Road vs Tri bike

We see this question asked quite often - which is faster on a certain course??

Well....unfortunately I got to test out my road bike yesterday in a half. Earlier in the week my right rear shifter (SRAM R2C) began have some issues. I had it looked at, but a washer was broken and it couldn't be fixed for the race. As a result, I ended up racing on my CAAD 10 road bike with a HED 9 front and HED Jet disc on the rear - looked kind of cool. I ended up having the fastest bike split by a bit over 90 seconds, but the course was pretty hilly (Quassy) with close to 4000 ft of climbing. My bike time was 2:28 and BBS predicted around 2:21 with the tri bike.

Does around seven minutes sound about accurate due to the change in position and the frame? The one thing I noticed riding the road bike was that my triceps hurt like hell trying to stay in the drops whenever possible to get aero. I tried to find some clip on aero bars, but couldn't get any.

My experience says that my road bike is much faster on climbs of any consequence -- and the steeper it is, the faster the road bike is, relative to the Tri bike. Everywhere else, my Tri bike is much faster.

On most Tri courses around here (which are relatively flat), the Tri bike comes out ahead by a couple miles per hour. But on a Strava segment that goes uphill, the road bike beats it every time.

My observations, based on both types bikes on same courses during my training, is 1.5 MPH - 2.0 MPH on generally flat courses. It looks like yours was 1.1 MPH from estimate to actual. That is pretty close to my observed differences, especially if you factor course difficulty that might favor some road bike aspects.

For race like Quassy, I can see a road bike being... well maybe not faster but certainly not much worse. The Quassy Olympic course has so few flat sections of any extended length. On the Quassy half course there's a lot more of that.

And don't forget, you had some of the best cycling weather in the history of Quassy this year.

But for a more reasonable Olympic, I would never want to be without the TT bike.

This weekend I had a long, fast ride with a friend who was on his TT bike while I was on my road bike. We are usually pretty evenly matched around the low 300's FTP. On long flowing sections he was pulling away from me each time. I was doing a lot of drafting. On a long 2mile downhill at 40-45mph he pulled ahead by over 500m and had to wait for me at the next junction. I dropped him on a climb to get my own back but pure aero proved itself pretty conclusively.

Pretty much what I felt I could do on a hilly course. An unplanned porta-pottie break added a bit of time, though.

For 1 data point, on the lake placid course, I was 25 minutes faster on my tri bike vs road bike pushing a modest 160 watts. Both had Retul fits and used the same wheelset. Watts for the course both times were spot on 160 watts. On the road bike, I never left the drops except to drink and eat.
