Road bike position feedback - is my seat too high?
Looking for some ST feedback on the positioning of me on my road bike. My main concern is the height of my saddle. Does it look too high?

Way high! Look at your hips rocking side to side with each stroke. Power generation in that position would be abysmal. There are heaps of youtube vids on how to get a starting point on saddle position. Get that dialled, both height and position in relation to BB, then you can adjust your cockpit for comfort.

Right on, thanks for the feedback!

Any rough estimate as to how much I should lower the saddle as a starting point?

Appreciate the feedback and advice! I guess this is probably why I’m feeling some lower back/hip pain on my right side.

Start with a video like this and then test and adjust. Cam has a number of videos focusing on different aspects of the fit once you have the basic position at a good point.

With cleats on, your heel on the pedal should make your leg completely straight at the pedals farthest away point. You should be able to awkwardly pedal with your heels on the pedals.

That is what I have always used with great success

Thanks for sharing this. I gave it a watch and noted down a lot of things I can change.

What's funny is that my fit was done by a fitter at a highly reputable shop in New England and that video seemed more informative and helpful than the $$$ fit.

This was mentioned in the video Fletch shared as well. Sounds like a good starting point.

that's not the best video to judge from, but looks like your saddle is a touch high. As others have mentioned I also wondered about setback.

Thanks for taking a look!

I ended up lowering the saddle nearly 1 cm and moving it forward about 4 mm. I took another video as well. It feels a lot smoother that's for sure.

I use the heel way , just a regular sneaker, heels on pedals and should be straight . I also went with balance . You should be able to pedal and then just sit up no hands on the bars . Hands go straight back behind ur back and you should notice a increase in cadence.

For sure. I'll angle it down a little bit and see how it feels. I appreciate the help!

Didn't read other feedback. My 2 cents:
  1. Move saddle down 10-20mm
  2. Move saddle forward 10-20mm
  3. Bend elbows more if speed is important
  4. Longer stem by 10-30mm
  5. Turn hoods inwards if speed is important

Wow, thanks for the detailed feedback!

I've implemented some of those changes and will consider swapping stems as well. The stem I currently have on the bike is 100mm but I have a 110mm stem I can try.

Is increasing the stem length primarily to adjust reach and not acting in unison with the seat moving forward? Or are they exclusive of each other? Thanks!

Bring it another cm forward and drop the saddle about 5 mm.

I think this is about right (starting from the first video).

I made more of the suggested changes - moved the seat forward about 5mm, moved down about 5mm and put a 110mm stem on as well. I only moved the seat about 5mm forward because I'm beginning to run out of real estate on the rails and only have a few mm left to play with.

The pedal stroke feels SO much more smooth and the little bit of change to stem length feels good as well. This will be the last video I upload unless there is something glaringly wrong.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback and advice, it's helped a lot.

Sorry for the delayed response. Definitely get some rides in outside and let us know how it feels. Glad things are feeling better. That said, I do feel like there are other improvements available but you'll probably need an in-person fit with a good fitter to sort out the details.
