Recommend me an epic event/challenge in 2019
Quote | Reply
What kinds of (non-triathlon) challenges have you guys taken on that you're most proud of? I'm looking for a change of pace for next year. Something that's a real test of mettle/grit. Not super expensive, so climbing in the Himalayas is probably out. Badwater intrigues me. So does Sealfit Kokoro, but I'm positive I'd mess up my back training for that.

Whattaya got?

Edit: prefer to avoid cycling for long distances.

Hmm....if you are considering Badwater, some of these will be pretty tame, but you can add stuff to make it more epic...

· Hiking: 4-5 day trip climbing multiple14ers (multiple 14ers in same day) with cycling (road and/or MTB) mixed in

· Gravel bike:
Dirty Kanza
Michigan Coast to Coast

· Endurance Cycling:
Doing a 12 hour event,
Newest version of Furnace Creek 508,
Ride entire distance of Natchez Trace (there and back in 4 days (>850 miles),
Ride entire Blue Ridge Parkway one-way in 3-4 days,
Any of the multiple rides across a state in one day,
Do an Everest ride
Do a solo RAAM qualifier
Leadville (cycling or running)
Create your own epic ride

Grass Roots/Non-Traditional Triathlon (I know you said non-triathlon, but oh well):
· Sea to Summit,
SOS,
Island Extreme tri in Iceland

· Swimming:
5k or 10k open water swim races.
Go camping with a friend/spouse/significant other, bring a kayak and do the 5k/10k with a kayak escort.

· Organized Epic Rides:
Cherohala Challenge,
Six Gap Century,
Blood Sweat and Gears,
Triple Bypass

Tad

It took awhile, but I finally discovered that its not the destination that's important, but rather the journey.

World's Toughest Mudder :)

Ryan Atkins, the guy that won last year, finished the 24 hour obstacle course race with 110 miles.

Me and my brother did the 8 hour Toughest Mudder 2 years ago and had a lot of fun. Plan to go next summer if there is one nearby.

Max

I will be doing MI Coast 2 Coast again. 212 miles on gravel roads across the state.

A few others on my schedule are Land Run, Sancho 200, and HAMR. If you’ve never heard of HAMR there is a great YouTube video. It’s been described as “Berkeley for cyclists”.

Do something stupid hard with no registration fees or organization. Do it with a buddy and you'll have better stories and more fun.

Rim to Rim to Rim with my younger brother fit the bill perfectly when I was looking for something like this a few years ago.

Bikepacking also did it for me, but you seem adverse to lots of time in the saddle.

A stupid long backpacking trip somewhere outside my normal area is next on the list.

Both bikepacking and backpacking add an element of self reliance and getting away from the normal places that appeal to me.

Suffer Well.

Some things I’ve done in non tri years I’d recommend - climb Kilimanjaro with safari afterwards,, snowshoe mountains in French alps, trek to Machu Picchu, kayak in Belize. Adventure travel instead of a race is really fun and interesting to train for.

If you shop around, all those trips can be pretty close to what an Ironman vacation costs.

This is what I'll be doing. $70, plus two nights hotel, an 8 hour round trip drive.
50k run on exactly the opposite terrain of where I live, and it'll be cold for me.
It shouldn't be too hard to find an equivalent for you?

Average of 99 miles/day and over 10,000 ft of climbing per day.

I know you said no long rides, but 100 miles is less than Ironman...just that you do it for 10 days (5 days on, 1 day rest, 5 days on).

I actually had to cut day 3 short this year due to a saddle sore, but I did the other 9 days. Damn near killed me ;).

We should all experience the blissful agony of breaking an hour in the 40kTT.

That's a great suggestion. Epic views. Moderately challenging. Cheap. You'll remember it forever.

A few others to consider
Crusher in the Tushars - good views, long climbs, and it isn't a long distance event (but it is challenging)
Leadville - Somebody else mentioned this. At 100 miles, it's not super long (like DK), but the elevation makes it tough. You can train and ride it hard in order to get the gold buckle, or you can show up and just ride it at a moderate pace and enjoy the day.
DK200 - It's epic, but it's long. This was less enjoyable than leadville, Crusher, or R2R2R.

Regarding climbing in the Himalaya :

if you go for top of Everest, yes very very expensive.
But a trekking in Khumbu valley, Everest base camp, or elsewhere around (Annapurna, Daulaghiri, ...) you can do that for reasonably cheap by yourself, or a bit more expensive with some organization help.

Spend 2 or 3 weeks above 3000m, one week above 5000m is a great experience.
