Racing on a Diamondback Andean super bike
Quote | Reply
I fell in love with Diamondback’s Andean the first time I laid eyes on it in September 2016, when it was unveiled. I immediately jumped into research mode and looked for any info I could find about this bike. This is where Slowtwich truly shined and I found a few pics of it and some commentary from Jordan Rapp. Just over a year later I finally got one and have been racing on it since. There are so many questions people ask me about the bike and I wish I had those answers too when looking for it, so I decided to write up my thoughts on the bike and what it is like to race on it and share them. Would love to hear back from you!

Looks sharp, and I love the pics you took and the attention to detail

Thank you Herbert, much appreciated! I really love that bike and wanted to capture it's beauty in pictures and a bit of storytelling.

Nice position: ears over elbows, knees overlapping upper arm, helmet not higher than highest point of back, forearms ever-so-slightly above level, saddle not (obviously) too high. John Cobb would (likely) approve.

Thanks Andrew! Those are really good tips to keep in mind for the proper bike position. Ironically, the original photo was taken right at the start of the race when I haven't fully settled into a position. So I wanted to share another photo at mile 21 of the bike, where I felt more settled in. How's that?

Oh my God so much attention to detail. Great write-up. Do you have any estimates of time saved in Olympic & 70.3 courses versus your old setup?

Awesome. I'm on a P5 now but that is my next bike for sure-I immediately took to it visually like you did. Thanks for sharing.

First pic actually shows more, but based on the second, it appears that your elbows might be wider than your knees?

If so, you might benefit from bringing them closer together (if possible).

(I'm also looking at your broad-ish shoulders and picturing the air streaming off the points they form, but can't recall John's rule-of-thumb about that.)

I recently purchased the Canyon CF SLX and love it. I had no desire to look at the Andean.
Having said that, what a great review! Great pics and details. I read all the nice things that Rapp and Slowman wrote and was unimpressed, now i am.
Great job!

That is an excellent question @Baldy! How much time did it save over the old setup? I had to dig up the results from the same race to compare - California International Triathlon on my old and new bike. This isn't a scientific answer, but is as close as I could get it in real life test. Here are the links for all of the Strava data on both races: 2016 CIT Bike Felt DA and 2018 CIT Bike Diamondback Andean

I was pretty meh about it myself until i had the chance to ride one that a teammate of mine bought. It's a pretty sweet bike in person. Not that i can afford a new one anytime soon

2016 Run 42:42 (6.02 miles at 7:05/mi) at 166bpm ave HR
2018 Run 42:38 (6.01 miles at 7:05/mi) at 175bpm ave HR

I haven't been running as much or as fast as I did 2 years prior, so my heart rate was higher. However, I can't really blame it on the bike, just need to run more.

Thanks. There are other factors of course, but with the 2 bike splits being within seconds of each other, yet the DB made you work less hard, your run was faster even with less run fitness...and one could say that is due to working less hard on the bike so you were setup better for the run. That may be a bit oversimplified but that is what I see here. Thanks again.

To me he worked the same but produced lower power. BP is almost the same.

@yrebetta I haven't really dedicated a photoshoot to capturing a proper 70.3 setup, but at least I can share one from the race at HITS Napa 70.3. Two water bottles by (TriRig) and two storage boxes (comes with the bike).

I have to confess that I did a poor job of setting up the photoshoot. The gearing was in the worst possible combo (two biggest rings), which stretched out the derailleur to the max and the crankset not aligned with the chainstays, finally the wheel alignment was simply unacceptable ;)

I promise to do another photoshoot of the 70.3 setup soon that would relinquish those terrible sins.

Just curious how you got one? I was looking a while back and the diamondback site was out of stock or unavailable?

thanks!

That is pure bike porn. Looks like a motorcycle.

Why no bta? Would be better to have one bottle on the bars and one behind the seat than to have two behind the seat

Agreed. All those expensive aero gains go out the window every time you sit up to get a drink.
