glance it looks like you got the right one but without a picture of the bike to positively identify it, it'll be nothing more than a guess for me.

That LOOKS like Hanger 20:

There are a number of different Defy hanger styles, so recommend trying to more precisely verify which Defy you have if possible.

I'd also recommend having the rear wheel clamped in the dropouts when you do this. Some hangers will bend forward if you really have to crank on the derailleur bolt...
