Shaq

There's been stories going around lately of Shaq in a pool, Shaq looking at bikes, etc. The questions was asked if he is next year's Kona celebrity.

Well, a picture was just released of last night's IM premier panel all standing with Shaq.

Good thing free throws aren't one of the sports, he would DNF if that were the case.

i thought Shaq had bad knees. i'm sure a full year of IM training wont hurt those. he can go bike shopping with Bill Walton

Let's be honest, given his sheer size and mass, he is going to really struggle in the heat. Shaq will be walking the marathon no doubt. It will take a while but he can get it done. I seem to remember something about him swimming before and he seemed to make some impressive gains on the swim. He should be able to bike great too. My guess is the walking and weight loss will cause an overall improvement is his health and knees for that matter.

Shaq vs Phelps :)

With minimal time in the pool he actually has pretty damn good mechanics. At 7'2" and with a lot of upper body strength, it wouldn't take much to turn him into a 1:30/100m cruiser. Heck, he could probably get a lot faster than that.

He used to live not far from me and I'd see him ride his bike from time to time through the neighborhood on weekends. It was the biggest mountain bike I've ever seen but it looked absolutely tiny under Shaq. I have to say, the last time I saw him (~1 year ago) he was in pretty damn good shape. Usually guys go downhill quick once they are out of the NBA.

There is a cut off time at Kona, right?

My guess is that Shaq could train for a whole year, lose 100lbs- and still not make the cut off.

Every year the marketing department of some college basketball team claims "the whole team ran a sub 5:30 mile. "(No-doubt it is an "official" 1185m mile).

It would he harder to jerry rig a "marketing friendly" Ironman completion.

Maybe Shaw is hoping the NBA will pay him not to attempt it.

I usually resent the celebrity slot-taker (loved how Dave Mira refused that opportunity), but this would be really cool. It would definitely register in popular consciousness.

Do it, Shaq.

i'd love to see shaq do it. im not at all a basketball fan but he's a good guy, very happy around fans, etc. i bet he would have a great time out there. i like the celebrity entry, i just think it would be great to keep it to athletes. apollo ohno did great. i'm talking about ex football, baseball, hockey, etc.... like Hines Ward. i know former NHL Goalie Mike Richter did IMLP a few years back, but getting on the Kona stage would be awesome.

A friend of mine toured the original Cannondale factory in PA back in the 90's. When he was there they were building a custom road bike for Shaq with a second down tube like a tandem. Cycling isn't new to him. I would love to see it.

21 years ago a former pro football player named Darryl Haley ( 6'6", 325 lbs) finished Kona. He was riding a Softride beam bike. http://www.darrylhaleybnb.net/aboutdarryl.php
Shaq is taller and wider, but equipment and nutrition are much improved (do they make Hokas that big?). There's also a wealth of knowledge available about training and recovery. Yeah, the guy still has to do the race, but I think he's got a better chance at finishing an Ironman than of winning Dancing with the Stars.

I worked with an EP/Cardiologist who was responsible for Bruce protocol testing of the Bulls. You would surprised just how cardiovascularly capable these athletes are. Now how well that would translate to say marathon speed is another question. Regardless I think Shaq can slog the marathon and get it done no problem.

I am pretty sure this had nothing to do with IM and the premier last night. More to do with the fact that Turia, Heather, Timothy, & Rinny all happened to be at the AOL Build "thing" (I had never heard about it till today), and Shaq just happened to be on the show after them..........

http://build.aol.com/

I hadn't seen anything about him being at the actual premier last night........

This might be cool to follow f'sure, but if he had his hands full with the Miami Heat then the heat of Kona will be a bit tougher!

Shaq is known as "The Man of Steel" that's pretty close to an Ironman.

I don't ride with power and think there is way too much talk on ST about watts but I'm wondering what kinda of watts Shaq could put out if he trained serious for a few months?
No had more power on the basketball court than Shaq.
