Iā€™ve been using Magic5 (clear or blue) all winter, but yesterday, I remembered that I had a set of blue mirror swedix that were given to me. I really like those. Very comfortable and a great range of vision. I agree that with Swedish goggle, one can look out through the top of the goggles, but this is a bit easier on the eyes with the Swedix. I think this is a great tool for OWS as well. It doesnā€™t take much to adjust to the line across the lens in pool swimming.

Today:

8x100m on 2:30 WU (1:59.5.....1:47).
1500m "pleasant tempo" (26:54.5).
4x100m on 2:30 CD (1:55, 1:53, 1:53, 1:52).
Total: 2700m.

Gear:

-Speedo swim shorts that cover quads. (I forget the technical term.)
-A cheap-ass puke-green latex cap which advertises the Dodge City Off Road Tri - an event that I never did.
-old scratched Speedo blue swim goggles with no tech, which I'm re-using because my new ones hurt my face.
-Speedo ear gel thingies, which were white, but are now kind of grey.

M, 62.

I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k.)
I never did Triathlon. (Sue me.)

I have a question about the HeadCoach feature on Form goggles. The head position drills seem to ask most people to raise their heads up a bit and look more forward than down. If we want to swim eFISHiently, this approach seems counterproductive as I guess it would create more drag. I've heard this comment from other Form users (I'm one myself). Any thought on this?

I decided that genetics and dihydrotestosterone have won the fight. Iā€™m losing my hair, so I clipped it with no guard last night. //

You need to start upping your coffee intake, probably what has saved my head of hair all these chlorinated years... (-;

Did this one today after yesterdays 4 hour meet, will do a RR a bit later on that one and my 5 events back to back to back!! Was just thinking a long stretch out day, but times were good anyway, getting ready for some long ocean swims in June..

masters long course nats happened this week or last week and the talk at training this morning was the WR going in the W 60-64 800 free. 10,02.

A couple of other high lights for the mens - M 70- 74 and M 75-79 as 1132 and 12,02 and the 55-59 M wins a 9,50

400 free big highlight M65-69 4,48 and W 60-64 (4,54). Another WR I think for W 60-64. Podium needed a 5:28 for 60-64W which is a pretty fast podium for 4 free LC

Talked about her in earlier RRs, she cooks real mean and real hard. Legend.

Fascinating! I'm 62, with a full head of jet black hair. And I've been a coffee addict since 5. (I'm not kidding. In 1960s blue collar England coffee for kids was a thing.)

400 free big highlight M65-69 4,48 and W 60-64 (4,54). Another WR I think for W 60-64.

Always fun to see the guys in my AG killing it, but still 11 seconds off the world record, which may stand for decades(Rick Collela) and the women just missed the WR, looks like it is4;53+ by a Canadian who set it a couple years ago..Good stuff..

So here is my meet RR for Sunday, did the middle distance pentathlon, so 100 of each stroke and a 200IM. On paper these things all pencil out a certain way, but no way to know the fatigue of all out sprinting has on you, especially old men like me who do not clear lactate very well. But that is just a function of amount of yards you do and how hard you train, so not expected in my case...

First up was 100 fly, thought I would take it out easyish as have done no training for 4 laps. Well it showed, had 85 good yards at about 1;11 pace, and literally could not get my arms out of the water the last 10 yards and had to do 7 or 8 kicks to get to the wall.. Havent felt like that ever in a 100, but do remember many 200's where that was my finish strategy. So ended up with a 1;15 and a gallon of lactate as my door prize..

Next up was 100 back, lucky for me that not too many crossover muscles with fly and it felt ok. This is the stroke I have been working on the most this year as it has always been my worst, and hope to have it transfer to my IM's. Cannot do a start from the blocks, so just did a push off like in training, seems like I still come up with everyone my age anyway. Thought I could do a 1;20 maybe, something like a 39/41. But to my surprise I went my 39 and came home in the same exact time, for a 1;18+. Super happy my focus is paying off..

next up was 100 breast, which is a good stroke for me but now feeling a bit arm weary. Out in a 38+ and back in 42 for a 1;20. Disappointed with the time, as this is usually what I go out in a 200 in, but all things considered its ok..

Next up 100 free, which I have not swam in SCY in 40 years. The way I felt I was just hoping to break 1;04/05, but it came in at 1;02+ so very happy when I saw the clock. Feels like in a big tapered meet that I could actually maybe 58+ or something close..

So now completely flogged and about 5k worth of warm up, warm downs, and 4 all out races, I had the 200 IM to look forward to. I felt horrible, couldn't even do a lop of fly in the warm up for it without being gassed, so decide I would soft swim the first 100, catch a lot of air on the back, and just get through the dam thing. SO out in 36+ for the fly, then a super easy 46 for the back, 45 for the breast as I began to pick it up, and home in 34 for the free for a 2;43. On paper I thought I would be like a 2;34 or something, but like I said, you just dont know how hard it is going to be after swimming for 4 hours in and out and just emptying your arms each time.. I needed a 2;40 to break the all time record for my AG, so missed that but did win with a respectable total.

So the stats;
100fly 1;15
100back 1;18
100breast 1;20
100free 1;02
200IM 2;43

Really glad I did the 3 hour drive to do this thing, and good thing it was in San Diego and not USC or UCLA where the campus's have been closed due to the protests. Guess no one gives a shit about Palestine in SD... (-;

Big day of racing.. bet it felt good to hit the hay that night. Nice efforts! Funny your 100s were in IM order. That even split on the back is nice, did it feel like a build in effort the last 75?

thanks for RR, that is pretty damn good swimming..

I'm back at altitude after nearly 3 weeks at sea level, made the 200s a bit grueling.. HR hit upper 170s at the end of the set, a PR for this year ;-)
5x200, 2:55 and fading to over 3, 5x100IM where the fly was all survival stroke, 5x50
Only 2 more weeks until the outside pools open..

This set looks so harmless, but I just cannot do it, or don't understand it. It's meant to be 4x, I did 2x:

300 at a tight interval giving only 5-10 seconds rest 4:30
250 at same interval 4:30
100 on same base 1:30
75 on same interval 1:30

Yet is a long time :-). It's a really weird set, for me.

About the set: I think base/interval are the same. I would have called them sendoffs (this is from the favorite set thread). The 300/250 and 100/75 sendoffs are the same, making the 250 and 75 'easy' as I understand it. I'd have written like this back in the day:

300 on 4:30
250 on 4:30
100 on 1:30
75 on 1:30

Thanks Sam, it was a long tough day. But its what I choose to do, need those checks and balances once in awhile to motivate, and to scratch the competition itch..

Last couple of swims high pool here has only been 82, lots of winds have been cooling down the water faster than the heaters can heat it up. So thought today might be a good day for a TT after seeing how I felt in warm up, but alas the hot temp gods got control again, about 84 or so..

But put some pressure on my warm up just to see, felt great in the water, just got to hot to do anything too long and hard..
