I think you are confusing fitness ( endurance) with function. This virus causes damage at the cellular level and acute lung injury. If your lungs are damaged from other diseases then you are more likely to have trouble.
Your fitness will help you recover Faster provided you are not sick for too long but I’m not sure that swimmers lungs fair any better than a Normal set of unexercised lungs when damaged at that level.

Apparently Cameron Van den burgh (gold medalist / world champion /former world record holder) came down with it and he said it was absolutely awful. If it’s better with his fitness level, then the rest of us chumps who contract it are screwed...
