September Fish Tales
Welcome to September, my fellow fishies.
Today I swam at Corona Del Mar beach. A bit breezy and therefore choppy and with just a hint of the hurricane waves lingering. Temperature must have been 75 or more - quite warm. With that, I swam four loops or about 4000 yards. So much nicer than a pool!

Sounds glorious. My pool is closed for the week for annual maintenance, I may have to brave some Canadian ocean.

I was just there. Didn't get in the water though, except to wade in at the beach :)

Do you swim masters at all? I know there are a group of islanders who come down to us for meets.

I used to swim with the Masters group here but the practice schedule really didn't work well for me (late evenings). I've gone to a couple of meets in Halifax but last one was Feb 2013 I think? I'd like to try to get to a couple this winter as well.

Yesterday-9/1

Group met at a local lake. Most people swam an out and back loop a few times. Since I'm hoping to race junior elite cup races next year, coach had me swim 1 loop to get warm ~1500yards then do some sprints to a buoy from a dive off the dock.

About 2300 yards for the day!

No swim today, first day of senior year, ran an easy 5.5 miles before school and I'm doing an 80' power workout on the bike after school.

Pool's closed for it's annual shutdown. Good thing it is Tri-Night practice tonight. I'll take this as a forced taper for my ONE and ONLY (Olympic length) Triathlon of the year this Saturday. I am hoping I'll be able to remember how to run. :-)

Ended up August with most mileage ever.

A little behind them times, TC. This is September... we're done with ladders! :p

Another ocean swim. The water seemed even warmer, but the surf was a bit rougher and the bottom has been all carved out by the last week's storm surf. I told the group to forget about dolphin leaping in as they're likely to go head first into a sandbar. It made for interesting exits, too, as the the steep beach and first big trench caused for some large backwash waves. In fact, coming in one time, I was catching a wave when the backwash hit, sending me into the air where I summersaulted. Great fun!

about 2800 OW Yardages

I swam a 1200M pool warmup and drove to the Townelake Triathlon

According to Garmin I Swam 1565 meters in 19:20 - approximately 30 extra meters due to a sighting error - but it didn't matter because I still had my first overall triathlon win!

Hey, congrats!!

I got in for 2400 or so tonight, trying to work on some stuff to improve my stroke (maybe??). Anyhow, lady a couple of lanes over from mine let her 4 year old steal my pullbuoy. Grrrr. Next time I see that kid I'm totally gonna swat his ice cream out of his hand just before he takes the first bite. That'll teach him :-|

Nice work, aj!

Say, these primes you speak of... How often do they do RD's do primes? (I've never heard of primes for the S/B/R in any of the triathlons around here, and oh lord a swim prime is all I could ever hope for. :-) )

Last night did 1500m of OWS in a very looooow river. There was some sludge running involved.

We have one race nearby that has primes - $50 for top overall swim, bike and run for women and men. I got the swim prime this year.

I have won a prime 4 times. All from OnUrMark race company in Houston - they pay them at all their races. It is a cool thing to do.

The other cool thing was the race had a beach start. I'd love to do that more often.

Awesome - congrats on your overall win!

Back to the pool this AM:
4x[200s+50k] 2:27/:24/:21/:18
10x50 various kicks nonstop
5x100@1:20 1:08/:10/:10/:11/:07
200 s/k cool

2200 sc yardages

Pacific Coast Triathlon is this weekend. The water is so warm, I'm thinking of no wetsuit. I know I'll be slower without, but I don't care. I did it one time before without a wetsuit and the water was way colder than I thought it would be. This time It should be mid-70s (24-25°C). Oh how I wish it would warm up more to become a no-wetsuit swim. (I think I wish that every year!)

Agreed! Well done.

I am in the same quandary... the water temp for this weekend's Oly is 72. It's typically around 1,100m (vs. 1500 Oly distance) and a little downstream... so for me last year it was a 13 min swim. How much time would I make up, or lose without a wetsuit? I enjoyed coming out of the water 2:30 ahead of everyone - looks good on film, but... Hmm.... faster transition...

I will never play this game again. Wear (edit: I originally wrote where!) a wetsuit. It is faster. For everyone.

Lunch swim:

3800 scm in 55:00

400 on 5:30
8 x 100 done 75 swim / 25 kick on 1:35
1:00 break
4 x 600's on 8:00 -> 7:40 / :37 / :37 / :37
4 x 50's kick / swim on 1:00

I love swimming right after a shave down.

Congratulations on the OA win!

My between run/rides swim yesterday - barely enough time to get warmed up and swim a set and still got home 20 minutes late...work keeps interfering with hobby,
4.5 mi run

8 mi bike to pool
500 wu
6 x 200 @3:00 desc x3 (2:43 - 2:39)
