The 70.3 New Orleans thread
Maybe we can get some more updates from the course. The updates on ironman.com are quite sparse.

Hmmm, I wonder who updated this:

"Bike Course - Men at 30 Miles

#2 - Chris Leito -
#5 - TJ Tollakson - 11 seconds down
#1 - Chris McCormack - 1:20 down
#10 - Brent McMahon - 1:39 down
#9 - Tim O'Donnell - 3:20 down

Wind has picked up to about 15 miles per house. Cloud cover is still keeping air temps in the low 70's - Sun is trying to shine and it looks like it will be out by the time the pros get on the run course.

Volunteers report that most of the pro men are asking for Gatorade at mile 30. Gatorade Orange Endurance is on the bike course for the 3,000 athletes."

I am definitely changing my bike course nutrition to Gatorade Endurance now!

Did anybody notice Cait Snows run time? She averaged 6:15's and slowly gained on the leaders. Almost running down Zeigar. If this girl can build some strength on the bike, she will be a force in the coming years. Thats one fast run split.

Every morning a gazelle wakes up knowing, it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed...
Every morning a lion wakes up knowing it must outwit and outrun (at least) the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death...
It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up, you'd better start running.

Some observations:

Macca had blood smeared across half his face at mile 2 of the run. Not sure what that is all about. But having seen him in person, the guy is huge. If he's under 180 I'll think he bends light or something. The guy is gigantic. The other pros are not too small either but they do have some bizarre skinny waists.

2nd pro female out of T2 collapsed at mile 1.

The swim was warm and the water was calm. It was very humid for the bike though.

he had that blood on him after t1 also. i think he had a crash or something in transition, because he was one of the first out of the water, but probably like 15th out of t1.

Volunteers report that most of the pro men are asking for Gatorade at mile 30.

Smart - why carry 5 - 10 pounds of water or some other beverage around the course when they are handing it out for you every 10 - 20 miles!

I am trying to signup for the 2010 event. Active.com requires a password on the registration page (I'm already logged in). What is that pw? Is this something for 2009 participants?

Funny your jumping to sign up! I have heard some not so nice things about this race and venue. Logistics are supposedly horrible and the venue itself I have heard is very dirty. California half would be a better choice in my book!

I agree about LVL -- great race!!! I'm wondering if Ironmanlive was confusing Luc all day with Tollikson. Luc has the #1 swim, #6 bike, and #4 run -- obviously in the mix all day... but his name isn't even mentioned until the final results. Tollikson is all over the "leaderboard" and he ends up something like 14th, probably never cracking the top-10 by much, if any? It seems like a case of mistaken identity.

Their numbers were 5 (Tollikson) and 8 (LVL) so I guess a spotter could get confused with them going by on the bike, but coming out of the swim? Or on the half-marathon?

Edit: My mistake -- Tollikson was #4 after the bike, so he obviously had a great ride and was putting the pressure on!

Oh well, great race for Luc!

I cannot comment on the actual racing part of it...but from a spectator/supporter's perspective...the race is amazing. The atmosphere is...well...it's New Orleans...it's a blast. All the athlete's are smiling and all of the spectators are partying...the finish line looks like the TDF. 5 deep w/fans. Great race from the outside looking in...IMO.

I am familiar with this venue, I love New Orleans way more than any area/city in Cali (although I love Cali, too, I like Nola more), there is ample hotel space, the event is early in the season, the course is fine, the weather is usually warm at this time of year, and the logistical problems that were experienced in this inaugural year are probably going to be attacked and eliminated by the race director, who is very good. So yeah, I'm jumping on this one for next year.

But I have no idea what is wrong with the registration process? I really don't like using Active.com.

Registration for IM 70.3 New Orleans 2010 is open ONLY for athletes that raced this year and were given a code. Registration for all others will open sometime late this week.

Registration is still open for 2009 IM Kansas 70.3 and IM Steelhead 70.3! :)

The spotter volunteers were GREAT today! (Aid Station Captains). I instructed them via radio on "How to spot" the top five men and women making sure they got the race numbers and used a watch to get the "time back from the leader" Most of the time they were right on - I was sure double check with them when Natasha showed up in the top five on the bike and also when #10 passed #1 on the run course!! They did not know the names of the athletes, but they did a great job with the numbers and time splits!
