Replace Chain with Cassette?
Kind of a newbie question:

I'm planning on purchasing a new cassette for my Cervelo P2 and putting the old one on a rear tire that I plan to keep skewered on my indoor trainer. This will allow me to make the transition from trainer to riding outdoors little simpler.

Should I go ahead and purchase a new chain as well with the new cassette. Current cassette is shimano 105 11-25. I plan to put this cassette on my trainer wheel and replace it with ultegra 11-25.

Thanks for the assist!

I assume the old cassette isn't all shark finned? If it is, just chuck it and get 2 cassettes and a new chain (and probably new rings).

If the cassette is still good, check the chain with a chain checker tool. If it is out of spec, replace it. If not, keep it.

I usually change my cassette with every second chain. Back in the day you were taking a chance of ruining a new cassette with a worn (but not necessarily worn out) chain. Your chainrings should get a minimum of 20k miles.
