I did a set today that I've wanted to do for awhile. The only thing stopping me was the ascending part, as I usually prefer descending distance and speed. This seems like it could be a great prep for the 3000tt you are doing. I stole the MS from Mark Warkentin, he did this in his final prep for the Beijing 10k OWS.
200 sw
200 paddles
100 bk
100 k
4x50 dr/sw
All on a 1:40/100 base...
50 steady, 50 strong (:39, :37)
100 steady, 100 strong (1:26, 1:22)
200 steady, 200 strong (2:58, 2:48)
400 steady, 400 strong (5:57, 5:44)
800 easy, 800 strong (12:15, 11:40) The first 800 was where I was really starting to feel it, why it ended up being a slower "easy"
100 easy
4000scy
This was Warkentin's:
50 Ez 50 Strong – 29
100 Ez 100 Strong – 1:00
200 Ez 200 Almost Fast 2:02
400 Ez 400 Fast 4:07
800 Ez 800 Fast 8:28
Here is a quote from Warkentin's blog from pre Beijing that I know you will love Monty...

Report from the pool. Training is going fine. I had two bad practices in a row so I decided to go back to the training tool that got me here – pulling. I love pulling sets with a passion, and I would have quit this sport a long time ago if it weren’t for paddles and a pull buoy. (Pulling, for those of you lost right now, builds upper-body strength in the water and is really much more enjoyable than swimming.)
And for fun here is a pulling set he did in the last few weeks before Beijing...

The prep for my race is going well. I did a pulling set yesterday:
1000 went 10:49
10 seconds rest
2000 went 21:15
20 seconds rest
3000 went 31:14 (last 1500 was a 15:32)
