This is stabbing pain directly behind the left kneecap. (Not pain on the side, that's ITB friction--I've got that on the right side). It bring me to a halt.

It could be a number of things. Here is a good article that explains some of the more common conditions involving the knee cap. Read it first and then get back to us.
It 's impossible to diagnosis over the net, but it's probably along the line of what is described in the article.
How long has this been a problem? What seems to aggravate it?
