I think dismounting without shoes is safer too. I worked the mount/dismount line at a race last year where the surface was asphalt. For people stepping off in shoes it was like stepping onto ice. About 10 people wiped out. It was worst for those who tried to dismount without coming to a complete stop. The momentum they wanted to carry into T2, like their barefooted brothers, made their dismounts more treacherous.

I actually wrote about this in my race report on my training blog:

It definitely helps a lot. I usually have a slower T2 if I don't have speed laces and have to tie my shoes, but in this last race, I passed at least 2 people clopping around in bike shoes just on the short stretch to the T area. This technique definitely works if you do it properly.

I do technique #2. Some of the problems that I found with #1 is that it's really easy to get your right foot to the left of your left foot so that your legs are crossed and that could lead to disaster. I tried doing #1 but #2 felt a lot more natural for me.

I'd argue a "flying dismount" is much safer than the slam on the breaks, unclip, straddle, climb over and run with the bike in cycling shoes method. I've seen many a collision at the dismount line with people standing still. All I will say is that Transitions are the 4th sport of traithlon, it's good to do some Run-bike-run type bricks to practice your mount/dismount and to train yourself to get rid of the funky legs syndrome.

I don't know why I had jelly legs going into T2. I've been doing bricks lately. I guess it was because I went really hard for 28 miles and then ran where my bricks are usually easy for the last 10 miles before the brick.

Easy isn't synonymous when it comes to the bricks we tend to do. I do transition runs after long rides, but when i do bricks, I typically do them hard and fast. Our usual format is 1.1km run-5.2km bike-1.1km run they teach you high speed transitions, and how to get rid of funky legs in a hurry. Typically I'll do 2-3 repeats (5-10min rest, usually 5min off the slowest finisher), depending on how everyone is feeling.
