That was then, this is now....(pictures!).

My tri bike in 1986 Ironman Hawaii:

And my new one I just finished, amazing how far we've come:

The stuff us age groupers use now is way better than what the pros had in 1986 or even 1996.

Tom, what size is the small chain ring on the Colnago? It doesn't seem much smaller than the big ring.

Oh, I thought it looked bigger than that. Lovely looking bike, nice piece of classic Italian design.

Did you manage to get through to Anne?

Hey Tom,
I have a question about the bike stand holding your Cervelo P3SL. Is your bike loose in there or is it firm? I believe I have one very similar and my road bike is a little loose and leans on one side. It still holds and supports the bike but I wondered if it should be a tighter fit. How tight is the P3 in there?
Thanks,
Sheridan

Huh?! The stuff age groupers use now is the same or better than what the pros use now! There is very little to no "unobtanium" used by 99% of the pros now... you can ride exactly what Stadler or Kraft rides, for example. As a matter of fact... don't you advertise that on Ebay with your Kuota?

That Colnago is a thing of beauty!!!!

Kinda like a 68 Camero -- or a 70 corvette -- sure there are faster out there -- but there are none with more class.

Thanks for posting the pics.

They made nice cars then. My cousin owned a 70 Vette with a 427. He sold it to buy a pick up truck when he got married. He still kicks himself today. I owned a lot of the British stuff - Triumph TR4, Spitfire, TR8, MGB, MG Midget, Mini-Cooper, etc. My favorite though was my two Porsche 356B's. Those and the early 911's were the real deal with air cooled rear engines. Not like the pretenders on steroids that the company makes today!

In many cases the stuff the age groupers were using in 2004 was better than stuff the pros are using in 2004.

Tom,

That Colnago bike has COMPACT CRANKS!

Ever the innovator, you were using the Victory cranks Campag had w/ the 116mm BCD.

You could have gone 50t/36t on that bike.

Tom - truly not trying to be a smart%$$...

As someone who happens to think equipment is vastly overrated (me), have your ironman bike splits changed significantly between 'then' and 'now'?
