Help negotiate my Woodway purchase
Hey Slowtwitch,

I’ve decided to splurge on a Woodway 4FRONT. I know there are deals to be had on the secondary market, but am buying new for the sake of convenience.

Any tips for getting a good price from Woodway? They are quoting $10,850.

New is the way to go, and yes no wiggle room. I had a poor experience with my used one, and it was my wife who persuaded me to buy a new one.

Everything is negotiable.

Bring a big wad of cash and let the shop see it.

Tell them that you aren't paying sales tax and want a discount too. Shut your mouth and wait for them to talk.

You are paying $10K for a flipping treadmill!! They know you have lost your mind and will pay what it costs. Its like bargaining on a new Ferrari..good luck with that..

I don't pay the full retail price on anything.

I like how people try to bargain by saying they will pay cash...as opposed to what, coconuts?

People seem to still be operating in the 90s.

Paying with a credit card costs the merchant at least 2 percent. There would also be a record of the payment, so they would need to pay income tax on the profit. If the buyer pays with cash, the merchant can put it in their pocket and the merchandise could be classified as shrinkage (a loss).

Paying with a check does not cost the merchant anything, but the profit would still need to be declared on their tax return.

I am happy to buy something that has been lingering on the shelf for a year or if it is slightly used. And businesses get desperate to move inventory at certain times of the month or year. No reason to not take advantage.

Do you pay the sticker price on a car?

You don’t take credit cards for whatever you do in life.

Credit card processing is negotiable between processors but there are some generalities.

Swipe fee $0.20-0.35
Percentage of transaction between 2-5% depending on card type (Amex is almost 5%, most reward cards are 3-4%, only an unbranded card is in the 2 range, but how often do you see one of those).

It adds up to quite a bit every month as a retailer

Purely out of curiosity, what options did they quote you for that price? Or is that the basic model with no options?

Most shocking thing to me in this thread is people don’t understand paying cash and getting a discount

Works all sorts of places including autos and real estate

Are you buying direct?

You might be able to get a deal from an independent retailer.

Contact Travis at fitnessedgeonline.com, he use to be a woodway dealer, so maybe he can still get and drop ship you one.

Thanks for the insight. Is the price I noted consistent with your purchases?

Are you suggesting paying under the table so no sales tax is paid?

I like to simply hand the cash to the seller.

When doing so, do you say what you suggested - that you aren't paying sales tax?

I tell the seller that I am not paying sales tax.

The seller would need to pay the sales tax, or not. His choice if he wants to risk it.

Curious - what was the bad experience with your used Woodway? New is out of the question for me, but I've always thought about used in the future if the price was right.

In my case I think the transport company mishandled it. It is a beast of a machine but it seemed out of alignment and it made crazy sounds and ripped one belt. My guess - they dropped it
