I´M BROKE... CAN´T AFFORD RACING... WHAT NOW
Quote | Reply
Hey guys, I´m going through some tough times and can´t afford racing at the moment. I did my last Ironman on july 29th and was wondering how to aproach my training now that I don´t have any objectives in sight. I´m feeling kind of lost. Any suggestions?

I'd probably scale back on most things not involving my quality of life and do things that are within my means.

Volunteer!

Do you have the basic gear to compete?

Volunteer and ask the Race Director for a discounted entry. Race local sprint and Olympic.

I would work out a Sprint Triathlon distance route from my local pool, with a good 20k bike home, and a 5k run route from home.
Train as normal
Have 2 days recovery
Cycle to local pool for the warm up
Do a personal time trial on the course in race mindset
Record each leg, transition at pool in changing rooms, do not get to worried about speed of this transition as you will need to be considerate to other users.
Log time and any details, add up times with transitions taken out for a benchmark
Recovery day or two as you should have worked very hard
Back into normal training.

You can then work on your weakness and race again to measure progress.

Any local races that will give you a free entry if you volunteer.

Think of it as a 2 year plan for your next race? Can still work on getting fitter and faster.

There have been a lot of good suggestions in here.

I'd throw in: create your own personal event.

I've used epic training days as goals in the past. 300km bike ride. A point-to-point swim with someone following in a canoe. Lately I've been thinking about running the a local waterfront trail over the course of a couple of years (the section I'd run is from Kingston to Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 600 km in total but I would do it in shorter sections). It isn't the same challenge as racing, but it's better than spending an hour on the treadmill every day.

If you're like me, it will be hard to stay motivated without specific short and intermediate range targets to shoot for. So you need to come up with some. Maybe you can measure yourself against some training buddies. Pick a course and race them (stay safe -- try to avoid a course with intersections), rinse and repeat every month or so. Maybe you can race against yourself. Pick a course (for bike, maybe a 40k) and race it once a month (this one would not work for me -- its stupid, but I need something external to motivate me to train well). Anyway, figure out what makes you tick and then hack into it to develop a motivation to keep going.

Just run. Running is what it's all about anyway!

Do some focused run training. Running is cheap and races are much cheaper. Especially local races. Go for a new 5km/10km PR.

Start the Captain Canada training plan, probably have to do a threshold test first.

Train for life, not triathlon. If you're doing long courses, in any case you have to optimize between swim, bike, run, weights, sleep, work, commute, family, fun. Unless you're a pro, of course.

Consider this training block heavy on getting better income sources, lighter on racing.

This is the best answer.

You already have internet access, so there's no added expense.

But Strava KOM whoring is a good option too.

Or - how about you pretend you've signed up for X race in the future, and train like you're going to have to be ready to race it?

Find local clubs for each discipline and go to the group workouts.

For cycling, you can certainly "race" for free at lots of local group rides that are "race sim" rides. Running, do your own pace with a group weekly run out of a brewery.

Not sure on swimming. Either way, likelihood is someone will still show up who can smoke you.

Most of the "local" time trials I've done, almost always a couple triathletes show up and "brick" the TT ride with a run afterwards.

You don't have to race Ironman races to stay fit.

Why not do some trail running events that are very cheap or just spend your time doing a focus on one sport and race when finances allow?
