S/B/R Orgs that benefit minority populations
Quote | Reply
This was originally going to be a front page story, but I would rather crowd source and discuss a variety of organizations. (Note: we’re going to wind up doing a lot of pieces off of leads from this thread. Keep those organizations and ideas coming.)

Let me be very clear up front: any "all lives matter" stuff is going to get pulled, and you'll probably earn a time out from me. Want to have that discussion? Visit the Lavender Room.

With that in mind, here's some organizations that, if you feel so inclined, can help within our vertical:

Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling, Philadelphia: https://bicyclecoalition.org/members/
This youth group frequently staffs the bike aid station at Steve del Monte's AC 70.3. There's 115 members, majority youth of color and low income -- yet they kick ass at biking, taking on everything from tri to cyclocross and advocating for more kids on bikes.

Black Girls Do Bike: https://www.blackgirlsdobike.com/home

Feel free to add to this thread. Those that get vetted will get added back to this original post.

Thanks for doing this. Where I live in Canada, I can't think of any organization that is in place to encourage minorities in triathlon, running, cycling or swimming. Minorities either do it thru normal channels or not at all. Largely very few minorities are in this sport. I have been racing since 1985. The race scene in all of the endurace sport looks somewhat the same in 2020 as 1985.

Also in the Philly area, for folks who may have bikes or gear they'd like to donate, Neighborhood Bike Works takes donations and runs an earn-a-bike program (kids take a class to learn how to repair and maintain a bike, and get to keep the bike when they finish the program):
https://neighborhoodbikeworks.org/youth-programs

They also have an after school youth ride club and have been doing a bikes-for-neighbors program to provide free bikes for essential workers and people who need to get around on public (which had been running on greatly reduced schedule).

I think you are better off just doing your front page story which would be worthwhile. The forum likely does not have that many minorities in it so no one with any stake will notice this thread. If you put it on the front page, it might be more widely communicated to minorities outside the forum who care about this topic and can add to it in the comments section on the front page.

I've been racking my brain trying to think of local organizations that are specific to helping minority populations. I think the reality is that I'm uninformed, and I'd love to know how I can get involved in my community (like you said) within our vertical. I do know that Running for a Better Oakland has a significant presence in town.

there are probably lots of organizations like El Grupo

https://www.elgrupocycling.org/

that are not specifically designed to benefit only minority populations but they do so anyway. take a look through most/many NICA teams and there will probably be groups with ethos similar to EG.

Exceeding Expectations - http://www.eefoundation.org
It's focus is Latinx youth in the San Berndino area - - gets kids into triathlon as way to get them to graduate high school and college.
Founded and sustained by Ironman famous Cherie Gruenfeld (13x Ironman World Champion, and going after the title again at age 76? for Feb. 2021).
It's a fantastic organization that has been very successful. Many pro triathletes support them.

Hampton University is the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to start a varsity women's triathlon team.

BlackGirlsRun.com -- they have some members also doing triathlon who have blogged about it on their site.

TriLation.com -- - based in NYC to increase participation of Latinos in triathlon.

I assume by "minority populations" you mean organizations that benefit people of color? If it is the latter, then for inclusive/asset-based language, say that. (or say people of the majority, since actually, whites are the statistical minority in the world).

If you mean people of color AND other historically marginalized populations, then you could include the Federation of Gay Games which includes triathlon, and Front Runners, which is a national gay running organization and a large percentage participate in triathlon. Here's the NYC website, but it is national. https://frny.org/

I personally think given the times, to stick with the people of color organizations.

Why not a front page article? There's for sure enough resources to warrant a full piece. The piece then could also serve as a long standing valuable resource for the tri community as sources to draw from to ensure editorial boards, race committees, triathlon governing boards are representative, and also as sources for triathlon related businesses to ensure their staff (employees and independent contractors) and participants are representative as well.

I'd pulled the HBCUs, thanks.

And yes, intended POCs. Totally get what you were saying.

In conversations with Dan, I think we want to go much deeper on this than I originally intended. Keep these orgs coming.

OK. This is all I could find. If I see anything else, I will let you know. I searched Black and then African American swimming, swimmers, runners, triathletes; then Latino then Hispanic same; then Native American same.

https://blackkidsswim.com/
Black Swimming Association (UK). Good interview of founder here: https://swimswam.com/...wimming-association/

International Association of Black Triathletes - https://www.theiabt.com/

Black Cyclists Network – couldn’t find website, but did find Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/...clistsnetwork/?hl=en

http://www.project562.com/...fety-and-solidarity/ - - not sport specific, but included this post.

Running Strong for Native American Youth: https://indianyouth.org/...-we-do/our-programs/
Not sport specific, but founded by Billy Mills, Native American Olympian in the 10K

Kwe Pak - - Native American Women Runners. They have a facebook page, not website. good article here. https://psmag.com/...evolution-by-running

I also just checked the same kind of search for Asian, Pacific Islander, and Hmong related organizations and didn't find anything additional.

Two I know of in Boston:

Sole train: "Sole Train is a community building and mentoring program that uses running as a vehicle for setting and achieving seemingly impossible goals." https://trinityconnects.org/mission-vision-values/

Bikes not Bombs: "Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. We reclaim thousands of bicycles each year. We create local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation. Our programs mobilize youth and adults to be leaders in community transformation." https://bikesnotbombs.org/about [also a solid LBS!]

There's also Rashaan Bahati's Foundation, he's a former Pro Cyclist (and a lethal crit sprinter, some big wins on the USPRO circuit) https://www.bahatifoundation.org/ If you frequent zwift, you occasionally might see him ripping around... I've had him blow by me a few times.... It's cycling specific rather than Tri specific.

Thanks for sending this along.

The more I get into this, the more I realize that we've got a lot of potential stories to work on. This is going to be a lot more than just one piece.

You might also reach out to Max Fennell, https://www.facebook.com/maxfennell or Www.MaxFennell.net
Max is a black Professional triathlete. I believe he was originally from Philadelphia, and is now in Menlo Park, CA. At some tris he has raced in Chicago, NY and Philly he has worked with some organizations for Kids of Color (is that a term?)

Max is a great guy, and my guess is he would be happy to talk!

I know (well, casually anyways) Max from my Rev3 days. Definitely someone to talk to.

Not triathlon, but BIKESyracuse has been around since 2006. In the past they have come to the local cyclocross races with 20-25 kids sometimes! These days they seem to primarily do the NICA stuff since that has grown quite a bit in central NY.
